Advantages: Cheap, fiarly good quality,

Disadvantages: Don't overfill your bin or they will rip.

When it comes to creating rubbish, our family, I am slightly ashamed to say seem to create a lot of the stuff. Like most people we try to use the green (and now brown) bins whenever possible but still there seems to be so much that just has to be thrown away. Typical me, always looking for a way to save a few pence thought I would try the Tesco value refuge sacks.

Now I was a bit wary when looking at cheap refuge sacks as most of the time I have been let down by poor quality and at 71 pence for 30 I was wondering if I had made another mistake. At the supermarket the traditional roll between the fingers in some desperate attempt to assess the all round performance just never gives enough away.

However on cracking open the value rapper I was pleasantly surprised to find that on first impressions they looked okay. The bags do seem a little smaller than some, but to be honest this is probably a good thing for us as our kitchen bin must not have a very big capacity. Every time the rubbish reaches the top and I pull it out, the bag just never seems to be very full, so wasted space for the bigger bags.

The golden tests for me are two fold, can I rip a bag off easily on the perforations, and will I be able to get the bag out of the bin without ripping it? On both counts the bags have passed fairly well. I have not been able to fault the tearing process once, unlike one brand which tore everywhere except for the perforations. Under closer examination of that one I discovered that there was no actual bottom to the bags at all! So onto the second and most crucial test; will it rip? Well most of the time it didn't rip, but there were a couple of times when the strain was just too much and a hole would appear from some sharp cornered item resulting in the dreaded bin juice on the floor, aaaaaagh! To be fair on those occasions I had probably overfilled the bin, which I openly accept as one of my failings in my domestic duties. If I see a full bin then why not just give it a gentle prod or two to get a bit more in there.

I think I am being generous with a four star, three and a half would have been more appropiate if it were an option.

So all in all I think I will buy another batch of Tesco Value refuge sacks, and combined with some self control on my part maybe we can get all the rubbish out without tears before bedtime.

Summary: A very cheap refuge sack which performs remarkably well unless overfilled.

I'd always have expected them to be too flimsy to worth bothering with - the Sainsburys Basics ones are truly dreadful.
