Trying to reduce the cost of my grocery shop I had decided to try downbranding my cleaning products, thinking there would be little difference and at least taste would not be an issue. So instead of my usual toilet cleaner I chose the Tesco own brand toilet gel, giving me an instant saving of over 50p.

I am rather lazy with my cleaning and don't use an awful lot of cleaning products, I only clean my toilet a few times a week, or when it needs a scrub. I know I should do it every day and it would probably be easier if I did, but I don't, so the cleaning product I use will have to actually work.

This toilet gel, like most others, comes in a plastic bottle with an angled lid so you can direct the gel around the rim of your toilet. The first thing I noticed about this gel is that it is rather more runny the one I'm used to using, so you need more of it and it tends to just gather in the bowl rather than cling to the sides. This obviously isn't good as it won't be cleaning the sides of the toilet very well.

The second thing I noticed is the smell. Obviously toilet cleaner isn't goind to smell pleasant but this not only knocks you over with a strong odour when you are using it but lingers for hours and manages to penetrate your entire home, making it smell rather like a public lavatory.

When getting to work with the toilet brush as usual there are a lot of bubbles so I can't really see what I'm doing. I ususally just give the toilet a throrough scrubbing and flush to reveal sparkling porcelain. However when using this product and scrubbing as usual, I was not left with a sparkling clean toilet. I had to reapply the product and scrub a lot harder, so it obviously does not dissolve the limescale.

I was very dissapointed with this toilet cleaner and have switched back to the branded one which actually works. I won't recommend this, even to people who clean their toilets every day, because of the awful smell it gives off.
