Advantages: Struggling to find any
Disadvantages: Not good value for money
How many of us try to economise by buying cheaper toilet tissue?
I can`t begin to think how many times I have been lured into that trap. The budget is running a little tight that particular week and the supermarket own brand just stands and looks at me from the shelves...I fall for it every time.
Sainsbury`s Basic range offers twelve toilet rolls presented very economically in a clear plastic covering at the knock down price of £1.25.
Sainsbury`s describe them as having an everyday design and they are for everyday use.
Each roll is two ply and has 200 sheets.
So the standard roll of toilet tissue is two ply anyway but many of them have more than two hundred sheets per roll.
The words `cheap` and `toilet roll` are like putting `oil` and `water` together, they just do not go!
Sainsbury`s basic toilet roll carries the Forest Stewardship Council label, so the paper is sourced in a responsible way, so every time you buy this product you are helping to care for the Rain Forests, a marvellous idea.
As I get ready to inspect a roll further I do notice that they look suspiciously shorter than other brands, so off I go to find my last roll of Andrex to do a comparison. The roll is shorter and where as the Andrex is tightly packed the Sainsburys Basic roll feels loose which indicates that there is far less paper on the roll.
But comparing these to Andrex is not fair really, a bit like comparing caviar to bloater paste.
Two ply tissue varies dramatically, some can be two ply but be ultra thick and absorbent...Sainsbury`s Basics?...Ermmm On the thin side and one wipe and it would be all over I would imagine.
By this time I am feeling a bit hyper-critical, I mean what do I want for £1.25?
The word spoilt comes to mind, I can get 4 rolls of Andrex for £1.59 at my local Jack Fulton`s, but sadly I needed to restock when they were shut.
After a few sighs of despair I decide to put a Basic toilet roll in the bathroom and just see how it goes, no visitors expected so no extra usage, a good time to have a test run.
The Sainsbury`s Basic toilet roll went on the holder just after lunch and sadly my hunch was right. Hubby (who usually contemplates his navel while he sits on the loo) wanted to know where `That stuff` had come from, i`m sure he thought that I had raided the public toilets!
As he had tried to unravel enough to meet his requirements he had wiped out a third of the roll!
So if we carried on at this rate we alone would be sustaining half of the Rain Forest.
A couple of leisurely trots later I sat beside an empty cardboard roll, so I reluctantly slotted my last Andrex onto the toilet roll holder and called it a day.
The Sainsbury`s Basic toilet rolls are in the bottom of the airing cupboard, put there for a rainy day.
Sorry about this Sainsbury`s but you Basic toilet rolls are a bit too basic.
A bit of a rock bottom product I reckon, but I blame no one but myself.
Summary: Maybe only buy these if desperation kicks in!
