“ Brand: Surf / Type: Liquid Laundry Detergent / Category: Laundry „
When it comes to my washing detergents/ fabric softeners I am quite loose on my morals and will be swayed by it's promises of soft clothes or even the appearance of the bottle - yes I'm that shallow! The main thing for me though is that products fall into my budget range and although I've admired the likes of Surf's 'Twilight Sensations Small & Mighty' range for quite a while now I found the usually high price tag very off putting. On a recent trip to my local Poundstretcher which is located less than 10 minutes from my home (and next to Superdrug how convenient!) I popped in for a few basic household cleaning items and spotted the Twilight Sensations range at under £2. Having been in Superdrug a few days previously and seen the same item at £3.29 I deemed this incredibly cheap and bagged myself two different fragrances and this review focuses on the 'Vanilla & Black Orchid'. This is one of Surf's 'premium' offerings and the bottle I picked up is an impressive 875 ml in size. It's a large rounded bottle at the base which has a slight curvature on one side before streamlining in towards the neck where the lid fits neatly on top. As ever the lid doubles as a measure cup and has a small line which indicates how much is needed per wash. The bottle itself is really quite attractive and is in a bold black colour with almost golden coloured vanilla pods and orchids which are highlighted in a bold and bright manner. All in all it was the sexy sleek appearance of the bottle that grabbed my attention before the price tag! The liquid inside is of a reasonable consistency and is on a par with similar products; it's neither thick nor thin but is runny enough to pour comfortably from the bottle without it 'blobbing' out and spilling. The colour is a delicate cream and the fragrance is just beautiful; the orchid and vanilla are both apparent and compliment each other well without being too overpowering. Although I like these type of products to have a decent level of strength, I'm not keen on ones that are so overpowering that they detract from a perfume I may be wearing. This I'm pleased to say seemed to offer the right balance. The Bio Liquid is poured into the drawer compartment as per usual and after loading up my washing machine I gave it a go.. I found my washing had the beautiful aroma ingrained in as soon as I removed it from the maching and after drying it for the majority on my washing line outside I brought it in when it got dark and aired on my dryer. Because the heating was on at this point the vanilla and black orchid scent wafted throughout my home which was lovely and the scent hadn't faded since hanging the washing out several hours before so I was very impressed with that aspect. Though it states 1 cap (35 ml) equates to one full load I often use slightly less with wash liquids and fabric conditioners and still gain the same results, with the product lasting longer as well so therefor saving money and making it a more economical purchase. I won't list the ingredients as these can be found if interested on the back of the bottle as this review is about my own personal experience of me using it. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to try it as it has left my clothes clean, relatively crease free (well within reason), smelling wonderful whilst feeling soft against the skin and most importantly hasn't irritated mine or any of my family's skin. I have found it to be particularly effective results wise when used on my bedding as the scent seems to last for days afterwards and is certainly inviting when climbing under the covers on a night. That said though I am still going to deduct a star because of the usual high price tag that is attached though as you don't need a separate fabric conditioner then that could be wavered I suppose, but that is personal opinion. I will use this again but only when it is on offer as at over £3 it is out of my weekly price range. For more information go to www.unilever.com
I am really funny about smells and everything I have has to smell nice. Thats why I was so excited when I first saw Surf's Vanilla and Black Orchid washing detergent - I love vanilla. I saw this at the supermarket and it was only £3 for a 630ml bottle which would last for 18 washes, so I decided to give it a go. The first thing I noticed about this product was that the design of the bottle was really nice. It is black with white orchids on the front. It is nice enough not to have to hide away in the cleaning cupboard. I decided to use this washing liquid first on my clothes because my son has really sensitive skin so I wanted to test it first. I set the washing machine to 30 degrees (my usual temperature) and washed my clothes. When I opened the bottle, a lovely smell wafted out, and when I dried my clothes later on, this lovely smell filled the whole kitchen. When I had washed my clothes, I noticed that all of the marks on my clothes had been removed, and also that a lot of my clothing did not need ironing. All of the clothes smelt gorgeous and they felt lovely and soft. I did not suffer any skin irritation after wearing the clothes, so I decided to use the Surf liquid to wash my children's clothes. My son put the clothes on and his sensitive skin was absolutely fine. This really shocked me because the only liquid I can use normally is Fairy or his skin flares up like mad. The other thing I noticed was that the smell of the liquid stayed on the clothes until after they had been worn. The liquid smells of vanilla with a slightly different tone to normal vanilla, which must be the orchid. You can buy the liquid from all of the main supermarkets. I think this product offers brilliant value for money because, although it says to use a full capful per wash, I can usually get away with using half of that amount, so a bottle usually lasts me 2 - 3 weeks. Also, due to the lovely smell and the fact that it makes your clothes lovely and soft, you do not need to use fabric conditioner, so you can save money there. If you're not too keen on vanilla, there are many other varieties in this range, which are: Jasmine & Black Gardenia Lavender & Oriental Blossom Sunshine Lemons & Bergamot Tropical Flowers & Ylang Ylang I have yet to try the other varieties, but I will be doing soon.
Having got back from my Midlands trip on Friday, I had a fair bit of washing to do. So getting it all unpacked and into the washing machine I remembered that I had got a new washing powder ( well not powder, a bottled liquid as I can't use powder down my drains!) that I had used once before I went and remembered it having such a lovely smell. So after packing the machine up I opened the draw (as this is a washing liquid that goes into the washing machine draw rather than into one of those ball things that you sometimes get to put on top of your clothes in the machine!), and took this Surf "Twilight Sensations" Vanilla and Black Orchid bottle out of the cupboard (what happened to just old plain bio or non bio, such posh names now!) and unscrewed the large black lid off. Straight away you get the smell come wafting straight out of the black plastic posh looking bottle that is so lovely, it reminds me off a good quality softener that has that rich strong flowery scent. I can't say that I can smell vanilla, which is good as I don't think I would like that too much, but not knowing what Black Orchid smells like, then this must be it!. With the machine halfway through the wash I'm starting to get the smell in the kitchen and by the time it has finished and I have opened the washing machine door the whole kitchen smells great and fresh. The smell still lingers on the clothes even after they have been hanging on the line for the afternoon, which is nice, as I didn't have any softener left for this wash and thought that the smell would disappear which it didn't. What attracted me to this particular bottle of washing liquid was the bottle, if I'm honest. As it is quite striking being in a black and gold plastic bottle and comes with it's own measuring cup in the form of the lid. Each measure is 35ml which is enough for one wash. If I'm only doing a small wash then I would use less than this as it goes a long way. This washing liquid can wash your washing even on a cold wash, but is not suitable for pre-washes though. Being a biological washing liquid this can do all sorts of dirty washing, but some people may have an allergy to biological liquids ( as I know my nephew has!) or the perfumes that are in this liquid. You can get 18 washes from the one bottle, but as I said earlier it can be made to go further if your washing isn't to dirty or you are doing smaller washes. It is nice to be able to get a nice smell to your bedding and towels in particular and I have since discovered that Comfort have bought out a softener in the same fragrance of Vanilla and Black Orchid which does have a distinct Vanilla smell to it so it will be interesting later today when I put the two together!. I got my bottle from Morrisons who at present are selling it for £2.00 for a 630ml bottle, but it usually sells for around the £3.00 mark so not to expensive. They also do a 10 pack capsule pack as well. I'm not sure if they do this in a powder form as I don't use that. So Surf say that they have got together with a world famous perfume house to give us this lovely smelling washing liquid, so well done to Surf!. So as Surf has always put on their bottles "small" and "mighty" they have that right on track as you only need a "small" amount and the smell is "mighty" I will give this 5 Dooyoo stars as it is really lovely!.
I'm one of them people that buys the cheapest washing powder as long as it's one of the brands I trust, there's always one of them on offer so I don't think I hardly ever pay full price for washing powder! This Twilight Sensations Surf was a madly low price of £1.50 in the tiny supermarket by me, I think it's a Cost Cutter shop but am not sure but it's worth having a look if you live by one of them because they all have the same offers on at the same time usually. This Vanilla And Black Orchid washing liquid is in a Small And Mighty bottle, the thin bottle will do 18 loads and living in a house with 5 people in it that means just over a weeks worth of washing. You only have to use a cap full in each load and if you're doing a smaller load you can use even less than that. If you sniff the bottle it just smells like any other washing liquid, it's got a bit of a sweet smell about it but nothing that would make you think it was a special sophisticatted liquid like the bottle is supposed to make you think. It cleans all the clothes well and even gets proper tough marks and stains out of them. The best one was yesterday when I looked after my baby cousin for a few hours, she got baby food down her top and when I changed her and washed it the Surf got it all out. I remember how hard baby food is to get out because my little sister was a proper messy eater when she was a baby and she had loads of clothes ruined because we couldn't get the stains out. It leaves the clothes quite soft as well even if you haven't used a fabric softener. When the clothes are dry that's when you get the lovely smell come onto them, then the vanilla comes out quite strong and even though you can't smell it all the time you get a nice whiff of it sometimes when you move about. I don't know what a black orchid smells like but my clothes have deffo got a bit of a flowery smell when they're dry so it must be that. The normal price is £3.00 for this size bottle and if I had to pay full price then I would because it's wicked washing liquid, only if there was no other decent ones on offer though because there are some proper bargains about at the minute for washing powder and stuff. Recommended... makes your clothes smell gorgeous and cleans them good too!!!
I do love a good fabric conditioner!, I think that there is nothing nicer than taking fresh smelling washing out of a machine and being greeted with freshness when you grab a fresh towel in the morning. Obviously the most important things is how the fabric conditioner looks after and cares for your clothes and fluffy and soft they make your clothes. ===== The Product ===== Twilight Sensations is a new range for the brand Surf. The bottle I chose was the Vanilla and Black Orchid, I was drawn to the bottle as its a sleek design as you can see in the picture and the black and gold coloring made it look like a luxury item, I know I am a ad executives dream come true!. ====== Scent ===== When you first open the bottle the scent hits you straight away and it's the Vanilla that comes through strongly and the orchid is actually quite subtle although you can tell that its there. The scent was filling my kitchen when the washing machine was on and when the washing was dry the scent was more subtle but still strong enough to fill my linen cupboard with freshness. ====== Did It Have The Soft Factor ====== I know it's a cliche and a company's slogan but my washing really did have a softness that you can feel. My towels were fluffy and really soft to the touch and looked as though they had been injected with some collagen!. I found that on my husbands work shirts and my kids uniforms when they came out of the machine they were virtually crease free and only need a quick touch with the iron. ===== Did The Freshness Last ====== The scent and both the smooth feel of the laundry stayed as fresh as the first day and my linen cupboard had the same freshness all week and I noticed that the few towels I put in the bathroom kept the bathroom smelling fresh for a week and they kept that lovely fluffy feeling until they were used. ====== How Long Does It Last ===== It states on the bottle that you get 18 washes if using one cup in each load and I found that one cap was more than enough, in fact when I was getting close to running out I only used half a cup and that still gave me good results. ====== My Conclusion ====== I think that this is a fabulous fabric conditioner. It kept my laundry feeling and smelling fresh all week and I found that the clothes barley needed any ironing after which is definitely a winner in my book!. It is also worth noting that it works even in cold water and as I am trying to be more energy efficient I have tried using it in cold water and it does indeed work.
I had never used a Laundry Liquid before, but ended up trying this because I had a coupon for this, and also it was on a good offer before I used the coupon. This normally retails for just under £3 in my local Asda, but it was on Rollback to £2. I had a 50p off coupon from the free Asda magazine so I got it for £1.50. Surf is my Washing Power of choice and I have used it for years, but looking at this liquid and being told this just goes exactly where the powder goes, I just felt it wasn't right! The Bottle is alright looking. It is a thick, sturdy feeling plastic bottle. It isn't that large, but on the front I am told this will wash 21 average sized loads. The bottle has a plastic wrap around label which is thick, and shiney. The bottle is black with a black screw lid, so stands out against the nice pastel coloured bottle on the shelf. There is a bit colour in the middle with the Surf branding against a white background and some floral designs there as well. To use you measure out a capful of liquid and this will wash a full load of laundry. On the back it gives dosage directions if you are washing less clothes, but I normally wait until I have a full enough load to justify doing the washing. When you see the amount of liquid for a load it doesn't look that much, but they know what they are talking about. The liquid was quite heavily fragranced and the sweetness of the Vanilla mixed with the heavier Orchid scent was nice. It gave a good contrast. The liquid had a nice sheen to it, and it sounds odd but I thought it would soften the clothes well, as well as clean them. When washed and dried the smell of the liquid had disappeared slightly, but still left behind a lovely soft scent. This was fragrant for the day I was wearing my top, and when i pulled it on the next day I could still smell the scent. A nice Laundry Liquid to use, but I don't think it was worth the normal retail price as it wasn't that special. If it stayed around the £1.80 mark, or was available in larger bottles which made it more economical to buy, then I would probably buy this more often.
Having brought up a large family, and undertaken more loads of washing than I care to remember, one liquid which I have used time and time again is Surf. I don't use it for coloured items, as these are too delicate and need a special colour liquid to keep them vibrant. Surf is the biological powerful tool I use to eliminate grime from the collars of my husband's work shirts, which face the London underground on a daily basis, as well as all white items I have, including my white linen sheets and towels. The asset Surf has over many products in this category is that it is cheap, and regularly on offer, so it is not unusual to pick up a bottle which does 18 washes for £2. Recently too there has been an explosion of alternative fragrances to choose from which has meant the washing seems less daunting when you can treat it to fragrances such as "Lemon and Bergamot" or "Tangerine". However Surf has just launched a newbie on the block called "Twilight Sensations Vanilla and Black Orchid". This is a delight and one to try for sure. The bottle is a concentrated liquid and is part of their "Small and Mighty" range which they developed to reduce carbon emissions during transport. It also helps the consumer because the bottles are smaller and less heavy to carry home. They have also launched one called Jasmine and Black Gardenia in this category. Jasmine and Black Gardenia and this fragrance Vanilla and Black Orchid are their new premium ranges, and you should expect to see these for about £1 more than the other liquids they market, I paid £3.91 for mine at Ocado where the basic ranges are £2.91, but as I said earlier you may find an offer soon for any of these products. Surf has collaborated with the Swiss perfume house "Firmenich" to create this fragrance which they are expecting to appeal to women! Surf is actually expanding in their sales and share in the market, and over the last year the market share has grown from 5.4 to 7.5%. The UK has spent 76 million on Surf over the last year-that's a lot of laundry! The bottle is an almost black with a setting depicting orchids which illuminate the horizon with a spectacular luminous glow. This bottle looks very expensive and classy, and extremely attractive for the kitchen shelf. My son was amazed when he saw this and commented that he thought it would be perfect to use on laundry destined to be worn for a night out! The liquid smells really lovely with a strong vanilla scent, and the manufacturers claim this will produce excellent results even as low as 15 degrees. Now I am sorry to tell you that I can't test this theory out because my husband is in love with Espares, the internet based company who supply parts for broken appliances. His love of tinkering and fixing things, together with my daughter who is doing a degree in saving the planet at uni, means we have an old machine with a million new parts which trundles on quite happily, but does not have the new low temperature features of an up to date model. However I do use 30 degrees and find this liquid works beautifully. The incredible thing about this liquid is that it not only smells beautiful, but it removes stains first time. I have never needed to use stain removers at all, and we regularly have stained laundry with items such as tomato, oranges, and grass, and these vanish without a trace with the first wash. On removal from the machine the laundry smells really fresh, and I don't always use a fabric softener because of this, and so again this is cost effective, though I often add some if the item is something I want to smell fresh for longer, maybe if it isn't worn daily or weekly and is going to languish in a drawer for a while. They also make this product in capsules and in powder. I don't use powders as I was forever seeing residue on the clothes unless I used an aggressive washing cycle, and as my machine sits behind doors it was difficult to pour into the dispenser, but you could try these other products as they may work for you. The great thing about this liquid is that you don't need a dosing ball, but can pour this straight into the drawer of your machine. This suits me as those little plastic pots were always going missing when I had them, probably because my cats used them as footballs. The only downside of this product is that it is biological and I know some people can't tolerate these chemicals on their skin, and so this is something to bear in mind when considering purchase. Having said that my son suffers from mild eczema, and he has never had a reaction to this liquid, so I must assume it is well rinsed out. This is another attribute I must award to this product- that it does rinse clean away leaving no residues at all. In September there will be an advertising campaign which will include a fairy tale advert intended to suggest the mystery of the twilight hour. That should be interesting! Surf takes me right back in my mind to the days of it being a square deal! Cheap and out shined by Persil and others, but they have risen above this now and certainly intend to build on this with their new products which are anything but basic. I really love this product. It has a fragrance which outshines the others in the more basic range, and just this last week garments which I had washed the few days before were still scented with the perfume of this highly effective laundry liquid when I put them on in the morning. This new fragrance is maybe more expensive, but it is something I am planning to continue to purchase to use on my best white things. This is because the cleaning abilities of this product are outstanding, but the fragrance is the attribute for me, which lingers longer and is absolutely gorgeous. The most noticeable fragrance is actually on my bed linen which is pure white linen and it smells wonderful when you climb into it last thing at night. I haven't added any softeners at all and I have also noticed that after line drying these sheets are much less creased than with other laundry liquids, so the end result is fresh bed linen which is more crease free. This is very important to me as these are 100% linen, which I prefer to cotton, but they can look creased with some detergents and I don't iron them because it is a chore beyond belief! This is a brilliant new product and all that remains for me to do is to try the companion product Jasmine and Black Gardenia which sounds equally decadent!
