Surf with essential oils.
While shopping a few weeks ago I had to get some some detergent as my wife was away on holiday I thought I would have a look and see what was available. Hmm confused by the massive selection on the shelves these days all the different brands, powders, tablets, capsules, bio and non-biological. I stood overwhelmed by the variety and different brands but then I saw some tester packs of Surf on offer, 10 liquid capsules for £2 which worked out quite good value compared to other packets. So I grabbed a couple of bag of these and put them in the trolley.
The fragrance so we are told are tropical lily and ylang ylang not that I know what these are supposed to smell like individually. There are also essential oils in the liquid which are supposed to enhance the fragrance of the detergent liquid.
I had a large load of clothes to wash so after sorting out the coloured clothes I filled the machine and popped two capsules in with the load. This is quite useful as there is no measuring out of powders and the little capsules dissolve in the water releasing the liquid detergent directly onto the clothes.
I had put the clothes on a short wash as most of the clothes I wear are only used once and in reality only need freshening up they do not really get stained that much so there are not difficult stains to get out although if the clothes are stained badly it is recommended that you pre treat the clothes to help get rid of stubborn stains.
An hour later the wash was done I turned off the machine and got the clothes out. They smelt quite nice but I could not describe what they smelt of but I was happy with the smell. The clothes were nice and clean although as I said there were no stains on them anyway. I put them in the tumble dryer and an hour later they were ready to take out of the machine. I purposefully did not put any conditioner in with the wash or put tumble dryer sheets and once they were dry they still smelt quite pleasant.
What do they contain?
Each capsule contains 32.1g of liquid and consists ofanionic srfacants,soap,non-ionic surfacants, phophonates,perfume,citronellol, butylphenyl methopropional, enzymes, limone, geraniol, linalool, hexyl cinnamal and opital brighteners.
There is a black cross on an orange background on the rear of the packaging warning that it is an irritant and should not be used for hand washing. Some people may develop an allergy to some of the ingredients should this happen then stop using the liquid detergent. Do not cut the capsules or handle them with wet hands. If accidentally splashed into the eyes rinse with copious amounts of water and if necessary seek medical attention.
You should not use them in washer dryers and they are not suitable for silk or wool which I find a little surprising.
Overall I found the detergent quite pleasant smelling. It seemed to clean the clothes ok and my wife was happy with the wash too so much so we got some more.
As this was a trial offer but they are actually available now for £4 in Asda for 25 capsules although this larger pack was more expensive at the time I purchased mine. Quite good value I thought and I would recommend them!
When it comes to washing I do rather a lot it. I'm fanatical about having clean clothes and am often in clothes half a day before changing them cos I'm such a fusspot!
Because I get through many washing products I tend to buy cheap stuff however the Morning Fresh powder that I have been using lately for a pound a box has really started to let me down, leaving greasy stains (I'm a very messy eater lol) and the likes in-bedded into my clothes and the fabrics (even though I use a separate fabric softener) have felt they were a bit rough and just not very pleasant really.
Now I call my mum the washer woman. She has looked after a family all her life (still does) and her washing always comes up impeccable and smells fantastic. She uses Ariel though and nothing else with Comfort Pure Fabric Softener and on the day I bought these capsules I had a limited budget and limited products to choose from!
I bought my plastic container of 10 capsules from my local convenience store and they cost me £2.69 which I didn't think was too bad cos a closer look at the container told me that I only needed one capsule per one load.
Like I have already mentioned the capsules come in a see-through plastic tub which is oblong and quite deep in its shape. The lid on this 'flavour' is bright pink and its a really handy tub that is easy to open and secure up and I'm gonna keep mine as an odds and sods box as the labels will simply pull off!
On the front of the tub we are clearly told what they are and who they are by, and that they are of course Lilly & Ylang Ylang and that of course as I have previously mentioned I got 10 capsules in mine however they are available in different sizes and theres a nice floral picture shown and then on the back label other information given includes being given directions for use, the weight is stated of my 10 capsules which is 373g, the ingredients and warnings are given and contact details for the manufacturer are clearly stated. (Just a quick heads up that I can't find Tropical Flowers & Ylang Ylang as a variety which is what this review heading says and think the 'flavour' name has changed.
What you get are capsules which are a cushion shape and made of see through plastic and its filled with bright pink liquid inside. All you do is pop it into your washing and select your own temperature and add fabric softener to the drawer of the machine.
The small print tells that for very dirty loads or extra large loads of washing to use 2 capsules, me I have a fullish load and I just use the one per wash which is perfectly fine for me.
Not only does these clean my washing to amazing standards even on a 30c wash (I don't have a 15c wash on my machine so haven't tried that out though Surf reckons this is great on a 15c wash!) but it leaves my fabrics feel soft and supple. Since using these I will not be going back to cheap stuff I tell you that much.
The fragrance of this is floral, slightly Oriental and just simply really nice and quite feminine and it lingers on fabrics even when they are stored away for over a week.
I like the fact with these I put the liquid right onto my washing and it really does remove stains. Grease was my bug bear, really greasy marks from things like spag bol, I had blood on one of my white tops too recently where I scratched myself, grotty off white socks that I wear to the gym and I thought it would clean well enough but no where as to how it has performed....I'm really pleased ans they excelled my expectations!
No messing about for me, pop one in and away it goes and I know my washing is clean and even my Mother says I look nice and not like a rag bag and so the results of buying this can even be seen by others!
A great buy and I can't wait to try out other 'flavours' from within this same range and I certainly will be sticking with capsules for ease!
Widely available in stores.

== Surf Tropical Lily and Ylang Ylang Capsules ==
When buying products for washing clothes I have no clear favourite and buy whatever is best value at the time of purchase. I do always buy a brand name as I do believe they are slightly better but I am not loyal to any particular brand. These were bought online from Tesco where a box of 20 are currently £4 , on offer from the usual price of £5.59. They are widely available from most supermarket and come in boxes of 10, 20 or 35 capsules.
== The Capsules ==
The capsules are small pillows filled with liquid measuring 6 cm x 5 cm . They are pink in colour and come in a plastic see through box , so very easy to see when you are running low.
The box has a flip lid with clip closure , which is good enough to keep them tidy but wouldn't stop children or pets getting in .
== In Use ==
The best thing about using capsules is how easy it is , no need to measure or pour , just simply pop a capsule into the machine towards the back and hey presto that's it .
The capsule wrapper completely disappears in the wash, I have never had any evidence left on clothes when using any capsules .
The downside to using capsules is the fact you can't change the amount used without just using another one , so they are not the cheapest to use.
== Cleaning Power ==
I always wash at 40 degrees and have a generous sized washing machine drum but only ever fill to 3/4 full . I find this gives the best results for me no matter what brand I am using and use 1 capsule per wash.
On dirty clothes the cleaning power I can not fault . It has surprised me twice this week alone, getting pasta sauce completely clean and shifting most of the chocolate ice-cream both from my son's white t-shirts. Clothes come out of the washing machine looking and feeling fresh and clean .
So far so good ...
== The Scent ==
Tropical Lily and Ylang Ylang sound lovely and along with the images on the box of exotic flowers give you a sense of tropical beaches and beautiful floral scents .
Surf say the Lily represents a flower of power , A symbol of purity and beauty , with a honeyed, floral fragrance .
Ylang Ylang is a flower of seduction which lifts the spirits with its exotic sweet scents.
== So What Does It Really Smell Of ? ==
Opening the box you get a hint of a scent , it's not particularly floral , more a clean washing powder smell . It isn't very strong but it's not offensive in anyway , and you would be forgiven in thinking that as the liquid is in a plastic capsule, the capsule could hold the scent in as well .
Unfortunately you would be wrong , when washed the clothes don't really smell of anything . There is certainly no exotic floral scent that you are promised and there isn't really a clean washing powder smell either . Once clothes are dry there is no scent at all , whilst they look and feel clean there is no lingering just washed scent . The clothes just smell of nothing .
== Thoughts ==
Great for everyday washing , for everyday stains and general freshening up you can't really complain about its cleaning power . Unfortunately the scent really lets the side down .
I do use a fabric conditioner with nearly all wash loads and found this needed a good glug of a quality fabric conditioner to achieve any scent . I am currently using Lenor Gold Orchid Infusion which leaves a gorgeous scent so am happy to continue to use the capsules for their cleaning power alone , but they wouldn't be my first choice for my next purchase .
I couldn't decide between a 3 or a 4 out of 5 for these as the scent was such a let down , but have gone for a 4 as for cleaning they do stand up well and I wouldn't be put of trying other scents in the hope some actually smell .
4 out of 5 .
When it comes to doing the laundry I don't favour any particular brand I just tend to buy whatever is on offer. Regardless about the type of product powder, liquid, capsules I find that they are all a much of a muchness and I am quite happy to try most products and generally buy whatever is on offer. Currently in my local Wilkinsons they have had quite a few decent offers on named brand laundry products so I have recently been stocking up.
Currently in my cupboard within my vast selection I have a tub of the Surf Essential Oils Tropical Flowers and Ylang Ylang Capsules as they were reduced to £2 for a box of 10 which I thought was quite reasonable and worth a try. Surf products I tend to find are quite good and deliver on their promises so hopefully these capsules would be good.
The capsules are just like any other on the market small little cubes filled with the fragranced washing detergent. In this case the Surf Essential Oils Tropical Flowers and Ylang Ylang Capsules are bright pink in colour which is in keeping with the Surf Tropical Flowers range of products. They come in a clear plastic container featuring a floral image and of course the Surf logo. On the back of the box there is the usage instructions and advice.
Capsules are just an easy way of washing as you simply pop them in with the clothes in the washing machine's drum and that's it! The capsules are made of a dissolvable material which soon dissolves when mixed with water and they then release the washing detergent inside. The Surf capsules do smell quite fragrant with a sweet but floral smell to them which is lovely.
The capsules are incredibly easy to use. As said above you simply just pop one in with your load of washing and that's it you just shut the door and switch it on and let the washing machine do the rest.
Although I use a small amount of fabric conditioner alongside the capsules I can't help but feel a little disappointed after the washing machine cycle has finished. There is hardly a fragrance to the clothes in fact there is none at all and although the clothes are obviously well washed I would have preferred some aroma to them as otherwise there is no point in using a fragranced washing product.
Despite the distinct lack of aroma the clothes do come out well washed and clean (obviously more noticeable on the pale coloured items) so I can't really complain there. When dry they are nice and soft so again another plus but nothing overly special compared to other laundry detergents I have used which have not only manage to get clothes clean and fresh but can also provide a nice fragrance to them after being washed.
These capsules are nothing special. Yes, they manage to clean clothes without much of a problem I do however doubt they would be effective on my yard clothes though as I don't think that these are powerful enough. Overall, I find the fact that they don't leave a fragrance quite disappointing and unfortunately I don't think I'd buy the capsules again and definitely not at full price.
