Advantages: Cheap, works quite well.
Disadvantages: Not good on tough stains.
I recently used Sainsbury's Basics Sponge Scourers when my Mum bought them along with our weekly shop. She usually prefers to buy cleaning products and cloths/ sponges at Wilkinsons as it's so much cheaper than the supermarkets but as we had no sponge scourers left and she didn't want to spend too much she decided to pick up a packet from the basics range.
Price and Packaging
A pack of five Sainsbury's Basics Sponge Scourers will only set you back 15p, I think everyone will agree it's a very good price. The packaging is very simple, but perfectly fine, it's just a plastic wrapper with the Sainsbury's Basics logo on, I don't really care what the packaging is like though as the price really is impressive.
The Product
Each sponge scourer consists of two elements, obviously, the sponge and the scourer. The yellow sponge is a decent depth probably just less than two inches with a thin layer of the green scourer to top it off. I'd say that the sponges are probably about four inches by two inches which for everyday plate washing is good; however a bigger scourer is probably more appropriate for tough jobs like grill trays or the oven.
My Experience
I have used these scourers for a couple of weeks now and I've been quite impressed with how they have worked. Straight out of the packet the sponge is soft and bouncy whilst the scourer is very firm and rough. I do find that over time the scourer side does get a bit flimsy and smooths off this usually take three or four days of average use though, which for 3p a sponge is pretty good going. The sponge has always stayed good for me, and after the green side has worn a bit I still tend to use the sponge for cleaning worktops and the sink.
I have mostly used the scourers to wash the dishes, mainly just crockery and the scourers manage to get everything off the plate without much difficulty. However, I've found that with more stubborn washing up, these basics scourers find it difficult to cope. On the whole though, the sponges work very well and I tend to use a washing up brush for those hard to get off stains.
Overall
I have been impressed with my experience of using Sainsbury's Basics Sponge Scourers. They aren't the best in the world and they do wear out fairly quickly but they are incredible value and for me this is the main strength of the product. I find a 15p pack lasts about two weeks in our house, we've paid a lot more in the past but won't be doing so again in the future.
Summary: 4/5 a good product, not the best, but very cheap!
