Advantages: Fab value
Disadvantages: See review
A toilet cistern block is hardly the most exciting item to review, but I use these little circular blocks on a regular basis and feel that they are therefore a staple item in my house. This has led me to believe that they may well be a staple item in other people's houses too, hence this review...
I have bought the Tesco Value branded cistern block for well over two years or so, as I find it is only marginally less efficient than a more popular-branded cistern block, yet it costs almost a quid cheaper.
Toilet cleaning and freshness wouldn't exactly be up there on my top list of priorities, and I am therefore more than happy to sacrifice a little quality to save a few pence in my pocket.
The packaging for the Tesco Value cistern block is on a par with other products from the Tesco Value range - in a word, basic. A plain white background with a little red and blue coloured detail makes it a rather uninspiring looking product. That said, it might well be an uninspiring looking product anyway, regardless of the packaging, as this is after all a toilet cistern block we are talking about!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with how to use a cistern block type of product, it is really very simple. All you need to do is remove a circular block from the packaging and plop it into the cistern for your loo. I will point out at this point in time that you do NOT need to remove the outer packaging that sits on the block - this all dissolves with the block over time.
A little while after plopping the cistern block into my cistern, perhaps twenty minutes or so, I usually return and give the toilet a flush. I feel that this just sort of 'kick starts' the cistern block into working.
Upon doing this, I am instantly aware that the 'water' in my toilet bowl has turned a bright blue colour, thus assuring me that the cistern block is working properly.
The blue colour lasts for a reasonable amount of time, considering the low cost of this twin pack of cistern blocks is around 40 pence! I find that the water in my toilet bowl remains a bright blue colour for perhaps two days, then it starts to fade over the course of the next day or two until it has all been removed completely.
I do not find that this product makes my toilet bowl more 'hygienic', nor does it clean it in any way. To be fair, the packaging on the cistern blocks makes no such claims to do so, and I find that my toilet still needs to be cleaned as much as usual, cistern block in the cistern or not!
What I do find though, is that by using one of these little circular blocks in my toilet cistern, I find that it GIVES THE IMPRESSION of being a bit more hygienic and therefore a bit more pleasant to use! For this reason, I will probably continue to use these little blocks in my loo.
I have not found that these blocks cause there to be any real sort of smell that comes from the toilet after flushing - I do find that there IS more of a smell from more expensive branded blocks, but again, I am happy with the job that this Value product does, considering what I pay for it.
All in all I would recommend these - they give the impression of a nice and hygienic toilet bowl and for what they cost I think they offer brilliant value. These get four stars from me! :-D
Summary: A fab product for a very low price!
