~Small and Mighty~
Small and Mighty is a range of detergents from laundry brand Surf. Surf is available in powder, tablet, liquitab and liquid form and there are various scents available.
Sunshine Orchard of Lemons and Mandarin Flowers is the liquid detergent I will be discussing this evening. This is a bio liquid detergent which is enriched with essential oils. It is suitable to be used in water as cold as 15c. The detergent is presented in a curvy white bottle with yellow and pink flowers on it. There is a cap which doubles up as a measuing cup and a plastic lid over the top.
This detergent can be used in two different ways. The liquid can be poured into the washing machine drawer or poured into the plastic lid :
*35ml - regular loads
*52ml - heavy or dirty loads
*17ml - per 5l for hand washing
A 1l bottle of this detergent retails at around £4.50 in supermarkets. It is currently on offer in Tesco priced at £3.00. This does 28 washes.
I usually buy whatever detergent or powder that is on offer. Last month I made a purchase of Small and Mighty. I do prefer powders but I would have struggled to carry a big box on that occasion and this was on a good deal. I have just finished the bottle and moved onto using a big box of Surf powder.
I often do up to 10 loads of washing a week between work, nursery, towels and bed clothing. We aren't a particularly dirty family - well my son is immaculate when it comes to eating but Mummy can be a little sloppy and messy! Anyway, this liquid is very easy to use and I tried it both ways as detailed on the bottle. The bottle seems to get a little sticky through use which is annoying. This detergent is of a creamy consistency and has a soapy, citrussy scent.
Performance wise, I do my washings on a 30c quick wash or a 40c regular wash as I don't have a 15c option to test it out. I normally use 35ml (ish). I preferred to use this in the drum as opposed to the drawer as it seemed to seep into the laundry and bubble up quicker in the machine. It does work both ways though and other than the bubbles, there isn't much of a difference between both methods.
This liquid detergent washes fairly well. It cleans an average load of clothing but isn't as hardworking on stains which require a few washes to be clean again. It refreshes clothing and my laundry smells fresh and clean when I take it out the machine. I haven't noticed any particular softening factors and the scent isn't very strong on my laundry at all. I do prefer to add conditioner for scent and softness. This detergent is suitable for my families sensitive skin.
Whilst this detergent did clean my clothing, I wasn't completely impressed with stain cleaning, softness and scent. It just didn't seem to be powerful enough to receive top marks all round. I did manage to get around 30 washes from my bottle which works out at 10p a wash when on offer - not bad really.
4 stars - ok for averagely dirty clothing but perhaps not ideal for a family load. I won't bother with it again.
Thanks for reading :)
I originally posted this to ciao April 2012 and it has been updated for dooyoo with current prices.
I normally use Ariel Active Gel, but recently I have been trying to save money while shopping for essentials. I noticed that Surf was on offer in Asda a 54 wash bottle (1.5l) for just £5. You can also get an 18 and 28 wash bottle.
Surf small and mighty comes in four different fragrances;
Tropical Oasis with ylang ylang and lily,
Mediterranean Orchard with lemons and mandarin flower,
Secret Garden with lavender and jasmine,
Mystic Waterfall of lotus flower and wild freesia.
My favourite currently is Mystic waterfall. You can also get Surf small and mighty in a liqutab as well as a powder.
The bottle states that the liquid contains essential oils. The liquid is 2x concentrated so you only need to use one capful. When you open the bottle the fragrance is really strong, as I said above I like the Mystic Waterfall variety which smells really fresh and reminds me of being outdoors in the spring. I have used the other varieties too all of which smell nice. To use the liquid you add one small capful into your washer drawer.
I have so far been really impressed with this liquid. It removes all sorts of everyday stains in the first wash. I am currently weaning my daughter so her bibs and clothes get really messy and most baby food seems to be orange! Other liquids I have tried haven't managed to remove the stains this seems to do the trick. The rest of my washing comes out looking clean and the smell is really nice, even when you wear the clothes a few days after washing they still smell really nice. Particularly my towels.
I would definately buy this again, it is so much cheaper than a lot of other brands and always seems to be on offer in the supermarkets. You only need to use a small amount so a bottle lasts a long time.
we have an 18 month old son and it gets most marks off his clothes without having to use stain remover. i do stock up on it when i see it on offer though as its not the cheapest washing liquid but it does smell fab! If you use the cap to measure the dose then it does last a while. You definately get what you pay for with this washing liquid.
The fragrance is really nice but it doesn't last that long but having said that it does make my husband's farm stuff smell ok and it does manage to get most of the marks off his overalls without too much hassle or the need for stain remover. If your laundry does have some stubborn marks on it then i would use a bit of stain remover. It's just as good as the Persil equivilent if not better and it certainly smells better. Overall a good washing liquid that works well and has a nice fragrance - anything to make the laundry chore more bearable is worth its weight in gold!
Surf washing liquid (previously the tablets) has been a product i have used on and off for about 7 years. When i havent used it it has been because another brand has been on offer and cheaper. What first attracted me to surf was the price. i find it hovers around the 2.96 mark in asda for a 18 wash bottle where as other brands are nearer the £4 mark for the same.
Its not just price but the quality and fragrance. I have never had an issue with surf not cleaning properly. The fragrance i am currently using is the 'tropical oasis of ylang ylang and lily'. I have found sometimes tropical can be a sickly smell but this is a delicate fragrance yet it sticks to the clothes so they stay a fresher for longer. It is not such a strong perfumed smell as a delicate flowery scent.
The surf range all come in a white bottle with coloured label and matching lid. The colour goes with the fragrance. This one for example is bright pink coloured. Surf is simple to use you dont need a separate measuring device you just pop one cap full in the detergent drawer (may be more if you have heavily soiled clothes or hard water) and thats it. I find the liquid is not too thick and gloopy like other brands where your waiting for the cap to empty its straight out the lid and away you go with the laundry.
In our house me and the kids can be slightly sensitive sometimes to some products but this has never caused us any problems and the smell is fab!
My husband has very sensitive skin when it comes to detergents and my daughter used to suffer from eczema add to it that we have a baby in the house and I need a good gentle laundry detergent. I believe I have found the best in Surf small and mighty.
In the range there are 4 different fragrances, lavendar and jasmine, sunshine lemons and bergamot, ylang ylang and lily and lotus flower and wild freesha. You can buy the product in a number of wash sizes depending on your needs there's 18, 28 and 54 wash bottles and the current selling prices at Asda are £2, £4.49 and £8.66 respectively so as you can see at the moment you get better value buying more of the 18 wash bottles than you would buying a large bottle. I am quite sad and actually do price comparisons every month for the big household things we use and actually find that the above madness is often the case as one size only seems to go on offer at a time.
Generally if it is the better value I buy the 54 wash bottle as I do about 10 washes a week in our house, the large bottle is quite heavy however and has a handle incorporated into the bottle to pour it out so you do have to careful you don't pour too much. As with most products like this the cap on the top is used to dose the correct amount for the wash, this is a concentrated product so you don't use as much the recommendations are, 4-5kg wash 35ml of product which is a capful but for 6-8kg or with hard water add an extra 17ml or half a cap. This product is suitable to use down to temperatures of 15 degrees to help the environment they also say that as the product is concentrated it is made with 1/2 the water, has 1/2 the packaging and therefore 1/2 the lorries on the road.
In my experieince this product has not caused any reactions with any of my household members, it smells lovely although I couldn't say this is on the clothing as I use fabric conditioner and that is what i can smell on the washing. I have a 6kg machine which is always full and I only ever use about 3/4 of a cap ful as I don't believe you need as much as they say, my clothes always come out clean and I never have to rewash them. The only thing I would say about this product which is the same for all products I have tried is that it will not remove orange baby food from bibs and clothing without an added stain remover.
This is a good product that does the job and gets my clothes clean , gentle on skin and is the best value in it's kind of range unless one fo the others i.e Persil etc go on a good offer. I stock up on this when it's on offer as it is a brand i trust completely, highly recommended
Every Saturday without fail is bedding today (except for Christmas Day, of course!) where I strip the bed and replace with freshly washed sheets, pillowcases and duvet cover. I don't know if this is all in my mind, but I find that I sleep much better in clean bedding. There are two absolute essentials for me when choosing laundry products; the first of course is that it carries out an effective job and removes any dirt and the second has to be that it leaves a gorgeous fragrance. Ever since I left my parent's home many years ago I have used Bold powder, which was then substituted with their gel and whilst I change around with many of my beauty products I would never change my laundry products.
However, whilst carrying out my weekly shop at Tesco Extra a couple of months ago prominently displayed on the end of one of the aisles were dozens upon dozens of bottles of a Univer brand named Surf Small and Mighty in a lavender and oriental blossom fragrance. As I absolutely adore the calming and relaxing aroma of lavender the display immediately caught my attention and I was drawn in by the clever marketing techniques of Tesco. There was a huge sign informing customers that two bottles of the product could be purchased for a lower price and whilst I am unable to remember how much I paid I promptly placed them in my trolley. I started using the first bottle immediately after my initial purchase; after which I reverted back to my Bold gel. However, when tidying through my cleaning cupboard a week ago I rediscovered the second bottle of Surf and this review discusses my experience of using the product.
APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCT
The 1 litre plastic bottles that I purchased are considerably eye catching in appearance with their white background together with dozens of blue, pink and purple coloured flowers scattered around its' edges. The familiar logo of Surf is located in the centre of the bottle and situated below we are informed that this is a concentrated bio liquid detergent and is sufficient for 28 washes. As the rear of the bottle is considerably cluttered with so much information I really did not know where to read first and if I'm honest I don't think I even looked at it until I started scrutinising the text for the purpose of this review. There is a small table providing us with directions for use and whilst we are advised that 1 cap should be used in the washing machine drawer I tend to guess and simply pour the runny white detergent into the drawer straight from the bottle. The purple screw off measuring cap is located on the top of the bottle, but as stated I never use this method. I am currently using my second bottle with my first lasting me around the recommended number of washes, as I carry out approximately 10 - 12 washes per week where my first bottle lasted me just over two weeks.
MY EXPERIENCE OF USING SURF SMALL AND MIGHTY
My first impressions of the lavender fragrance were probably 7 out of 10, as I didn't feel it resembled the natural aroma of this gorgeous plant. However, I was of the opinion that the fragrance would strengthen whilst in the machine and that my clothes and bedding would be beautifully fragranced. When my washing machine had completed its' cycle I removed the wet laundry and raised it to my nose and I have to say that I was bitterly disappointed, as I could detect no fragrance whatsoever. What happened to the essential oils, which in my opinion are always very strong when in other products? Where was the calming and relaxing lavender fragrance? As I placed the laundry into my tumble dryer I thought perhaps the non-existent aroma would suddenly appear after sixty minutes of drying, but sadly, I was wrong.
Whilst my washing was clean I felt quite cheated that I could not witness any aroma whatsoever and I was disappointed that my bedding did not have that familiar "just washed" fragrance. Unfortunately, for the reasons provided above I cannot recommend this product and it receives only 3 stars from me.
The detergent can be used in a washing machine temperature of 15 degrees C and for dirty washing a higher temperature should be used. The detergent is not suitable for using on wools and silks. The detergent should be kept out of reach of children and kept away from the eyes. Surf is a member of the Cleaner Planet Plan where they are working to ensuring that the products they manufacture are caring for the environment. Once empty the bottle can be recycled.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Surf Small and Mighty is widely available in a variety of fragrances and to provide you with an up-to-date price I have checked the Tesco website and at the time of writing (2 February 2011) I would advise that you can purchase a 1 litre bottle for £4.59. As I felt this was a little pricey I also checked out the Sainsburys' website and learned that it is £1.59 cheaper with a 1 litre bottle currently on offer at £3.00.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
I only ever buy washing products that are on offer and my latest bargain was Surf Small And Mighty with Essential Oils. I bought it from my local Tesco. They had a great offer on of buy one get two free! A 1 litre bottle of Surf Small and Mighty costs £4.49 so it was a nice saving to get 3 for that price.
The Surf I'm reviewing today is sunshine lemons and bergamot. Its biological and mainly for automatic machines.
The bottle is plastic as you expect and is mainly white and tallow in colour. The bottle is a slight tear drop shape and has a pink screw top lid which is also the measuring cap. The main part of the bottle is decorated with lemons and yellow flowers. On the front it has Surf small & mighty with essential oils sunshine lemon and bergamot It also states that it is concentrated and will do 28 washes.
On the back you will find the directions for use which are in the main 1 capful per wash unless it's a heavily soiled load then you are advised to add an extra half a cup.
I personally only ever use half a cap of washing liquid as I rarely do a full load and I find this cleans just as well as a full cap, also means my washing liquid goes much further.
The Surf small and mighty is suitable for use at low temperatures and claims to give "outstanding results at 15 degrees".
The back of the bottle also has some warnings such as keep away from children, wash your hands after use and not to use if you have a skin condition or sensitive skin.
The actual washing liquid is thick and white, it has quite a strong fragrance. It smells mainly of lemons with a slight floral hint. The smell is very fresh, in fact its one of the nicest washing liquids I've smelt.
I tried the surf small and mighty on a regular wash at 30 degrees. The smell from the machine as it was washing was lovely, I could actually smell the lemons every time I walked past the machine.
When I took my laundry out it was clean and fresh. I have white towels and bed linen ( something I often regret with my 3 cats) and these came up lovely and white. I was very impressed. My washing kept its fresh smell for a couple of days.
Over all I was pleased with the Surf small and mighty. It works well on both whites and colours. It leaves laundry clean and smelling lovely and fresh.
I would not hesitate to recommend this product, its one of the nicest washing liquids I've tried.

As mentioned in previous reviews, I do normally use liquid tabs when doing a wash, however as I'm on a bit of an economy drive I went for the cheapest laundry product for the best value I could. The product that stepped up was Surf small and mighty. I have never used Surf before and liked the idea that this range was good for the environment as was concentrated. Therefore it is in a smaller bottle, so not as much packaging is required. The liquid as it is concentrated does not need to be in such large quantities and so you can use less.
The bottle I got was supposed to be enough for 42 washes I got more out of it than this as I didn't use a full cap each time (as you are supposed to). I didn't scrimp but I found after the first couple of washes that I would put in just a bit less liquid and the results were the same, still great. I only use this product on coloureds and darks, not white shirts as I find that I need a bio detergent for them. This is really effective on all different cycles that I put through on the machine. In essence this product does get your clothes clean and what else do you want really??
This variance of Surf is supposed to smell of lemons and bergamot, now I don't know what bergamot is however the smell of lemons is lovely. As I hang out my washing the scent that comes of my clothes is lovely and clean and fresh, not overpowering but is that really nice clean smell. It does wear off slightly however it does still remain in the clothes when I have ironed them as well.
I found that Surf liquid detergents are on offer in Sainsbury's so I stocked up a few bottles of them. Having two active boys means loads of laundry and of course loads of laundry detergent. One of the washing liquid I have chosen was Surf Sunshine Lemons & Bergamot Automatic Biological Washing Liquid.
It comes in a white plastic bottle with yellow and white flowers and yellow lemons on it. There is a big blue Surf logo in the middle. Below the logo you can read small & mighty with essential oils. The bottle is 100% recyclable. It has a yellow cap which can be used as a measure. This washing liquid is double concentrated so a little is enough. I bought a bottle of 730 ml which is enough for 20 washes. It was 2 pounds as it was on offer, its full price is about 3 pounds depending on the supermarket where you buy it.
The bottle wasn't as tempting as the black ones (Twilight Sensations) but I opened it and it had a nice scent which was floral and lemon scent together. I wanted to try it and I found it really nice on our clothes as well.
My sons are really effective in collecting stubborn stains on their clothes so I need to have an effective detergent to clean them. I found that Surf cleaned only a few of them so I had to add stain remover to the next washing to have clean clothes. On our clothes it was perfect. So I will use the 3 bottles I bought and I will not buy it in the future as I have to add stain remover to my kids' clothes to get them clean.
While in the bottle it has a very strong scent which is both floral and lemony. After using it in the washing machine I could felt a more dominant lemon scent but overall the strength of it was quite weak. After the clothes were dried in the conservatory they had only a very slight scent. I really liked its lemony and floral scent but I can hardly notice it on the clean dry clothes.
15-30% Anionic surfactants, Non-ionic surfactants, 5-15% Soap, >5% Perfume, Polycarboxylates, Phosphonates, Optical Brighteners, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, Enzymes, Citronellol, Cinnamyl Alchohol, Amyl Cinnamal.
I am not impressed by this washing liquid. The manufacturer says that it works even in cold water. Well I used it in 40C water and it removed only a part of the stains. Previously I used fabric conditioner which had long lasting scent on the clothes but this washing liquid can be hardly noticed after the washing machine finished the programme.
So I think the 2 pounds price was good value for it but I won't buy this product in the future as it cannot remove the stains out of my children's clothes nor has lovely long-lasting scent.
I have never been a fan of normal powder detergent, as they always seem to leave white marks on my clothes which drives me crazy so I thought a liquid detergent would be just the ticket.
A 730ml bottle costs £2.00, which does about 20 washes. I'm not too sure how this liquid would work on heavily soiled clothes as we never have anything that's really stained or dirty but for general washes this detergent has worked great. I have used all the different fragrances that Surf has to offer in this range and I have loved them all. This one is no different and really is sunshine in a bottle. Just a capful of liquid in a 30 degree wash will leave your clothes smelling gorgeous! During the winter I actually didn't mind having the washing hanging about the house because it made our rooms smell so clean and refreshing.
I have not had any problems with any residue being left on our clothes and they have always come out perfectly clean. I've also not had any skin reactions which can be really troublesome with some detergents. I also love the fact that the smell really stays with this detergent, even when clothes have been stuck in a cupboard for a while they still smell divine.
Another positive point is the size of the bottle as the liquid is concentrated so you don't have to use much and therefore don't have a massive container in your cupboard of liquid or powder. I used to hate having to find room to store a massive box of laundry powder that would inevitably end up making a mess all over the place. This bottle takes up no room at all and is much more attractive to have around too!
This was on offer for £2 in my local Tesco last week, so always keen on a bargain and in need of detergent, I thought why not.
I generally use Fairy non-bio gel, I really dislike powders, I don't know if it is me or them, but there is always residue left on the clothes afterwards.
So I was a bit sceptical that using less (whilst being able to wash at lower degrees) would A) Clean the clothes properly, considering the drum size of my machine and B)Leave my clothes smelling as gorgeous as the fragrance suggests when you first open it.
First load to get done was a dark wash, 30 degrees, in went a capful, which you put in the drawer, and not in the drum with the clothes. You can use softener with this product as well.
Once it finished, i opened the machine and started bringing out the clothes to a lovely smell. Really it is just beautiful. And it lasts. I often find that clothes come out of the machine smelling lovely but that fades once they dry. Not with this, and I have to say the smell is beautiful. Luckily it was a windy day too so out it went outside. The main reason I love this: My washing came in smelling like the way my mum gets hers to!! Finally. Might not sound like much, but I was always frustrated that there was no refreshing 'clean smell' (even though the clothes were clean) from my washing.
So far, 4 loads of washing been done with it and the results have always been great, whether it is dried inside or out.
I love walking in my mums house when she has her washing on, sweet, fruity and floral aromas flow around her house and make my head whirl as if up in the clouds taking a breath of fresh air in heaven! I am not exaggerating either! I'm trying to follow in her footsteps and want my house smelling exactly the same from my washing.
My mum swaps and changes her powder regularly as nobody in the household suffers from any skin conditions so I felt confident I could do the same. I've seen Surf powders many times on her washing machine so decided to try another one. Surf with essential oils - sunshine lemons and bergamot.
You can buy this scent in concentrated liquid and powder but I have only ever bought the powder. You can buy it in smaller boxes but I bought the larger 2.85kg 30 washes box for just under £5, which is significantly cheaper than other brands.
This version of Surf comes in the bright yellow coloured boxes, or bottles and the scent is given underneath the word Surf! The box is decorated beautifully with a lemon and flowers.
On the back of the box it says
'Contains uplifting Bergamot Oil - famous for being calming and refreshing'
'Aromatherapy for your clothes - Surf Sunshine Lemons and Bergamot contains natural essential oils. It infuses your clothes with uplifting fragrances and leaves them brilliantly clean'
Reading all this I couldn't wait to open the box and use it!
Upon opening it you are immediately hit by an intense lemony, refreshingly sweet scent. It is strong and the lemons are the dominant fragrance in the box! It is truly uplifting, a freshen your head citrus scent that lingers. I couldn't wait to wash my clothes in it and smell my citrusy clean clothes afterwards.
I done my washing as I usually do in the washing machine, adding my usual amount of white, stunningly scented powder and switched my machine on and waited patiently. The sweet smell still lingered and was stuck up my nose, it was luscious!
Now bearing in my mind I have twin toddlers who are always in a constant mess I often have to deal with stubborn stains and groggy clothes but I have used powders which have dealt with these adequately, I have even used a surf powder before that has dealt with said stains and marks with ease, this powder for me was a total disapointment though!
My washing had stopped and I removed the clothes from the washing machine. All of my clothes lacked life, fragrance and cleanliness to be honest.
I was expecting refreshingly clean scented clothing, with the majority of marks gone and looking full of life. Unfortunately I was met by most of the twins clothes still with the same marks, even simple ones such as chocolate and gravy which are usually so easy to remove with many powders I've used. The lemon scent that was so intense to begin with was not apparent at all, even when nuzzling my nose into my clothes I couldn't even smell a slight hint and my nose is quite sensitive to smells. My clothes just looked like they had been wet in a sink and hung upon a line not washed thoroughly and left smelling or looking clean and fresh.
I have mentioned I have used a surf powder before and I was impressed, it had a beautiful fragrance, it cleaned my clothes as I'd expected it too and the fragrance remained on my clothes after washing too! I found this powder a real let down which is such a shame as the smell to begin with is gorgeous, it is a real pity I found that it didn't work for me!
One good thing about it though was that it didn't irritate any of our skins, but any Surf powder doesn't seem to affect us despite it being such a strong perfumed powder. From my own personal experience of using this I wouldn't reccomend it, for me it didnt clean my clothes thoroughly like some Surf powders do nor did it leave a refreshing fragrance on my clothes, in fact I couldn't smell anything 'nice' at all!
I'm a sucker for the exotic varieties and fragrance combinations they give to washing detergent these days. I just want my washing to smell gorgeous and I only feel that it is truly clean and been washed properly if it has a fresh and invigorating smell.
Consequently I'm always on the look out for new varietiesand although I am usually disappointed I still believe that they may have something to offer. Most brands I have tried have been quite disappointing on the smell test and instead I have relied upon fabris conditioner to product the results I am after. Problem is, I don't want to use fabric conditioner on all my washing and then I seem to be lacking that fresh fragrant smell.
I tend to opt for liquid detergent, my washing machine seems to like it more and I have become quite fond of the concentrated varieties as it means less packaging which of course is more environmentally friendly and also less cupboard space in my all too small house. I spotted the Surf Small & Mighty Sunshine Lemons & Bergamont in my local Tescos during my weekly shop. The bottle just jumped out at me visually, it made a strong impact with it's bright bold colours contrasting with a white bottle.
The combination of this variety and the fact that it contained essential oils really appealed to me, especially as it included bergamont which is one of my absolute favourite smells. I thought that if they had pulled it off, it would make my washing smell absolutely divine. I picked up a bottle which was 730ml and it stated on the outside that this would be enough for 20 washes. It cost £2.87, which I actually though was quite reasonable compared to some of the other brands I had tried.
Ok so first wash, I unscrewed the cap which was also the 35ml dosage cap which apparently was all was needed for one wash. I wasn't all that convinced as it did seem a very small amount, but hey I thought i'd go with it and if I needed more I know for next time.
Wash done.... well they pulled it off, when I opened the machine, the wet washing smelt gorgeous and it still smelt great when it had been line dried. It also washed really well, I had no problems, the whole load was clean, fresh and smelling scrummy. I havbe continued to use this brand of surf ever sine, it just makes me feel smiley and I can rely on it for good results
I have never been fan of liquid laundry detergent but I am a firm fan of a bargain and as this Surf Small & Mighty was recently on offer in Tesco AND I had a money off token (double whoopie!) I thought I'd give it a try.
This liquid detergent smells very strong in the bottle and almost made me sneeze when I first took a sniff. However, it produces a fabulous clean fragrance throughout the house when clothes are tumbling (I've got the tumble dryer on now and it's drowning out the smell of teenage boy!) and smells even fresher when clothes are dried on the line outside. The fragrance stays on the clothes in the drawer or wardrobe for days and it is a pleasure opening the airing cupboard to fetch clean towels.
This liquid is promoted as being effective at 30 degrees so that is what I did most of my washing at when first trying this out. At 30 degrees most of the stains on the washing were shifted but it did leave behind a little curry residue on a couple of white school shirts (will the kids never learn where their moutns are?) . It also left mud splatters on pale pink trousers after the first wash but lifted them at 40 degrees on a second wash (the trousers were worn in a heavy downpour on a country walk and were caked in mud splatters from an old quarry so very heavily soiled).
My youngest son suffers from moderate eczema and this biological washing liquid did cause a flare up on his skin after a week of use and I have since returned to non-biological detergent for his clothes and bedding. The rest of the family have suffered no ill effects.
Best used for
Bedding and towels as the smell is wonderful. I find the Bergamot fragrance particularly relaxing and it is lovely getting into fresh, clean bedding with a fragrance that gently wafts me off to sleep. Indeed, a little research has informed me that Bergamot essential oil is said to help counter a cold, decrease the effects of PMS and help de-stress. This detergent works effectively on lightly soiled clothes at 30 degrees but check for potential stains first as these may not lift at this low temperature.
Usually retails in the £2.80 region for 730ml but currently on offer in Sainsbury's for £2.00 until Mid Spetember.
Sunshine Lemons and Bergamot, are we talking Chanel, Dior or Guerlain ?
Guess again ! In fact I am referring to the new Surf Small and Mighty laundry liquid, currently on offer in Wilkinson's at just under £2 for a 730ml bottle.
Given that I can remember having to choose between Tide, Omo, Persil or just plain Surf powder these new and exciting laundry products prove a great temptation for me.
Liquitabs, liquids, powders, pearls, some are ingenious, others are great value for money and then there are a few that border on sheer extravagance.
If I was in Milan and the Surf Small and Mighty bottle was on the catwalk it would surely have to be one of the leading models.
The neat white plastic bottle is lathered with ripe juicy lemons and bergamot, it is attractive, eye-catching and very shapely.
I am always slightly dubious about buying the concentrated laundry liquids, I want to see the soap dispenser in the washing machine look loaded and ready to remove the dirt and grime.
Adding just one small capful seems miserly.
The pale lemon liquid is thick and creamy and Unilver have ensured that it is bursting with the fresh citrus smell that is nothing short of gorgeous. Put the sharp smell of lemon and then introduce the bergamot ( an orange citrus fruit) into the equation and you would think that the two together would be too much but it works well.
Unilever have stated that the product endorses their cleaner planet plan, in short Surf Small and Mighty concentrate uses half of the water to produce, there is only half of the usual amount of packaging to dispose of and it costs less to transport due to size.
The Surf Small and Mighty liquid is quite aptly named, one capful copes well with washing a full load.
It removes marks and stains with ease, even on a low temperature wash. On the bottle it states that the liquid can be used with success in a cold water wash, I cannot comment on that, I prefer to use a warm wash. (30 degrees)
Once my load of washing had swirled around inside of the tub for half an hour or so the sweet smell of the Sunshine Lemons and Bergamot seemed to have waned.
Yes, the fragrance was still hanging on in there but I would have loved to have been able to still smell that very appealing scent a little bit stronger than it was.
Seeing that the UK has been experiencing nothing but rain, rain and more rain the washing had to be tumble-dried.
Once the laundry was dry and ready to iron I could only just pick out the faintest of smells though the fabric was soft and clean and easy to iron.
Unilever point out that the fragrance infuses your clothes, which it does to some extent but it does seem to fade quite quickly.
My one small bottle contains enough liquid for 20 washes, at the price that I paid that is economical.
The Surf Small and Mighty laundry liquid is good and I think that I am expecting miracles for one small capful of liquid to be able to keep an entire load of laundry smelling of sunshine lemons and bergamot until hours later.
The Surf Small and Mighty liquid was still a good buy, as promised it washes well, it removes marks and stains and although the fragrance fades far more quickly than I would like it is still pleasant at the end of the day.
If Unilever offer the product at a good price then I would buy it again but if I had to choose between a concentrate and a powder then I would choose the powder.
You can use a drop of the liquid for hand washing if you choose to.
I have used Surf many times and consider it to be gentle on both skin and fabric and considering that it has been on the market for many years then it must be a favourite of many.
