I like to try a different wash powder or liquid every couple of weeks so if I find one I have not tried before or for a long time on offer I will invariably snap it up. A couple of weeks ago I spotted a box of Surf with Essential Oils (tropical lily & ylang ylang) on offer in my local shop. The 25 wash box set me back £3, which I thought was a good price at around 12p per wash.
The box is mostly pink with picture of fresh looking lilies on the front. The box promises 'freshness that lasts and lasts' and 'outstanding results even in cold water' (15 degrees). The rest of the box contains the usual measurements per wash, contact details, safety instructions and marketing bumf.
The pack is easy to open as it has a rip off tab which hinges the top of the box open for easy scooping of powder and resealing. The powder itself is granular and mostly white with the very occasional pink or blue granule. The powder smells lovely, soapy, clean and fresh and to be honest not very floral at all.
It is very simple to use the powder just take a scoop (130ml ish) and tip it into the appropriate draw of the dispenser (refer to pack for precise measurements). And set the wash going.
When I opened the washer I was greeted with the lovely scent of clean laundry. The clothes all looked clean and smelt fresh, in the last two weeks I have only needed to rewash one item as it was still stained after washing.
I do not have a tumble drier so I have been line drying my laundry; the washing dries up well with the exception of the towels. The towels dry up very crisp and I have found the need to add conditioner with any washes containing towels but as Surf does not claim to contain a conditioning element I can't really complain.
Once the washing is dry it has been relatively easy to iron, when ironing the scent of the wash powder is reinvigorated and released, it smells fresh and clean but I can't detect any floral scents. The laundry continues to smell fresh and clean while hung in the wardrobe till it is ready to be worn again.
Overall I am very happy with my 25 wash box of Surf, would I have been so happy at full price? (£6) I am not as sure as it does seem a tad expensive. With the exception of one t-shirt all the clothes have come through the wash clean and fresh. The only downside is that my towels need a helping hand towards the fluffy softness that I like.
All things considered I award Surf with Essential Oils (tropical lily & ylang ylang) 4 out of 5 stars, only removing one for the expense when not on offer and crisp towels.
Thank you for reading.
When it comes to household products I am never brand loyal, I will always go for whatever is on offer particularly when it comes to washing liquid. On my last shop in my local Tesco they were selling Surf with essential oils half price, I picked up a 1 litre bottle for £2.00.
Washing liquid is getting very glamorous, the manufacturers are coming up with more and more exotic fragrances and attractive packaging and Surf with Essential Oils is no exception. The plastic bottle is a curvy shape and has a blue screw top lid which is covered with a little clear plastic measuring cup that is clipped on to it. The front of the bottle has the Surf logo in blue and informs the customer that it contains essential oils, is a concentrated bio detergent and will give your laundry "freshness that lasts and lasts for 28 washes". It also fives the name of this particular fragrance which is Mystic Freesia and Lotus Flowers, very glam! The rest of the label is decorated with flowers, its actually very pretty.
The back of the label gives all the usual information you would expect to find on a product like this such as instructions for use, warnings and a little bit about the liquid.
The washing liquid is white in colour and quite runny, In the bottle it smells lovely, sweet and flowery, its very subtle and definitely not what I would call overpowering.
Price and Availability
Surf is available in most supermarkets and as I mentioned Tesco are currently selling it at £2.00 which is half price.
I have used my Surf with essential oils daily and so far have been pleased with the results, I very rarely use the full amount of liquid stated as I find I get the same results using just half the recommended amount, the only time I use the full amount suggested if I've got Marks footie kit to wash. I found the liquid cleans my laundry well enough and leaves it fresh, I've done a bit of hand washing with it too and the results were equally as good. Being a bio powder I don't use it on my baby's clothes or bedding but everything else comes up well.
If I could change one thing about it I would like it to smell a little stronger but that's a minor point and it certainly wouldn't put me off buying it n the future.
I would recommend Surf with Essential Oils, it gets my laundry clean and leaves it smelling fresh, it is also available in powder form and liquid tabs. I would certainly consider using this again depending on the price.
Surf biological washing powder.
I recently noticed in Sainsbury's supermarket that they were selling these boxes of different fragranced Surf washing powder, the box contains 2kgs of washing powder and is currently on offer for £3.00.
I choose the Sunshine Orchard fragranced one because the box is a bright yellow colour with little pictures of flowers manderin flowers, in the corners I thought that this looked bright and appealing, so decided instead of buying my usual product I would be happy to give it a try. Also because it was a lot cheaper than my usual brand.
The Box which is made of a thick cardboard, has an easy to open strip, which you just pull and it opens the box all the way around. The first thing i noticed was the lovely smell of the lemons and manderin flowers, it hits you straight away. It states on the box that it does 25 washes ive yet to tell, but i just used my usual cupfull in a whole washing machine full of clothes.
I was most suprised with its performance, because all the stains on my clothing disapeared completely, and the smell was lovely, really fresh and because it contains essential oils i didnt use a seperate fabric conditioner and I must say that my clothes were lovely and soft after drying, i do use a tumble drier, and the smell was still noticiable even after the clothing was dried.
How much to use.
130ml to 80g.
if you have programmes with a pre wash use an extra 100ml.
You can easily use this product for handwashing too, if you wish. Make sure that you rinse your hands and dry them thoroughly.
I did not find that this soap powder affected my skin which can be bording on the sensative side a bit.
Safety note :
Keep away from children.
Keep away from eyes. If product does get into your eyes rinse thoroughly with water.
Rinse and dry hands after use.
Tips for saving on water, energy, co2 and money:

Use the dosing instructions.
Wash at low tempreture.
Save packaging, recycle or refill.
On the bottom of the box is states " that Surf has improved the way it is made, with over 30percent less green house gas emissions per scoop. Thats the equivalent of taking 6000 cars worth of emissions of the road per year. They do have a web site that you may find useful www.cleanerplanetplan.com.
I was most impressed with this product and will be going back tomorrow to stock up om a few more boxes whilst it is on special offer.
Thanks for reading and rating my reviews.
We all like our clothing to smell fresh and clean when we wash them and I like to buy differents washing detergents to have a nice mixture and I sometimes buy the lower brands to wash my none essential smelling items, I came across this one for a bargain price of £2.00 as it was originally reduced to £2.97 from the usual price of around £4.19p but because the box had been opened at some point in the shop they taped it with tape and put a sticker on it for the lower price that I paid. I always am looking for a bargain and this deffinately was one for me.
It comes in a large cardboard box with and a strip that can be pulled around it to open it fully from the top, when I opened it the smell was beautiful and was perfumed and the powder inside was white with little particals of blue which made the fragance even more lovely.
It is supposed to do 26 washes but I have done more than that amount as you do not need that much to make the clothing clean.
Surf are a well known brand so you know that it is always going to be perfect
For lightly soiled clothing it recommends to use 50ml, medium 130ml, heavily, 170ml and 130ml = 80g, but what I normally do is just put about half a cup in every wash no matter how soiled it is and it comes clean, but obviously if something is very soiled then I put a little bit more in the compartment of the washing machine.
This is perfect for handwashing also, so those very delicate items can be either soaked or just put in a bowl or sink for a short while, rinsed and then they are clean.
It can be found in any supermarket but I bought my reduced one from Wilkinsons store.
This one is more concentrated so very little is needed, and also it it reduces the packaging and can be easily recycled, also it is always best to wash with a ful load to save more money, but most of us, especially parents who have children hardly ever have a small one.
For washing at a lower temperature this still works and as low as at 15% it is brilliant, but some machines are easier to set at a different temperature or programme and either way it is good.
I have seen alot of lower priced bargain offers on detergents lately and it is a product you can easily store in a cool place for whenever it is needed and we all need it so it will never be throw away and wasted.
When the clothing is dried it smells gorgeous for a very long time and fresh and when I open my wardrobe I can still smell it and I do not think you can beat nice smelling clothes.
It is gentle to the skin even if you have a delicate skin like mine is, it is still fine in my opinion.
I recommend this for anyone to try if you have not already.
I give it a 5 star rating.
I have to say that a couple of years ago I had a bit of a problem when it came to washing powders, I used to always buy the newest thing (and in most cases the most expensive thing) I could find. No matter how many different products I tried I never seemed fully satisfied with them.
I got really fed up using the liquid tabs and decided, as it was on offer, I would buy Surf with essential oils, tropical flowers and ylang ylang. I thought at the time that it was very good value for money at only £4.00 for a 2.08 kg box and after using it knew I had found a washing powder that would meet all of my needs.
My son suffers from sever eczema and always found it difficult to find a washing powder/gel that wouldn't irritate his skin but at the same time would make the washing smell nice. This product does the job perfectly, its very mild but the clothing stays fresh and its great for stains too. This is surprising as it is a biological washing powder.
I always find that if I wash my towels in with clothes the clothes always smell nice but the towels can smell slightly stale but this products keeps all your washing smelling fresh and can give your worn looking towels a new lease of life.
It is stated on the box that the product has "outstanding results even in cold water (15c)" and I have to say I certainly agree with this statement. This is a great way to be energy efficient and do your bit for the environment as it can save you up to 40% on your energy and decreases your electric bill.
I really like the box that it comes in as its bright and colourful (which I know shouldn't matter but it's a bonus) it tears along the top allowing you to open and close the box without making a mess. The only thing I would say is that it would have been nice if it had come with a container to measure the washing powder out as I have had to use a glass tumbler.
Overall the product provides excellent value for money, does the job perfectly and is always available from the supermarket. I would give this product 9/10, if it came with a tumbler it would have been higher but I cant fault it on anything else. Top product!
Everytime I go to the washing basket all I can think is 'How much washing'. Each time it manages to amaze me as there as only three people in my house. As soon as Scarlet Ela was born I went from doing two loads of washing a week to what felt like two loads of washing a day. When I was pregnant my sister warned me the washing would double but I didn't ever think I would have this much to do.
Unfortuanately when Scarlet baby was born she suffered with terrible Excema and as she has grown older it has not eased for her. Dairylea, Strawberries and being too hot set her off itching bless her. I never thought however that my washing powder would also make it worse for her too. We always avoid the foods that make her bad like the plauge and always ensure she is just the right temprature so when she was still just as itchy it took a while to realise it was the washing powder that made her worse.
Once a week my friend Caroline and I have a weekly shopping trip to Morrisons as I currently am unable to drive. What seemed like months and months of scouring the shelves for washing powder just made me frustrated. As every week I thought my poor baby girl will never be itch
free. It was quite disheartening that we were no closer to finding a powder that would not make her itch. Of course the Doctor was no help and just reffered her onto a sixteen month waiting list to see a dermatologist.
That is when I came across Surf with Essential Oils. I have been aware of this brand since I was a child as my mum used it on and off as I was growing up. But I was unaware they had this new essential oils range. I was a bit wary about using Oils with her delicate skin but I have since been amazed by how it has eased her itching. However, Each box gives you excatly the information that is needed such as how much to use in each area depending on water hardness, the ingredients used, what they are used for and the all important saftey notes. Which was a bit of a mind easer.
The range comes in two different colours of yellow and pink, both containing different oils for differnt uses. The Yellow containing sunshine lemons & Bergamot to infuse your clothes with uplifting fragrances. Bergamont Oil is also used for it's calming affect and refeshing smell.
The pink containing Tropical Flowers & Ylang Ylang to infuse your clothes with relaxing fragrances. Ylang Ylang is used again for a calming affect and to add a bit of 'mmmmm'and 'Aaaahh' to your laundry. Both of the different powders boasted a brilliant clean and brightness.
As the offer in Morrisons was buy two 950g boxes for £3.00 I thought I would try them both out. So into my trolly they went. As always when I got to Laundry day I was worried that my poor baby girl would be full of scratch marks and itchy redness by the next morning.
First I used the Yellow box. Mmmmmm what a lovely smell, as soon as opened the box I loved the lemony freshness that escaped. I followed the instructions and switched the machine on. Once finished I opened the door to a delicious lemon fragrance, which lasted throughout drying. Once the clothes were dry the smell was still amazing and was not too overbearing which was such a blessing as strong perfume items tend to give me a headache. As for the cleanness, the load was a brilliant white.
The ultimate test however was to try Scarlet out with them. I dressed her as usual the next morning and she found her clothes so soft she kept snuggling into her jumper. This can worry me just incase she gets itchy again but I just couldn't believe it when she was not red and sore
by lunchtime. YEAHY!! This one was a keeper.
Now to try out the pink.
I tried the this one on my next load of washing. Again the fragrance was delicious but I found this did not last long once the clothes had been dried. The result in washing though was just as good as the previous one I had tried and my whites were sparkly. However, this particular colour did not seem as fluffy and soft as the yellow so I was so worried when I put Scarlet in her clothes for the day. She didn't seem to snuggle in this jumper as much as the other wither. By lunch time though she wasn't red and itchy so it did exactly what I wanted them too.
I couldn't have asked for anything better. My baby girl was less itchy, we had a delicious smelling washing powder and it didn't matter how much chocolate she got on her clothes because we had a brilliant cleaner aswell. I was so happy and will be sticking to this make religiously
from now on.
As a mum I would certainly recommend Surf with Essentail Oils to anyone and gaurantee them they will never change again.
Now I'm about to start College next month my mum is making me wash my own clothes - Boo!
She says its good practice - I say I don't need it! ;)
To wash my non-black stuff (not a lot of clothes there I might add then), I used this 'Surf with essential oils' which I was told cost £1.88 at the time of purchase.
This biological washing powder is fragranced with 'sunshine lemons and bergamot' and does smell really nice when you first open the box.
The bright yellow box itself is cardboard and has 950g of powder within it, and the write up states you can get ten washes out of the contents so that' pretty cool!
The bergamot is said to be uplifting and apparently is famous for being calming and refreshing, although I've never heard of it before?
The lemon is said to be aromatic which it is. I can definitely smell citrus in the granules.
Promising to infuse your clothes leaving them brilliantly clean with uplifting fragrances also, I became curious to see if it really worked?
There are instructions on the side of the box about how much powder to put in depending on how dirty the clothes are, I used 115 ml for my load which was fine.
The makers Unilever say its fine to wash at 30%, but I put mine in a 405 degree cycle.
I was really pleased with the results as I hung my clean clothes out, everything looked bright and clean and smelt really lovely too! Given the results I think this product deserves 5 stars as it did such a good job of my laundry! I also think it's an economical buy compared to some of the other brands out there and I would use it again - even when I have to pay for it myself, lol! (:
The aroma stayed in the fabrics although it did fade a bit on wearing but you would expect that anyway...
When it comes to washing powder or detergents for my washing machine, the brand that I have been buying of late is usually a supermarket-own brand as they generally offer better value and I find that the end result is about the same. That said, I will from time to time buy tablets or liquid, and am not loyal to any one brand in particular - I am very much influenced by the price of the product when it comes to making my purchase.
I recently opted to buy "Surf with essential oils" biological powder, as it was on offer in my local grocers, and was priced at only £1.50, which was cheaper than any supermarket-own brand I would normally buy.
The other thing that attracted me to this particular powder was the fact that the box stated that it had a "lavender & oriental blossom" scent. I love lavender and enjoy using various products containing it, so it made me rather curious to see if the scent would be distinguishable from the soap powder. I also love using essential oils and am interested in aromatherapy, so the fact that the box said "Surf with Essential Oils" was particularly appealing to me.
The box has very attractive packaging, and the main colour of the box is a pretty lilac colour, although this in itself would not be enough to encourage me to buy a product like this. On the front of the box there is clear wording to indicate exactly what is in the box and you'd be hard pushed to misunderstand that this box did in fact contain biological washing powder, and was scented with lavender and oriental blossom. The box is rather feminine, in that there are several petals and flowers on the front, in various colours of pink, blue and white. This, coupled with the lilac-coloured box would indicate to me that this product is very much aimed at the 'female side' of us 'washing-powder purchasers'!
The box also states that it contains enough powder to allow you to do approximately ten loads of washes. I find that this is on a par with most boxes of washing powder that are this size (which is 950g). In fact, I can confirm that I have an identical sized box of a well-known alternative brand in my kitchen cupboard at the present time, and it too clearly states that it contains enough powder to do ten washes.
The box has a kind of 'flip-up' type of opening, that allows you to rip a section of the corner of the box, under which is a space for the powder to be dispensed into your machine (a glorified hole in the box, really). I found that this was relatively easy to do and the powder flowed fairly well into the washing machine when I was pouring it out. I do not have a measuring cup for this purpose, and none was provided with the box of powder, although this is normal practice I find, for a box of powder that is this size (usually this size is the smallest available).
There is a little paragraph of blurb on the rear of the box which states "Aromatherapy for your clothes. Surf lavender & oriental blossom contains natural essential oils. It infuses your clothes with relaxing fragrances & leaves them brilliantly clean." There is also a fluffy little sentence at the bottom which says "With exotic Jasmine oil - bringing a little bit of calm to your clothes". (This makes me wonder why my clothes need calmed? What has happened to make them so stressed out)? Tut. A marketing ploy, if ever there was one eh? >:-o
I was, I have to admit, particularly impressed with the gorgeous scent that was noticeable on my clothes when I was hanging them out to dry. I was equally happy to note that the smell didn't linger after the clothes were dried and ironed, or when I was wearing the clothes that had been washed using the Surf powder, because I am not too keen on detergents that DO leave their scent. If I want to have a scent on me, then I will spray perfume or something!
As for the claims to infuse my clothes with 'relaxing fragrances', well, I can only say that I have been absolutely stressed out of my head recently with a few different things that have been going on, and no, my soap powder's scent didn't do anything to calm me or relax me at all. That is ok though, because I was rather cynical about these claims, so wasn't expecting them to live up to them. (Just as well, or I'd have been disappointed)!
With reference to the claims on the box of the soap powder about it leaving my clothes "brilliantly clean", I can tell you that this was not the case. I am however, reasonably impressed with the abilities of this particular powder, and would say that it is on a par with a supermarket-own branded powder. No better, though.
I think it is very much the case that with this type of product "you get what you pay for". I am happy to admit that if I paid a bit more and bought "Persil", I would probably be a little happier with the results. As things stand at the moment, I have a huge wedding budget to achieve in the next year or so, and am happy to sacrifice a quid off of the cost of my washing powder, and achieve 'reasonable' rather than 'astounding' results in order that I can tighten the purse strings a little.
I'd probably only buy this powder again, if it was on offer at the same low price as it was when I purchased it. Let's face it, at £1.50 it is an absolute bargain! It did what I expected it to do, no more and no less. I did like the scent, but not so much that I would choose this product over other brands.
I probably would recommend it to you, but again, only if it was on offer. Otherwise, I think you could get the same results from a supermarket-own branded soap powder.
Three stars from me! :-D
