Advantages: The laundry smells good and feels soft
Disadvantages: They could prove an unnecessary expense
As the colder months of the year approach it is harder and harder to get the washing dry, if I put the newly washed clothes on a clothes horse they take forever to dry and drying towels is a nightmare.
Sometimes I revert to using the radiators but if the radiators are covered with wet washing then it blocks the heat out, a bit of a no win situation really.
Inevitably I end up using the tumble dryer, agreed it does add an element of dread to the electric bill coming through the letterbox but at least it deals with the wet washing effectively.
When tumble dryer sheets first came onto the market I was as keen as anyone to try them out and the first packet that I ever tried were the Bounce sheets. Bounce tumble dryer sheets have that fresh as a daisy smell to them but they are twice the price of supermarket own brands, so sadly the Bounce sheets were sidelined in favour of a cheaper brand. I know that cheaper is often a poor substitute but like many I have to watch the pennies.
The idea behind the tumble dryer sheet has been well thought out. Place a lightly scented sheet into the tumble dryer along with your laundry and as it dries the sheet not only adds freshness to your laundry but makes the clothes easier to iron afterwards and cuts down on the amount of static electricity that builds up.
Sainsbury`s Linen fresh tumble dryer sheets cost £1.75 for 40, that works out a 4p a sheet. There are just two of us to wash for so they can`t be deemed as an expensive luxury but if you have a family they may well work out expensive.
Sainsbury`s Blue Linen Fresh tumble dryer sheets come in a small cardboard carton, true to form the box is in a shade of ocean blue.
On the front of the box Sainsbury`s have put a picture of a most angelic blond haired boy with a towel draped around his head. I`m sure that all Mum`s have their little angels draping freshly tumble dried towels around their heads! But anyway...the thought was there!
Take a sheet from the box, one thing you notice straight away is the reluctance to part with just one sheet at a time! at first I was trying to pull out just one sheet and ending up with a handful, but patience is the key.
The Linen fresh sheet feels soft, moist and smells good, a hint of citrus there. Stick the sheet into the dryer with your laundry and just leave it in there.
When the cycle has finished and you remove the dry washing the static build up is dramatically reduced and the laundry feels soft and smells lovely.
Now Sainsbury`s claim that if you use these sheets your ironing is simplified.
I have always found that tumble drying eliminates the need for a lot of ironing anyway, much of the laundry can just be folded and put away.
So I would still say that these tumble dryer sheets are a luxury really.
Yes, the laundry smells beautiful and it is soft as down which is all due to using the Linen Fresh sheets, but if you had a lot of washing to do they would be an unnecessary drain on the household budget.
Summary: Laundry that smells fresh as a daisy

- 01/02/09 I think it's the tumble dryer that's the luxury rather than the sheets. |
