Advantages: Softens, reduces static, reduces ironing
Disadvantages: none that I have found
I was round at my sis in laws on Saturday and we chatted while she carried on steaming away with her ironing. I commented on the lovely smell which escaped from the clothes while the ironing was being done and she threw me over a box of Tesco own brand dryer sheets.
"Have you ever tried dryer sheets" she asked, "they make everything much easier to iron, I wouldn't be without them now, sniff them and you'll discover where the smell is coming from".
I explained that I didn't really see the point in dryer sheets when I had already put fabric conditioner in the washing machine, at that point she stuck a towel in my face while commenting "feel how soft that is". When she further added that it was under £1.00 for 40 sheets in Tesco, I decided they would be worth trying.
Off I popped to Tesco and found the box of dryer sheet, when I compared the own brand to Bounce I was shocked to find that they were around a third of the price of the premium brand.
- - How did they look - -
They are similarly packaged to wet wipes or the impregnated clothes you can use to clean windows or polish furniture.
Each sheet was about the size of a standard baby wipe and felt slightly damp to the touch.
- - Did they work - -
They were no bother at all, simply pull one out of the packaging and throw it into the tumble dryer. Make sure to close the packaging on the remainder of the packet to keep the cloths damp.
I emptied the tumble dryer after about 30 minutes use and the lovely summery fresh smell I had noticed at my sis-in-laws hit me immediately. I felt the clothes as they came out and there was definitely an improved softness on them.
The main shock was that the clothes didn't stick together the way they normally do making reaching them out and folding them a much easier job. I presume this is due to the reduction in static claimed on the box.
After tumble drying I find if I shake and fold well there is no need to iron track suit bottoms, fleeces, some sweatshirts etc. this dryer sheet enabled a couple of tops which would normally need a little spruce up with the iron to make it into the looks ok without ironing pile, which is always a help.
- - Recommendation - -
These sheets work out at just over 2p per drying cycle, you get a lovely fragrance to your clothes, they feel softer, the amount of ironing is cut down and the remainder is easier to iron. Throw in the removal of static cling and I have to admit I've been coverted.
Tumble dryer sheets are in fact not the waste of money I had thought they were, and while I'm not going to be buying the Bounce premium brand at over £3.00 I will definitely continue to buy these little beauties at around 94p per box.
- - Problems - -
On the box it warns that if you overload the dryer it can cause greasy spots to appear on the clothes but soaking and rewashing will remove this.
Summary: I'll be buying these again

- 12/12/08 I use the tumble dryer balls for softness and if I want less static and more fragrance I soak an old flannel in fabric softener and add it to the tumble dryer which works perfectly! |
