Advantages: Soft toilet tissue at a good price
Disadvantages: None
Bog standard or that little bit of luxury?
Gone are the days of crunchy stiff toilet paper like Izal - thank goodness! Most people like something soft to use on their delicate areas after going to the toilet, but what a choice there is and some are scratchy, some dissolve on contact with moisture so what is the best?
I always used to buy a huge packet of quilted paper from Costco but as we didn't renew our membership I had to buy some from the supermarket so have been trying out different products.
Sometimes the best known brand names are the best but, on other occasions the supermarket brand is just as good and much cheaper and that is why I decided to try Tesco Soft Aloe Vera.
In case you haven't heard of Aloe Vera or don't know much about it then I'll let you into a secret! A lot of people are still undecided about the values as some seem to contradict others but it is believed that aloe vera extracts have antibacterial and antifungal activities and is known as the the medecinal aloe. The cosmetic and alternative medicine industries regularly make claims regarding the soothing, moisturising and healing properties, so we are led to presume that it will be kind to our skin. Tesco tell us that the luxury soft embossed paper has been enriched with a lotion made from aloe vera for a luxurious softness.
Tesco also claims that it has been found to be as soft, strong and long as a leading brand according to consumer tests. My packet had 9 rolls and each roll has an average of 200 sheets per roll, each sheet being 124 x 110 mm. The plastic wrapper is a pretty green colour with writing in a dark grey with a silvery highlight, and a small picture of an aloe plant.
I was interested to see that the front of the packet said that it was "helping you to protect the world's forests" and had a FSC sign. OK, hands up who knows what that means? I didn't but decided to find out! It's amazing that toilet paper can prove to be so interesting! FSC stands for the Forestry Stewardship Council and if you're not sure if your toilet tissue or other paper products you use are forest friendly by using recycled paper or paper certified by the Forest stewardship council then check out http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/forests/tissue-guide? page=5 and be prepared to be surprised! Tesco is one of the good guys!
What does it look like? It has a pretty embossed pattern with small diamonds with dotty edges and most are filled with even smaller dots but others are plain and have a flower embossed. It is a 2 ply tissue and the back sheet is plain. It isn't the whitest toilet paper I've seen but it is OK and not the smoothest to touch when I crush it in my hand (before I used it!) but it is soft and I've used it to blow my nose and my nose hasn't seemed the worse for the experience! It rips off quite well, I hate paper that rips the next piece.
Using it? It does what it is made for and you don't need a strip a mile long!
I'll share with you a conversation heard recently when I visited public toilets at a near by shopping centre. Little girl to Mummy - "Mummy why are you ripping off so much paper?" "It's not as nice as our paper, so I'm using more darling." "Mummy but you know it's one for a wee and two for a poo!" "Rachel will you be QUIET!"
Well maybe Rachel's mummy uses Tesco aloe vera as I would say she's got it just right! So a roll lasts well, and doesn't block the toilet as you need to use loads to perform the necessary.
Lastly the price £4.50 for 9 rolls of £2.08 for a 4 roll pack.
And now a little rhyme to sum up...
Toilet Paper that's kind to trees
And handy when you're about to sneeze.
Necessary when you've been to the loo
Whether it's a wee or even a poo.
Use it for blotting luscious lips
Or even wiping up stray drips.
Covered with Aloe vera to care for your skin,
You can flush it down the loo or drop it in the bin.
Thank you Mr Tesco for taking care of us
A job well done with the minimum of fuss.
Summary: Environmentally friendly toilet tissue

- 13/02/09 Great review Jo - however a word of warning - don't use this (or any other thicker papers) if you have a saniflo - I did and it blocked the whole thing up - cost me a fortune to clear and the plumber told me off!! |
