“ Brand: Tesco / Subcategory: Bathroom Care / Type: Bathroom & Toilet Cleaner / Category: Cleaning & Disinfectant „
A review on toilet gel you say? I can sense your excitement building already. Or not, but I figured it would be good to let people know how a store brand product holds up against the leading brands in the toilet cleaning industry.
** The product **
The product is toilet gel to clean your toilet. While only the original is presented on DooYoo there are a few others available to choose from, I personally use the citrus one. It wasn't my choice but I am happy enough with the scent. After all it is literally going down the toilet. The bottle states that it cleans, freshens and kills bacteria. Also specifically states that it is not tested on animals and that Tesco fund research into alternative methods. I like to buy products that aren't tested on animals or the brand as a whole doesn't test on animals so this is a plus point to me and another reason I recommend this product.
It comes in a nice enough bottle but packaging doesn't really do much for me anyway.
** Using the Product **
The toilet gel works like any other, squirt it into your toilet. You can scrub it with a toilet brush to ensure your toilet gets a good clean. Easy to use and no different to use than a more expensive brand. The only thing I do notice is that it is a bit thinner than the more expensive counterparts but I don't feel like it cleans my toilet any less effectively, especially if you are keeping up with your toilet cleaning. As I am sure you are.
** Effectiveness **
My toilet looks and smells clean which is all you can really ask for from a toilet cleaner. The scent doesn't seem different to any other brand (not that I spend much time with my nose down toilets, just to clarify).
In terms of how long a bottle lasts I would say that it is the same as any other bottle. I use about the same amount of cleaner as I would any other brand and the same amount of times per week.
** Price and Availability **
You can buy this from most Tesco stores. I'm not sure about the smaller stores but at least in the bigger stores. It is only £0.80 so it is well priced for what it does and how long it lasts. Does just what a more branded item does.
** Overall **
A good item from Tesco. Perhaps not quite the same quality of product in terms of thickness but it does the job. My toilet looks and smells clean and all for a good price. I would definitely recommend trying it the next time you need a toilet cleaner.
This is not the most exciting product that I have bought lately but it is one that I would recommend for the price so I thought I would write a review.
This is a Tesco own brand toilet gel product which is intended to clean your toilet, remove lime scale and kill bacteria to keep your toilet as fresh as possible. I don't want to spend too much on this sort of boring cleaning essential unless I can help it so I decided to try this as it only cost 89p. I have found it effective and it does it's job. I had some lime scale built up in my toilet and this toilet gel managed to remove almost all of it after one use.
The packaging is pretty standard. It just looks like a cleaning product, inoffensive but uninspiring and just standard. However I don't need it to look fancy so I don't care! It does have a safety mechanism to the lid which those with young children may appreciate, as kids would definitely struggle to open this. For an adult it is fine though, just squeeze the sides as you turn the lid. There is a thinnish nozzle to dispense the gel once you get the lid off.
The gel is on the runnier side so it is easy to squirt out but sometimes loads comes out at once. However you jus have to be a bit careful with it and since it's so cheap I don't begrudge using quite a lot! I just put the nozzle under the toilet rim and squirt it liberally all around there, and a bit all over the insides of the toilet. It is bright blue so easy to see where you have put it.
The smell is fairly neutral I would say. I hate strong bleach smells and luckily this does not have that, though I can smell a bit of bleachiness. It doesn't have any real added pleasant scent to it as far as I can detect, but it smells fine.
You are told to leave it for at least two hours before flushing but generally I leave it over night, as is recommended. When I flush it in the morning the toilet looks clean and the gel does work, even if you have got some lime scale already built up it can remove it effectively.
For the low price I would definitely recommend giving it a try.
The toilet in my home gets cleaned every single night when I retire to bed for the evening. I usually give it a proper scrub once or twice a week just to ensure that no limescale builds up but before I retire to bed I get either bleach or toilet gel and run it around the rim of my toilet seat. I then use Dettol spray and toilet tissue to remove any noticeable marks or dirt before leaving the lid of the toilet seat open for the night (I once had a toilet seat that got stained yellow from coloured toilet cleaner) and then in the morning I can just flush my toilet and it is looking sparkly clean and fresh.
This particular toilet gel is 80p per 750ml bottle at present or 2 bottles for £1.50 and despite this being such a small saving (10p per 2 bottles) I decided to take up this offer as a saving is a saving!
This toilet gel comes in a darkish blue plastic bottle with a child proof cap on it. This is the standard cap where you depress two sections and then twist to remove the cap. This cap works very well and is simple to remove. This bottle has an angled neck on it making it simple to place underneath the toilet bowl rim. This isn't an exaggerated neck but the angle is sufficient that it makes the task easier for me. It takes just a few seconds to twist and squeeze this and run the blue liquid down inside my toilet bowl. I do find that I need to go around twice to ensure an even coverage.
This gel is nice and thick without being too clingy and it runs down the toilet bowl easily. The blue colour of the liquid allows me to see any areas that might have been missed which is very handy. Because this isn't completely thick it only takes a couple of minutes to cover the toilet bowl. This is ideal if I am wanting to give my toilet a deep clean as I can apply this, clean the bathroom sink and then come back to scrub the toilet bowl with a toilet brush. This is ideal if I have guests coming over as I know that in just a few minutes I can have a shiny toilet bowl that looks clean and smells fresh.
The actual fragrance of this isn't really an amazing one. It does smell fresh but it has a disinfectant scent to it that isn't too over powering. Obviously because I leave this overnight it does make my whole bathroom smell of the scent but because it does have a nice fresh scent to it I don't mind that you can detect cleaning products as its not over powering and I feel that it lets people know that my home and more importantly my bathroom is kept clean and looked after on a regular basis.
I have no problems with limescale in my toilet thanks to using this and other similar products regularly and I would definitely recommend this. The scent isn't the best I've ever smelled however it is not artificial or nasty and that along with the cleaning power rates this as 5 out of 5 stars from me!
Toilet cleaner is one of those unexciting yet essential purchases that you want to spend as little as possible on, while ensuring you get a product that works. Most of the time I buy supermarket own brand toilet cleaner, although I will always buy Toilet Duck when it's on offer.
The Tesco Active Toilet Gel comes in a few different fragrances, and this review is for the "Fresh" version. I tend to choose this one rather than the more standard Pine fragrance thinking it will make a change from a pine-scented bathroom...then I use it for the first time and realise I buy this type of fragrance more than pine ones. The fragrance isn't one I can readily describe, but it is recognisable from across the spectrum of cleaning products; it is also known by names such as Marine.
Although the name describes this as a gel, it is a normal liquid toilet cleaners, no thicker than any other brand on the market. It is a bright blue in colour, and is easy to pour from the bottle with only a gentle squeeze needed to get it flowing. The cap needs to be squeezed on both sides to get it open, which I assume is a child-proof device. I find it requires a bit of effort to open when the bottle is new, but it does get easier after the first time.
The toilet cleaner is to be squirted around the toilet bowl, and then ideally left to work for a while before being cleaned off. I usually leave it on the toilet bowl for up to an hour, which is long enough for it to do its work but not long enough for it to dry a bit and so become a bit harder to clean off.
I never let the toilet get to the point of being visibly dirty, so I can't comment on the Tesco Toilet Gel's ability to shift built-up grime, but with regular use it does keep the toilet sparkling white. I can't test whether it removes all nasty bacteria either.
I find cleaning the toilet cleaner from the bowl to be very easy. A scrub with the toilet brush, a flush, and another scrub do the job nicely.
So, although I seem to have an in-built belief that Toilet Duck is the best toilet cleaner, there really doesn't seem to be any reason not to choose cheaper versions. At 80p a bottle, Tesco Active Toilet Gel keeps my toilet very clean.
When it comes to cleaning my toilet I have to admit to being rather a fanatic. It isn't the cleanest of places lets face it due to what its used for! This I bought a while ago whilst doing my usual weekly shop in Tesco and it was on offer at the time for 80p a bottle or any two bottles from the range regardless of the fragrance for a pound which I thought was great value so of course got the two.
To be clear though I am not reviewing the 'Go Fresh' version of this and I was told to pop the review here for the original variety so here I am!
This comes in a dark blue plastic bottle with a red twist and push safety cap to the the top of it and the neck is angled to use under a toilet rim. On the front of the bottle we are told that it is indeed Tesco Active Toilet Gel '100% Limescale Remover, Kills Bacteria, Stain Prevention Technology' then on the back of the bottle other information listed includes being told a bit about the product and directions for use are given, lots of warnings are also given, the size is stated which in this case is 750ml and the only size I have ever seen this to purchase in by the way, ingredients are listed and finally contact details for Tesco are given. Nice enough and informative bottle this.
The Gel Itself:
To use this of course the idea is to use it in a toilet only and the bottle is designed to be easy to direct under a toilet rim and it is able to be used in septic tanks (whatever they are lol).
The gel is very runny in its consistency and dark blue in colour but transparent and it has a sort of bleach aroma to it which is very fresh and clean smelling. I do feel that they have tried to disguise the aroma of this with a sort of sea fresh fragrance but that doesn't work all that well and the main scent of this is bleach however I am happy enough with that considering that the product is used down my toilet after-all.
It is easy to direct under rim with no effort or hardship at all and runs out of the bottle with entire ease. We are told to apply it under the rim and leave it for 30 minutes at least and then to reapply it if need be and leave for a further 15 minutes to ensure that germs are killed and cleaned away.
I do this or sometimes just flush my toilet and give it a wipe and then squirt some of this under the rim and a bit into the toilet bowl overnight and this leaves my toilet sparkling clean and the aroma of the bleach lingers for a good few hours too. I can't vouch for the fact the it kills germs flat dead of course and am no scientist however I am sure that it is does this and it does leave my toilet looking really clean which is the main issue for me.
This did get rid of dark blackish limescale looking stuff and grime from under the toilet rim as well which was there from my flats last tenant and no more has reappeared since using this and all in all I think this is a good value product that I am more than happy to use from now on and the offer that is running at the moment makes this an even better, more economy buy too!
Only available from Tescos.

Over the past few months I have been using bleach in our bathroom toilet but I had started to notice it wasn't really cleaning the toilet very well and lime scale seemed to be building up as was some slight discolouration at the bottom of the bowl.
Whilst I was browsing the cleaning products in our local Tesco, I noticed the Tesco toilet cleaner was on offer for £1. It wasn't a huge saving off of the normal price but I'm a sucker for falling for promotions and it was cheaper than most of the other brands on offer.
I got home and excitedly decided to try out the new cleaner. I just left the cleaner to get on with it and then flushed the toilet a couple of hours later. I was impressed that the toilet looked noticeably cleaner already - and that was without any scrubbing with the toilet brush!
However I did notice that the gel was not particularly thick. It did stick to the side of the toilet but it was difficult to get a nice even coverage to cover the whole bowl. Being a blue gel on a white toilet bowl it is quite easy to notice the places where the gel hasn't covered properly. I had to squirt around the rim twice, which did make me wonder if I had purchased a bargain.
The smell was not too overpowering, it was exactly what I expected of a toilet cleaner and smelt a lot better than when I use bleach. It was quite fresh and had a nice clean smell that stayed in the bathroom - after I had flushed the toilet - for a couple of hours.
I am still pleased with this product, although I think it would be better if the gel was thicker and provided a better coverage of the toilet bowl. I would consider buying this toilet cleaner again, especially if they put it in another offer.
In an effort to reduce the cost of my weekly shopping I decided to change from my usual brand of toilet cleaning and give Tesco own brand a go. I went for Pine - for some reason I always go for Pine cleaning products. The first thing I noticed when I used it was that it wasn't as thick as my normal brand and didn't really stick to the bowl like my usual one did. However I left it for a while and then gave the loo a good scrub and the toilet did seem to be clean, which is what you are after so was fairly happy. However, later on I started to noticed a bit of an odd aroma in the loo and finally worked out it was the toilet - it smelt like a public loo! Not something you would really aim for in your own home. Handily the smell went fairly quickly but it did leave me even less inclined to clean the toilet than normal! Probably wont buy this one again although maybe another 'fragrance' might be better.
Trying to reduce the cost of my grocery shop I had decided to try downbranding my cleaning products, thinking there would be little difference and at least taste would not be an issue. So instead of my usual toilet cleaner I chose the Tesco own brand toilet gel, giving me an instant saving of over 50p.
I am rather lazy with my cleaning and don't use an awful lot of cleaning products, I only clean my toilet a few times a week, or when it needs a scrub. I know I should do it every day and it would probably be easier if I did, but I don't, so the cleaning product I use will have to actually work.
This toilet gel, like most others, comes in a plastic bottle with an angled lid so you can direct the gel around the rim of your toilet. The first thing I noticed about this gel is that it is rather more runny the one I'm used to using, so you need more of it and it tends to just gather in the bowl rather than cling to the sides. This obviously isn't good as it won't be cleaning the sides of the toilet very well.
The second thing I noticed is the smell. Obviously toilet cleaner isn't goind to smell pleasant but this not only knocks you over with a strong odour when you are using it but lingers for hours and manages to penetrate your entire home, making it smell rather like a public lavatory.
When getting to work with the toilet brush as usual there are a lot of bubbles so I can't really see what I'm doing. I ususally just give the toilet a throrough scrubbing and flush to reveal sparkling porcelain. However when using this product and scrubbing as usual, I was not left with a sparkling clean toilet. I had to reapply the product and scrub a lot harder, so it obviously does not dissolve the limescale.
I was very dissapointed with this toilet cleaner and have switched back to the branded one which actually works. I won't recommend this, even to people who clean their toilets every day, because of the awful smell it gives off.
As much as it seems like a rather boring and mundane item to review, things like household cleaners and similar items are probably of as much relevance to consumers as food items and more exciting things like books or films. (I like to think so anyway!)
Anyway, I regularly buy the cheapest toilet cleaner available at whatever supermarket I happen to be doing my shopping in. This is often a value product, such as the "Tesco Value" toilet cleaner.
Whilst I was in my local Tesco store recently however, the 'Value' toilet cleaner was out of stock, so much to my annoyance, I had to pick an alternative (and more expensive) cleaner as I had ran out completely, and it is one of those items that I prefer to have in the house at any time.
The cheapest toilet cleaner that I could find was the "Tesco Active Toilet Gel" own branded toilet cleaner. It was a much cheaper option than rival cleaners such as "Toilet Duck" and the like. I think that the bottle cost me in the region of 60 - 70 pence, which is pretty much the maximum amount that I would spend on such a product.
With the bottle of cleaner now almost empty, I feel that I am in a position to comment on this product fairly and write a review about it.
I will start off by saying that the design of the plastic bottle is much superior to that of its "Value" rival. Whereas a huge flaw the 'Value' product has is the poor design of the bottle, this Tesco toilet cleaner has a perfectly angled 'neck' that allows you to dispense enough liquid (by squeezing the bottle) under the rim of the toilet pan, thus giving you the impression that it is a little cleaner and more hygienic by doing so.
The smell of the gel cleaner is very powerful, and is evident as soon as you have squeezed the liquid from the bottle. I find it to be a very over-powering smell, and almost catches in my throat when I am using it, although to be fair I do find that this is the case with all similar toilet cleaners that I use.
The colour of this particular gel cleaner is a bright blue colour, and I find that if I am not careful to scrub the cleaner away properly, it can stain the sides of the toilet bowl. It has not actually stained it permanently, but I have witnessed a few stubborn blue marks from time to time that are rather annoying. I feel sometimes that I need to clean the loo a few times just to remove every trace of the gel cleaner... this makes this product far from perfect, for me at least.
All in all, I do find that the gel cleaner is effective at removing dirt and cleaning my toilet. I find that after several flushes, there is still a faint whiff of the smell of the product which is a trait that I quite like. I also found that this particular bottle of cleaner lasted slightly longer than its 'Value' rival, but this is probably due to me not using as much of it because of the extremely over-powering smell, rather than the product itself being MUCH more effective.
It probably is a little more effective than the 'Value' cleaner, but not so much so that I will continue to buy this gel cleaner in place of the 'Value' one.
All in all I would award it three stars, and cannot recommend it EXTREMELY highly. It is a good stand-by, but nothing more than that, to my mind at least.
Not the worst, but not the best either! :-/
I am compelled to write a really poor review for this toilet cleaner. I have been using it for just over a week and it is staining my toilet. After I used it the first time, I noticed that when I flushed the toilet, not all of the cleaner went. A blue patch remained on one side of the bowl.
I thought that this might be due to the fact that we have a hippo in our toilet cistern to save water and so sometimes the strength of the flush is not that powerful. So I left it but after a few flushes the stain was still there.
I have used the product repeatedly and each time more blue stains appear. Generally they go after a few flushes but the initial stain remains.
I really like the smell of this cleaner but it does not clean well. Other than leaves blue marks, it does not remove any other stains in the bowl.
This cleaner is fairly cheap. It is 72 pence for 750ml. But there is not much going for it!
Tesco active toilet gel fresh
It seems I am permanently in the aisles where the cleaning products live- summer holidays and lots more cleaning!
I always like to add some toilet cleaner in the toilet because not only does it make the toilet smell fresh and clean but I think it does actually make it cleaner. Having always used some of the more well known brands, i decided to try out tescos own make, mainly because I seem to spend a lot of time in the shop, and it was there!
PRODUCT AND PACKAGING
The toilet cleaner itself comes in a plastic 750ml blue bottle with a kind of curved spout for easy application to under the rim of the toilet. I unscrew the screw on/off cap (with child safety feature) and find that it does smell very fresh and smells of pine, rather like the pine disinfectant. The product itself is blue and quite thick so the bottle needs a bit of a squeeze as it's been used, but this is good because it means that it just doesn't all pour out and be wasted.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
It claims to:
*clean the toilet
*help remove limescale
*leave the toilet smelling clean and fresh
HOW DO I USE IT?
Quite simple...remove cap (obviously!) and direct the liquid around the bowl and under the rim- this is easily achieved because of the curved shape. Leave for at least two hours before flushing so that the product can do its stuff.
Obviously, this should be kept out of the reach of children, and there are the usual warnings for this type of product:
* Don't use with bleach or other cleaning products...I find this quite tricky because i like to use it just after I have cleaned the toilet, but have found that it's ok if I clean the toilet then flush it before using the product.
* Use only in the toilet bowl
* If it comes into contact with skin or eyes, wash immediately
* Wash hands after use
OTHER BITS OF INFORMATION
*the product has not been tested on animals
*it containsdisinfectant and perfume
* tesco will refund money if not satisfied with the product
Safe for use in septic tanks
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Available instore at Tesco or online at www.tesco.com. The product costs 72p for 750ml
The product is easy to use and can be directed wherever needed. Because it's easy to direct I also find that there are no splahes onto me or surrounding surfaces although this could also be due to the fact that it's a thick liquid and so not prone to splashing everywhere.
The toilet cleaner does smell really fresh and clean and fortunately when the toilet is flushed, the liquid flushes away with the water so i am not left with blue streaks down the toilet bowl, and it doesn't require rubbing away.
I'm not really sure about the product as a cleaner because I tend to clean the toilet before using it, and don't think I would like to rely on it as a cleaner although i am sure that it does clean the toilet still further.
For a good toilet cleaner which is reasonably priced, smells fresh and clean and is easy to use, i would recommend this.
Thanks for reading.
Kills bacteria and helps remove lime scale.
