Advantages: decent price, good quality
Disadvantages: not luxury
Always one to try to shave a few pennies off the weekly shop here and there, I have recently been trying out a few different toilet rolls. Ok, so not the most exciting of trials but in an area of one of life's necessities. I usually use a branded toilet roll (the one with the puppy) but I am frequently both horrified and amazed by how much toilet roll costs. It seems it's not cheap to wipe your behind these days.
I purchased a pack of four rolls of Tesco Own Luxury Soft toilet roll in white. This was priced at £1.95, so just under 50p per roll. It is currently available at a price of £1.75, so even less per roll. The product particulars say that this is 964 sheets. I have not counted, so will simply trust this bit of information!
The rolls are wrapped together in a thin plastic wrapping as shown above and, looking along the shelf, alot of the pack seemed to be damaged in someway - a small dent or rip here and there. This is nothing major and there did not look to be any damage to the toilet rolls themselves but perhaps not what you would expect from a product labelled 'luxury'. On opening the pack, the rolls inside looked a bright white and very 'clean'. I also noticed that the toilet rolls were slightly wider than the rolls I had been using, but still sat on my holder comfortably.
Now, to me, luxury implies that this will be soft. On touching the roll, it did not feel especially soft. The sheets themselves were very thick and not rough, just not what I would call luxury. The perforations between sheets are good, so it is easy to tear off the amount of sheets required without tearing through any sheets. When using this, it does the job nicely. It is also absorbent and I have used this to mop up a few spillages and been pleased with the results. You need only a few sheets to do a good job as it is quite thick. It is soft to use despite my initial impressions and does not cause any irritation. I have also used this when I have had a cold to blow my nose and it has felt soft in this use too, not causing me to suffer from a red nose.
For the price, this is a good buy. It does a good job without looking or feeling too cheap. A roll tends to last a decent amount of time too and, for 50p, I really can't argue. I just think the 'luxury' title is a little misleading!
Summary: does the job!!
