Advantages: They do the job

Disadvantages: Too small

Are you ready for a thrilling review on a TFT screen cleaner? And not just any old TFT screen cleaner, what we have here is a pot of no less than one hundred TFT and LCD Screen cleaning tissues. Excited? I hope you are, because believe it or not this is exciting stuff. Having parted with well over three hundred pounds for a brand new Philips TFT monitor a couple of months ago I proceeded to make the screen smeary with the use of a common can of furniture polish, well it works on the TV why wouldn’t it work on the monitor? Well, it didn’t work, no matter how hard I polished and rubbed the smears would not disperse, Argh, it was like looking through a curtain!

Luckily, in the recesses of my mind I remember seeing a little display of TFT monitor accessories in PC World when I was buying the monitor, and I distinctly remember some sort of wipe - rub product with the sole purpose of keeping the screen clean. Not willing to look at a smeary screen a moment longer I made hast to my local PC World with the express aim of procuring some of the aforementioned cleaner. Sure enough, a neat little stack of a product called Storex™ TFT & LCD Screen Cleaning Tissues (henceforth in this review to be known as Screen Tissues) was displayed alongside the TFT monitors so I grabbed a tub and paid the £4.99 necessary to purchase them.

Storex™ was not a company I had heard of before but a quick look at their web-site informed me that they offer a comprehensive range of computing accessories. They are best known for storage solutions but have recently moved into computer maintenance and cleaning products which of course is how I came to know of them.

The screen tissues are packaged in a soft drink sized container fashioned from finest plastic, they are also in a plastic bag inside the container to prevent them from drying out. A small tab is lifted at the top and the tissues are fed out one by one. The plastic tub is decorated very sparsely with the majority of the room taken up with black writing on a white background. Some of this writing declares that the screen tissues are free from damaging agents such as alcohol, butylglycol and methanol, and that the tissues have antistatic characteristics as well as being environmentally friendly and non-flammable. Quite an impressive list I’m sure you’ll agree.

Pulling the first screen tissue from the tub I was a little disappointed at the size, I was expecting it to be tissue sized but the slightly moist tissue I released was slightly smaller than a five pound note. A quick sniff of the tissue revealed an interesting scent the like of which I have never smelt before, sort of a cross between grass and gin, and not especially pleasant. No matter, I rubbed it energetically on my monitor screen expecting an instant improvement, but did not get one. The screen tissue left some sort of damp residue on the screen and the small part that I had used it on did look slightly cleaner but the tissue simply was not big enough for the task for which it had been designed. Undeterred by this set back I simply yanked half a dozen of the screen tissues from there receptacle and bunched them together to form one monster sized screen tissue, and this time I had much more success in my cleansing endeavours. The monitor screen was completely covered in that aforementioned damp residue and most of the smears disappeared, it took about a minute for the cleaning fluid from the screen tissues to evaporate and when it did I was left with quite a clean monitor screen. It was not a perfect or crystal clear effect but was much improved on the effect my efforts with normal cleaner had left.

On the whole I recommend Storex™ TFT and LCD screen cleaning tissues, and give them three stars out of five. They loose marks in my eyes because they are not big enough for the task, rather than selling one hundred tissues that are too small I feel Storex™ should resize the tissues and sell ten of a better size. That said, they do the job if you use enough of them and they have ensured my new TFT monitor no longer has a smudgy screen, and I really cannot ask for any more than that.

The tissues are made in Germany and you can visit the manufacturers’ website at: -

Good review. I think I need some of these. At the moment I'm using a damp cloth.
