Raid Fly and Wasp Killer
Advantages: Kills Flies and Wasps quickly
Disadvantages: Does not smell good, product should be used carefully.
While I have been very happy to enjoy the wonderful warm and sunny spring weather I have been having over the last couple of days I have been less pleased with the various flies and wasps which have been infiltrating my open windows. As such, I decided it was time to get my can of Raid Fly & Wasp killer out from under the sink. While I prefer to manually usher flies out if possible, I am more wary to try this with wasps for fear of unduly antagonising the insects and do not want to clear up the sticky mess left from the alternative newspaper method of dispatching with annoying flying animals.
The product comes in a tall blue aerosol can with the yellow Raid logo on the front and a picture showing a lightning bolt dispatching with a couple of insects. It claims to kill flying insects in seconds and is suitable for use on a variety of such insects including flies, wasps and mosquitoes. To use the product you are advised to spray in short bursts into the air in the vicinity of the insects, keeping at least 1 metre away from all surfaces and walls. To spray you simply depress the smooth big button on the top of the can and the aerosol is released from the hole in the front of the cap. The button itself is slightly lower than the top of the cap which helps to prevent accidental spraying.
I find that the product is very swift and effective in killing the pesky, annoying insects buzzing around the room (and inevitably always aiming for the closed portions of the windows) and usually find that they have dropped to the floor/windowsill well within a minute of spraying the product, although often find that they continue to buzz for a couple of minutes after this so often at this stage I scoop them up with some paper and throw them outside. The can claims that the product has "a pleasant outdoor fresh scent". I would definitely not agree with this, I find the fragrance to be chemically and unpleasant and usually like to leave the room for 5 minutes following use of the product to allow the scent to dissipate.
The can provides a variety of warnings concerning use of the product. While it is said to be suitable for use in a kitchen environment, you should "not contaminate foodstuffs, eating utensils or food contact surfaces" and only spray inside in the air. The product is extremely dangerous to fish and other aquatic life, so fish tanks and bowls should be removed or covered prior to use. The product is also extremely flammable and contact with skin and eyes should be avoided. Furthermore you should only use the product in well ventilated areas and not breath in the spray significantly.
The product is currently available for £2.20 at Sainsburys which I think is good value. I originally purchased the product a couple of years ago from Sainsbury's and the product has easily lasted me through a couple of summers and still feels quite full, so lasts a very long time.
Thank you for reading, review may also be found on Ciao.
Summary: An effective fly spray but don't believe the claims about the pleasant scent!
