Advantages: A great long lasting scent

Disadvantages: Watch out for the drippy lid!

All of us are keen to reduce the amount of energy we use and the amount of resources we use up...not just for the environment, but also for the costs, which continue to rise month after month!

In our busy house (and there are only two of us) we usually have at least one load of laundry a day and at weekends, with work shirts etc, we can often do three or four loads. I often sit aghast at friends with families who must spend their whole time tied to the washing machine... it is often never ending.

Now...we have made some concessions to reduce the amount of laundry we do. We wear our jeans more than once and will often 'air' our jumpers...if it is appropriate to do so ie. they do not stink. There are of course limits to what we can do to reduce the laundry loads..I for one have no intention of wearing my underpants for more than one day!

And so I looked also to my laundry detergent. Now it is not the most exciting thing in the world to do, but choosing the right detergent is of critical importance in my house! We have to ensure that the liquid or powder we choose has the following criteria:

1) Leaves a pleasant fragrance that lasts more than just through the drying process

2) Dissolves easily into the washing machine and does not leave a soapy residue (which I then have to clean out...yuk!)

3) Is cost effective

4) Comes in a suitable size to last a while

5) Is easy to keep clean as a product (for example - does not spill everywhere and make a mess on the container)

Surf 'Small and Mighty' has been an absolute gem of a find!!!

We purchased it as it was on a special offer and we got a 42 wash size container for under three pounds...a real bargain. I think this is due in part to the marketing of the product as there is a tendancy not to believe that the double concentrated ranges actually work...and one is often tempted to add just more than a capful...or two capfuls for a normal load of washing...just in case!

The container is bright and colourful and the instructions on the bottle are very clear indeed. I followed the instructions and added the liquid into the drawer of my washing machine. It suggested one cupful which is what I used...but I 'hung about' a bit to ensure that every drop fell into the drawer.

After a 55 minute cycle the washing came out and it looked very clean. The clothes, in particular the wollen items had a delightful smell to them and when the laundry was drying in our home, the smell permeated throughout the room it was drying in. I was very pleased.

My one criticism is concerning the bottle design...as hard as I have tried, I still end up with liquid on the neck of the bottle. I do not have the time to wash the lid out after every use, so I hope that this is something that the designers will consider in the future...surely the person who develops a lid that does not spill will make a fortune!

So would I use this again if it was not on a special offer? I think I would. the price is reasonable and the end result is very good. I particularly like the smell and the range of 'Small and Mighty' has a good range of perfumed washing liquids available.

Summary: If it is on special....buy it!
