Advantages: cheap, cleans effectively, versatile, can be used for all areas

Disadvantages: none other than the strong smell

As Tesco's are fond of saying, every little helps. I tend to agree and am attempting to cut down the cost of my weekly shopping bill by chipping away at the pennies and substituting brand names or my regular purchases for supermarket equivalents or products that are on special offer. The bleach that I have been using recently is Tesco's Thick Bleach, which is part of their standard level cleaning range. It costs 70p for a 750ml bottle, or £1.60 for a 2 litre bottle.

The bleach comes in a bright yellow bottle with an angled neck and a red safety cap. It looks practically idential to the Domestos that I normally use, and I can't tell the difference without looking at the text of the label.

Product description: "Citrus thick bleach. Kills bacteria as well as the leading brand."

I have this bleach in the Citrus variety, and it strongly smells of chemicals with a slight hint of something that could be classed as citrus fruit. It doesn't smell particularly nice but bleach is a harsh product and I always find the smell a bit unpleasant. It has a bright yellow colour which is quite helpful for seeing where you have applied it.

The directions for use on the back of the bottle suggest that this bleach can be used in variety of different ways. You could use it to bleach your white clothes and fabric, sinks, basins, and toilets. I tend to use this for both the kitchen and the bathroom as these are the areas which I feel need the most attention to hygiene. Bleach is a versatile product and this works just as well regardless of whether I'm using it to clean my kitchen sink or the toilet bowl.

The bleach is indeed thick although it does run out of the bottle quite freely when you squeeze it. The neck of the bottle comes in useful for aiming it, which helps when you're applying it round the inner rim of the toilet. It spreads out well but without running away straight off, and it stays in place for a short while which is good if you want to remove stains or dirty marks. I usually clean my sink by rubbing this round the edges and leave it along to work its magic. When I come back the sink is then sparkly white again and it just needs to be cleaned off.

It works equally as well in the bathroom and I use it neat around the toilet, and then diluted to give the bath and sink a good scrub. It cleans away any visible marks but I must say there isn't really any way for me to tell if it truly does kill bacteria as it claims. For cleaning purposes it does perform as well as the more expensive brands and I have beeen impressed enough to continue wanting to use this on a frequent basis.

This is a great all round cleaner at a fantastic price which I could certainly recommend. Another good own brand product from Tesco.

Summary: A great own brand cleaner that cleans effectively and saved me some pennies
