Advantages: easy to use
Disadvantages: none
I opened the drawers in the old, old house and discovered some dull tarnished lifeless cutlery. I remember the days over 30 years ago when the spoons in this draw shone and I could see my reflection, I remember well 40 years ago when the light caught the blade of the knife and the gleam dazzling my eyes. What had happened to the luster on the forks? All the prongs, blades, and bowl's were dim. This silver cutlery was part of my heritage, christening spoons of long dead great aunts and uncles, wedding presents for my parents. This cutlery was the "best" cutlery only used for special occasions. The elderly gent and his wife had not used them for many years; the silver was discarded for the new brash stainless steel.
When I delved into one of the cupboards fill of cleaning chemicals I came across some Silvo Duraglit wadding in its container The name Silvo emblazoned across the tin and rays of gold and silver radiating around the tin from it. I remembered this wadding well and the tins of Silvo liquid. When I was a young thing in my early teens and younger we rarely used Silvo Duraglit wadding, the mistress of the housed preferring the Silvo cream cleaner, I think it was possibly cheaper.
Once a year I would traipse around the village in my uniform knocking on doors, shilling for the willing, (Girl guides equivalent to bob a job) I would say with a smile. Hello Mary they would say your mum told me you would probably be calling. A job I would frequently be given at the manor house was to clean their silver. I got this job at other houses too but at the Manor house I was given Silvo duraglit wadding not the Silvo liquid , I was pleased about that as Silvo liquid makes such a mess..
I would sit at the table in the kitchen with a pinny on and on the table were some silver goblets and cups, some silver spoons too. I opened the can of silver wadding and took out a small piece. I would then rub the goblet all over with the piece of wadding. I would put more pressure into my ribbing over the tarnished areas. The wadding would leave a grey/brown like smear where I rubbed. While I rubbed the silver with the wadding I could smell it, it was like mild ammonia.
When the item completely rubbed all over with the wadding I would get a clean dry duster and polish the residue of the items. The goblets and cutlery would begin to shine, a bit more buffing and they would gleam. When finished rubbing cleaning the silver I would replace the small piece of wadding as it would do for cleaning more silver. The Silvo wadding wipes away tarnishes. Silvo Duraglit wadding is a good product to use it does no scratch the valued silver items. When finished my task I would need to wash my hands as there was a little grey residue left on them.
I would then seek the lady of the house and tell her my task was done. The lady was delighted with my efforts the silver cutlery and goblets shining brightly now all ready to impress the guests at the next grand dinner.
I would then be rewarded with a few coins and I would go on my way to the next house. If the task was going to be cleaning silver I hoped they had got Silvo duraglit wadding to use not the liquid.
I have used this cleaner recently and it does work as wellas I remembered a good metal cleaner and polisher .

- 09/06/08 Lovely review Mary, because it is so personal as well as helping people choose a product. We didn't have much silver back then, we were far too poor, but I do remember polishing a set of Apostle Spoons. Spit & polish I think it was.
