Living in a bright and airy flat near the seaside I am prone to getting late night visitors. No, no one exciting and I don't have a secret life going on I'm about to tell you about...we're talking unwelcome visitors such as midges, mossies and bloody moths. They love my home and I hate them. When I splat em with summat they make a mess and all I want is to stop them visiting so I can go back to the days before I was a killer.
Both me and my flatmate are frustrated. We've searched on the net high and low about how to stop the moths in-particular from getting in but basically, there isn't one apart from to keep windows closed all the time.
My flatmate went into a shop, here in Weston Super Mare and they sold all incense sticks and cones and things like that and she asked the lady if she knew of a remedy for it all.
The lady said insects, bugs and flying things seem to dislike Citronella. To try burning some in the home and it may keep them out, so my flatmate bought a couple of boxes of these for about 99p a box.
The cones come in a simple white box with pictures of leaves on it and I am told that they are Stamford Citronella 15 Incense Cones ' This incense contains citronella oil which is a very effective mosquito repellent. The Stamford Citronella fragrance has a fresh and dewy aroma'. Other information listed on the box includes directions for using them, warnings are given and contact details for the manufacturer are given. Inside the cones come in a white plastic bag and you simple open the box from the top to get one out.
Jade green in colour and of course they are small coned shaped. To use one you can either use the silver spiral holder which is included in the box and light the tip or put it on another heat resistant type of object and then after a couple of seconds blow it out and let it smolder till you get ashes.
Handling them is tricky the green powder comes off the cone and believe me...I can only say this...these absolutely stink! Even just stored in the box they come in you can smell them if you go anywhere near them so when being handled I actually gag!
It doesn't get better when you light them either. You do get a strong and slightly zesty smell of Citronella but it really is gross along with a sort of powdery talcum powder aroma given off and a burning smell. These burn in about 10 minutes or less but the smell is intoxicated and overwhelming and the last time I burnt one I threw up to be honest. It really sticks in the back of your throat, the smell of these.
Does It Eradicate Bugs?:
In short no, not at all. My flatmate in-particular still gets bitten at night and bugs of all kinds still come in. However this really does see to subdue them all and I have noticed less activity. Moths just stay very still and stuff. However me and anyone else in the flat also feels subdued with burning these.
The effects of them being burnt are apparent only when they are burning and then as soon as the smell disappears (which does take ages) then bug activity returns to normal though we all still feel rather sick.
They work in sorts though we can't stand them. I wouldn't and can't say the aroma particularly makes the home smell fresh and me, I will never burn off another one again...I'd rather makes the bugs a cuppa and learn to be more tolerant!
Available on Amazon for 92p but do keep your eyes open in pound type shops etc.
