      Very helpful

Another surprisingly great sweet candle that doesn't annoy but relaxes.

After receiving a leaving gift in the form of a scented candle from Scottish candle company Shearer's recently, I was more than delighted to find that another leaving gift just happens to be another candle from the same company I've not seen before. Dressed in a travel tin that looks more like those tins of travel sweets, Shearer's Kiwi & Lime Mousse candle comes from a range of sweet recipe inspired range called "Delice Aroma." The candle is coloured in a light lime green colouring, hand poured as usual with Shearer's quality (they have been going since 1897 seen clearly in their white lettering on green branding) and the recipe from today's sweet kitchen is sweet Kiwi and Lime in a green labelled silver tin complete with pull off lid.

When Yankee Candle first came to the UK they had similarly scented tins and garden buckets with Citronella and Lime additives that were well priced and good value based on their long burning time. Their travel tins were less pricey, had a lower amount of burning time but I loved them until YC took them out of production. Shearer's version here has a burning time of 25 hours and is priced at £5 on average (their website lists the product at £4-76 and a VAT charge of 74p). If Shearer's keeps these in production I may well consider this range again as they make other scents in the same Delice Aroma family such as Tropical Fruit Smoothie, Strawberry Milkshake and a Banoffee Pie one! Citrus content such as Lime combined with Kiwi isn't a scent that I'm aware of however, so I was quite intrigued how Shearer's would manage to pull it off.

Well the good news is that Shearer's have come up trumps again! This isn't as limey or lemony as I thought it would be and the Kiwi scent is sweet and warming to the nose with no paraffin after tones; a fact that can be inhaled once the tin lid has popped off. Once again I don't know how Shearer's do it but within half an hour, the scent that comes out of this candle is warm, rich and inviting; just like previous Shearer's scented candles I have had from this company. Surprisingly a scent that comes up quite readily is that of Watermelon, but it may well be Kiwi as it becomes chalky and ever so slightly flowery and is reminiscent of many a Body Shop body cream or lip salve product tinged with the same fruit.

When the candle burns for longer, it pervades into other rooms of the house although it isn't as strong as Yankee Candle medium jars that can stink out a home. Lime is present but it hovers rather than fills the air with full on potency, leaving the Kiwi to do that job with possible inducing belly hunger-grumbles if you haven't had your last meal! Secondly, I have had no unpleasant after effects with this scent, not feeling headaches appearing or ever feeling over sickly with the combined additives burning away - that's an immediate but pleasant surprise against most Yankee Candle sweet scents I've had to give away.

I don't normally look at candles when they burn unless I check them for uniform and balanced burning with no wastage but after four hours or so when I looked into the tin, the wax liquid is clear at the top with the lime green wax underneath that has split bits, almost as if Shearer's have purposefully put granules of scented oils to match the look of a sliced Kiwi. Perhaps it's the candle's normal look but against the white Watermelon Spa candle in its lit glass, this candle, when lit seems to match the look of a sliced Kiwi!

Where positioning is concerned, the tin itself is surprisingly heat proof on the base whilst the lid can be pushed onto the base, I wouldn't suggest doing this, as the tinned wax will burn equally with no wastage. The sides of the tin remain warm but they don't become hot; a problem that the previous Yankee Candle scented tins had. Although the wick is lead free, it is similar to the Candelite "Cotton-Fresh," candle I found at BN, as it will bunch up into a ball at the top, which can be pulled off once the candle has been extinguished and left to cool. If the wick isn't maintained, then the candle can be difficult to light up.

One aspect that is evident about Shearer's is that as a company, they are still relatively unknown on the market. If you can't find a private shop near you who sells Shearer candles, you can buy them online from the company itself and they use World Pay as an online bank, or if you are happening to visit Glasgow, pay them a visit at their main store!

Where strength is concerned, this is a very strong candle and only needs two hours per day to pervade all through the house. It burns evenly with little wastage and it is a lovely scented candle that should be considered if you like Yankee Candle's "Honeydew Melon," (the green one) as opposed to the strawberry tinted red coloured "Sweet Melon," type but don't want heavy aromas to overtake you. Although not claimed to shift odours, I find Shearer's Kiwi & Lime candle to be effective combating general light odours in the kitchen and masking cigarette smoke. Although it isn't a candle that covets both household areas, it covers the reason pretty well to justify lighting it; naturally I can't wait to visit Shearer's main store in Glasgow, as it will definitely be one product I'll buy again.
