Advantages: Compact double concentrated liquid detergent with essential oils
Disadvantages: not suitable for wool and silk
My Mother used Daz powder to do her washing in her old fashioned single tub washing machine, and so when I got married that was what I used, but eventually started trying other products and found Persil worked best as my one daughter had some skin problems. My family have grown up and left home and I'm back to washing for only two so find I don't have to buy washing products as often, so have been trying some more expensive products. I have used Surf Small and Mighty before but this bottle says it has Essential oils as well.
*The Bottle*
The white shapely plastic bottle has a bright yellow cap, and has lemons and yellow flowers on the bottle. The name Surf is in blue, it is "new", and it also tells me that it has essential oils plus sunshine lemons and bergamot. You all know what a lemon is, a sour citrus fruit, and bergamot is used mostly as flavouring in Earl grey tea and has an orange flavour. When the essential oil is used in aromatherapy applications it is has a revitalising, uplifting citrus aroma, with warm undertones and mixed with the lemon you can enjoy the same effect when sniffing the bottle.
It is double concentrated and my bottle will do 20 washes, using the lower dose. My bottle contains 730mls.
On the back is a guide for how much to use, depending on the amount of washing and how dirty it is. An extra half cap is needed for larger washes and hard water. It states it is also ideal for 30C washing programmes, so that helps save the environment a little and cuts down on your electricity bill.
*Information about Surf Small and Mighty. *
On the back of the bottle it says that "gorgeous things come in small packages", forget big is beautiful! and that this concentrated liquid detergent contains natural essential oils and is crammed full of fantastic fragrance. One tiny cap containing 35ml is all you need for your everyday wash and has a lingering fragrance that infuses your washing and lifts your senses.
*Do's and don'ts.*
* Always wash dark colours separately
* Keep away from children
* Rinse hands after use
* Check colour fastness before treating with neat liquid
* Do not use on wool and silk.
* Do not soak clothes with metal fasteners of flame resistant fabric.
*Who makes it? *
Surf is part of the Unilever group, a really well known company.
*What difference does 2 x concentrated make? *
Less is needed to do the washing, so bottles use less plastic and take up less room when being transported which is good for the environment. It is easier for you to carry home and takes up less room in your kitchen or utility.
*What does the Symbol mean on the pack? *
The symbol shows that it conforms to the charter of the International Association for soaps and detergents, it is a t-shirt which looks like a washing machine on a washing line, with a world background. You can find out more at
http://www.sustainable-cleaning.com/EN_symbol.htm l
*Does it work?*
Yes it most certainly it does. Usually our washing isn't really dirty, unless my husband has been gardening! The whites I washed at 40C looked beautifully clean, and smelled fresh. I measured the liquid in the cap and poured it into the dispenser drawer but you can add to the drum if you prefer in a dosing ball. The coloured washing included tops, shirts, socks, underwear, and tablecloths have been washed at 30C and all looked clean and smelled beautiful!
When I lifted the washing out of the machine it smelled fresh and clean and still had a lovely smell when dry. When ironing the washing the fragrance was still there, and it made ironing a bit more pleasurable. It's not too strong that my husband might notice his clothes smell of flowers but strong enough to smell really clean and fresh.
I actually used some too to hand wash a laptop bag I received as I am now secretary of a group, it absolutely stank of cigarette smoke, even though it has spent 3 years in a non smoking house. I was tempted to throw it away but after two soaks in Small and Mighty it smells reasonable so I'll keep it! I wish I could deal with the paperwork as easily.
*How much did it cost? *
Bought a few months ago on offer in Tesco it cost less than £2.00 but is back to £2.90 now so if you use only one measure it costs 14.5pence per wash. My advice is look out for offers and stock pile it as it doesn't take up much room.
*Verdict? *
An excellent washing liquid that leaves washing clean and fresh and being concentrated takes up less room.
Quote from a website about Surf "New Surf Sunshine Lemons and Bergamot offers a fantastic sensory experience that infuses your laundry with gorgeous citrus fragrances. Put on a load and let the uplifting essential oils invigorate and revitalise your family wash. It's time to re-awaken your senses and get your clothes brilliantly clean and lemon-fresh." And you know they are right, the washing is clean and smells fresh.
Summary: fresh smelling concentrated detergent
