Advantages: Useful for lots of items, food or otherwise. Cheap and plentiful packs.
Disadvantages: Weak plastic can't hold everything! Sealing them can be an issue.
There are certain items within the kitchen which you begin to rely on more and more, until one day, when you run out of that item, hell breaks loose. Food bags are one of those things you can't live without. In my house at least, they are relied upon every morning and evening to package food for lunch-boxes, to keep left-overs fresh, often even to hold non-edible items in security - like odd batteries, screws/bolts, buttons, etc. Anything lacking substantial weight in need of minor protection from outside interference or the possibility of loss is welcome in a Food Bag - be that food or otherwise.
Tesco have created a cheap variety of Food Bag which has decent durability, decent dimensions (255 x 315 mm), and an un-beatable price tag of 50p per 50 sheets (1 pence per single sheet!). You don't want these bags to be too big, because then the material is stretched more as you try to fill them with more food. The size of these value variety is just right because you won't find yourself putting in too much stuff, and you can be sure that what ever you do put in will likely not snap the bag. Placing anything remotely sharp into a bag will stretch it in places and eventually tear it. The end of a banana for instance can tear the plastic. However, if all you are doing is putting the banana in the bag and placing the bag in another bag/box then it should be fine. I wouldn't trust the bags with any loose liquid as a slightly hole would be disastrous, and the tops of the bags don't seal air tight. Anything you do keep inside will remain fresh and clean, prolonging life.
The bags have two methods of closure: Included are wire ties for securing the bags at the top - these are effective, but can lead to tears themselves if they intrude into the plastic at an angle. The other method is to simply tie the end of the bag shut as you would the lases of a shoe, but this can end disastrously if the tie isn't strong enough and the bag opens unintentionally spilling the contents out!
The Food Bags come in basic packaging, and inside you'll find a roll of 50 basic bags. You'll struggle to find anything wrong with them and should just take them as they are, use them until they are gone and then buy more. 50p is a great price and despite the bags weaknesses, if used correctly with the right substances inside, they will last the duration of a working day, keeping food fresh and safe.
Summary: Simple bags for simple items.
