Looking for some pretty birthday cake candles for my daughter's cake last year, Tesco was my first choice. I chose glitter candles for her, as she loves anything glittery, sparkly and bright. I bought a pack of ten candles, which were packaged in a transparent pack so I could see the candles inside without having to rip the pack open. The candles looked pretty before I even took them out of the pack. At the time these cost me 89p which I didn't think was too bad, especially as they also came with their own little candle holders for sticking into the icing on the cake. The candles themselves were all different colours. There were two candles in five different colours, the colours being yellow, blue, green white and red. Each candle wasn't plain in design, as it had an indentation of a swirly pattern all the way down from the top of the candle to its base. Each candles did have a certain amount of glitter on them but I do think that Tesco have been a little mean with their glitter as we really had to struggle a bit to find any. They are not the sparkliest candles in the world, by any means. The candleholders fitted neatly into the cake and prevented the candles from toppling over. The candles lit well first time though the wick was on the tiny side. They also didn't burn down too fast, which was a good thing, as she was having her party in the back garden, which meant that by the time I had lit 8 candles in the kitchen, then carried the cake through the living room, out through the conservatory and out in to the back garden where all her party friends were gathered, they could have burnt down with cheaper candles. However, there was plenty of candle left for Sarah to blow them all out and impress her friends. Overall, they are quite good value for money but I do think they could have been slightly more glittery. I give them three stars.
Little things like having candles to blow out in a cake make things so special. We always make sure we have candles in for when we have birthdays and celebrations in our house so that it makes it special. One year we didn't have any so now we always make sure we have some in. I bought these from Tesco a while ago and thought they looked nice and colourful and I'm glad I did because they are really decent candles and we have had a lot of use out of them. There are 10 in a packet, five different colours and they are typical birthday cake candles with being slightly striped and very thin. The colours are really nice and bright and it's nice to even get a white one in it too! The little flecks of glitter don't show up massively but they do make a little difference. The holders they sit in are thin and narrow but perfect as the candle slots in perfectly and because the holder is only thin it doesn't take up much cake room. Lighting these candles was a little tricky when they were brand new, it would take a few attempts but now that they have been used they light right away. Because these are not lit for long they don't melt away so fast that you can only have one use out of them. Despite us using them several times now for various birthdays that have taken place we still have these in our drawer ready for the next one. Yes they are gradually getting shorter but I think we've used these about 5 times now. These are decent candles, nice, bright and make all the difference on any birthday cake. Highly recommended.
My sister turned nineteen in September and she asked would I make her a birthday cake that had a bit of a rabbit theme. I had a go and whilst I am not the best cake maker in the world I was relatively pleased with it and she really liked it too. As she was having a few friends round for pre drinks before her birthday party I also purchased a couple of packets of the Tesco glitter party candles so that she could have them in her cake because let's face it you are never too old for candles! The Tesco glitter candles are really easy to find in Tesco stores as they are situated on an aisle with all of the other party bits and pieces but you can also buy them online where they cost just 87p for ten. The candles come in a clear fronted plastic section which is mounted on a thin piece of blue card with stars all over it so there is no mistaking the product. Inside the pack you get ten glitter candles of which there are five different colours so you get two pink, blue, green, white and yellow per pack. They come with matching holders too for popping in the cake which is always a bonus as they can catch the wax when they are lit and stop it dripping on the actual cake! The plastic front which holds the candles in place is easily removed and it is only on close inspection that you can really see the glittery parts which are inside a twisting groove which goes all the way around the candle. The glitter isn't really massively noticeable unless you look for it but it does give a slight shimmer. I would say these candles are suitable for both males and females so the glitter certainly doesn't make them look too girly or anything. The candles fit in to their holders well so I wasn't worried about them tipping over when I walked with the cake and the lit candles for my sister to blow out. The candles were easily lit really and once I had lit once using a match I used that candle to light the remaining eighteen candles as I didn't fancy my fingers getting burned lighting that many candles with a match! Whilst the candles burned nicely whilst we were all singing happy birthday to my sister there is still plenty of them left to be able to re use them for someone else's birthday. The bases were easily cleaned in the washing up bowl after we had taken them out and so my mum has kept them in her kitchen drawer in case we need to use them again. I can certainly recommend these candles from Tesco. They are reasonably priced, look nice and burn well whilst required. Thank you for reading my review!
I turned 30 a few weeks ago and my Mam decided that even though I was 30 I must have a birthday cake. She sent my husband for some candles when he was at work but he works in quite a small village with only a Tesco nearby which is also pretty small, apparently the plan was to get a number 3 and a number 0 to put on the cake but they didn't sell the number candles so I ended up with 3 packets of these! The candles come in a packet of ten and my husband says they were about £1 but that shows what his memory is like as I looked them up on the internet and they cost 87p per packet. The candles come on a bright blue cardboard piece with the candles sitting in a plastic box stuck on the front, I didn't open them so cannot comment on how easy they were to open. For your money you get ten candles each one about 3 inches in length with a small white wick on the top, the candles are red, yellow, blue, green and white in colour and you get two of each. Also in the pack you get 10 little plastic candle holders which are fluted around the top and have a spike at the bottom so that you can push them easily into a cake. The candles are not all glittery but have little swirls up and down them and it is the swirls which are actually the glittery bit but to be honest the glitter doesn't show up that much especially when you turn out the lights and just have the flicker of the flame. My daughters birthday was 6 days after mine and since we had plenty of these candles I used a couple of her birthday cake, the candle holders are easy to push into the cake and the spike is long enough that they are held in place well. The candles fit into the holders perfectly and they don't have any movement in them at all. The candles were very easy to light and the previous use of them hadn't caused the wick to shrivel up like some do and they stayed alight until they were blown out which is obviously what you want from a candle. These candles have been used twice now and the wick is still big enough to light again and the candles have barely burnt down at all. These candles are good value but they could have been a bit more glittery.
It was my friends birthday a couple of weeks ago, and mine last Sunday. As our birthdays are close together we tend to celebrate them together, as hers was on a Saturday we decided that would be the best time to go out, we had pre-clubbing drinks at my house. It wouldn't have been a good birthday celebration if we didn't have cake and candles, even though we are both well into our twenties now. I bought some of these Tesco candles to go on our cute Me To You cake. The candles are packaged in a transparent plastic packaging, stuck on a blue piece of cardboard with the Tesco logo and lots of cool pale blue stars dotted around. The transparent packaging means that you can see what candles you are buying. These glitter candles cost me something like 85 pence. There are ten candles and ten candle holders in this pack. There are five different coloured candles and holders, two of each colour, red, white, blue, green and yellow. The description of these candles say that they are glittered, the design on the candles is swirls all the way down the candle, in these swirls are the little particles of glitter. I wouldn't say the glitter is particularly noticeable as the swirls are embedded onto each candle. The holders for each candle have roughly a cm stalk, I think this is the perfect size. It is long enough to stick into the cake and hold each candle up without worrying about it falling over, but not long enough to pierce through a lot of the cake. The candles fit nicely into the holder, meaning they don't move about when transporting the cake with the candles in it. The wick on the candles is quite short, this isn't really a problem timescale wise, but when you are trying to light the first wick it can be a little tricky, especially after a drink! Once the first one is lit, it's easy to use the lit candle to light the rest. The candles were still lit by time we had all sung happy birthday, ready to be blown out. I'd recommend these candles, they look nice, are very colourful, and great if you are after basic candles. The only downsides is the lack of glitter on each candle and the short wicks, but they weren't really much of a problem for us. Originally written by cornishchic April 2012
Recently we were having a surprise party for a family member who turned 60 and even though we knew that they wouldn't want a big fuss, we needed to get a cake, and of course no birthday cake is complete without some candles, no matter what age! My first stop to get candles was the supermarket, for handiness really. Tesco had a few choices of packs of candles, some plain white and some of these colourful glitter candles, and I decided to get both, as I knew with a daughter of our own now we would have plenty of birthdays to celebrate and cakes to decorate with candles, so I thought I might as well just stock up whilst I saw them. This pack of 10 glitter party candles costs just under 90p, which is pretty good value in my opinion. I like the fact that there is a variety of colours as if you are matching cake and candle you will have much more choice with this pack The variety of colours is good ranging from yellow to red to blue with that glittery touch to make it feel like a party! Each candle comes with its own matching candle holder which can be placed into the cake icing to keep it upright as they are lit. These candle holders can also be washed and reused. Well once taken out of the packaging, we used 6 of these candles on the birthday cake. There was no problem at all in lighting them when the time came and since they were blown out in a matter of seconds, rather than relight them, we just took them off, washed the candle holders and kept the candles as well to use again, as there was so little used. Since then, I have used these for my nephews cake but this one was slightly different, and we had to relight these several times to let him blow them out time and time again for enjoyment, and we have still had no bother in lighting these candles. All in all, if you are looking for cheap, reliable party cake candles, with a little bit of sparkle, then this should do your job perfectly!
