Raid Fly and Wasp Killer
Advantages: Kills flies well
Disadvantages: Smell is potent
We have recently done quite extensive work on our home and have knocked a wall down to make the kitchen and conservatory one large room. As it gets quite hot in the summer, we leave the conservatory door open and the only real problem we have found with doing this is the amount of flies we have circulating around the conservatory as I presume they can smell the food cooking now it is all one big room.
We decided to get some fly spray to try and combat the problem. I hadn't a particular brand in mind when purchasing and went for the Raid Fly and Wasp killer. There was no particular reason I went for this one, it just happened to be the one that stood out on the shelves when I was out shopping.
The spray comes in a metal canister similar to that of a hairspray. The canister size is 300ml and the can is quite generally a blue colour with yellow writing across it. If you are looking for this one specifically, then it is easily recognisable and stands out on the shelves well.
The instructions of use are quite simple. You press the top down which releases the spray and you direct it at the flies. Although the can states that this stuff is perfectly safe to use in all areas of the home including the kitchen, I would obviously make sure any foods/drinks are completely covered so you don't get the spray (or the dead flies), on them.
My partner was the first in our house to use it, and I have to admit he did go a little overboard. We ended up having to open windows and doors to stop us being gassed out as the smell was really potent and quite choking. Even though we used too much, I think this would still be the case if you used a regular and sufficient amount. The smell got right down my throat so I would recommend having a couple of windows open if possible in the room you are using it in.
My partner sprayed this stuff directly at the congregation of flies in our conservatory and it didn't take long for them one by one to start dropping to the floor. It almost seems a little cruel but I don't know of any humane way of getting them to stay out of my home and they are real pests. It did take a few sprays directly at the flies in order for this stuff to work, but the main thing is that it did work. All that was left to do then was get rid of the dead flies which were now lay across my floor!
We purchased this can from Morrisons for the price of £3.50 which did seem a tad expensive to me at the time. I still think it is a little overpriced as you do need quite a lot of spray to get rid of the flies but having said that at least it does the intended job and my house was fly free so in that sense it is worth its money.
The spray is dispatched as quite a fine mist so it does cover quite a decent area in one go so do you don't have to do each fly one by one. After the first couple of sprays, you see them start to go a little mad, before they start to slow down then drop.
Overall, although I think this is a little overpriced for a 300ml canister of spray, I do still recommend it as it did do a good job. Whether the smell lingers after use I don't know, but not only did it get rid of the flies that were there, I found that our house stayed fly free for quite a while. I certainly didn't notice the smell lingering personally and after a couple of minutes the potent smell that had almost choked me seemed to have dispersed.
This spray is readily available on the shelves at most supermarkets and I would certainly recommend it if you suffer from pesky flies during the summer months as we have done this year.
Summary: A good way of getting rid of flies
