Advantages: Cheap, ok absorbency and softness wise

Disadvantages: Not the best

I am always trying to save pennies where possible and have often tried different value ranges of toilet rolls. I do most of my shopping in Tescos, but having tried their own value range of toilet paper, I have to say that this was one value product too far. However, I noticed a while ago that they have a new Discount Brands range in Tescos which is still a cheap brand, but not quite as cheap and cheerful as the Tesco Value range so I thought I would try their toilet paper to see if it was any better than the Value range one.

These toilet rolls are available in packs of 4 or 9, but I went for the four purely because if it wasn't any good, then I hadn't wasted much money. The packs are priced at £1.50 & £2.40 respectively so are good value for money if the product is good. I will admit that I didn't hold out much hope for these but I was hoping for a better quality paper than the Value one.

As with the Value ones, the rolls and sheets of paper are noticeably smaller than better branded rolls such as Andrex, but then you tend to expect that from cheaper branded toilet rolls. These again felt quite thin as with the Value ones, but I will admit that they didn't feel quite as harsh to the touch.

The Value ones had reminded me a little of the vile paper (if that's what you can call it!), that we used to have at school around 20 years ago. This Discount Brands one didn't feel quite so bad, but there was again a noticeable difference between these and Andrex which I tend to purchase when they are on offer.

These weren't harsh at all, but then they weren't particularly soft either but you certainly didn't notice the lack of softness as I did with the Value ones and I wouldn't say it was a problem at all really. If you expect and require real comfort and softness from a toilet roll, then you really do have to pay more for your rolls than you do for this one as for the price you pay for these, you really can't expect luxury.

Absorbency wise, again these were ok but nothing special. They didn't fall apart upon impact of liquid as my Tesco ones did, but if you use these for any kind of spillage then you will find that you have to use quite a lot in order to mop up a spillage.

The only other thing that I use toilet roll for is when I have got a cold. This is when you could really do with a soft tissue so you don't end up with the Rudolph look, but unfortunately, this toilet roll wasn't really made for sensitive noses and I would definitely recommend purchasing a set of tissues specifically designed for noses if you don't want to end up looking a hideous mess as although they did the job required, they weren't much use with a cold as they just left the end of my nose dry and red which believe me isn't a good look.
Overall, I would call these no better than 'middle of the range'. They were noticeably better than my previous Tesco Value ones, but then that wouldn't be difficult, but on the other hand, they were also noticeably worse than Andrex or Velvet ones which I have also tried in the past. You really do pay for what you get when it comes to toilet rolls and that is certainly the case with these. If you are on a tight budget, then I would definitely recommend these over the Value range of toilet rolls, but if you can afford those few extra pennies, then I would recommend waiting until you get a decent brand on offer and stocking up as the quality difference really is quite noticeable. All i all, this is another ok, but not great product.

Summary: An ok cheap branded toilet tissue
