Advantages: Insanely cheap, does the job great, long lasting!
Disadvantages: White colour sponge does get dirty quick
Although we own a dishwasher, there are still occasions when the washing up is done using the good old fashioned "by hand" method. Normally because i've forgotten to buy the dish washer tablets, or its broken, seemingly this is always my fault.
Then it becomes a case of arguing avidly, losing the row, and dejectedly filling the sink with hot soapy water and scrubbing away manually till everything is squeaky clean.
This is when the previously long forgotten, thrown to the back of the cupboard in disgust, Tesco Value Sponge Pan Cleaners suddenly become handy. Very handy! So in my experince having a cheap scrubber to hand is almost always a good thing! ( no smutty comments please ).
You have probably noticed that every supermarket seems to throw the word "value" or "basics" around these days. Even Marks an Spencers and Waitrose are trying to convince us that some of their items are good value, maybe depending on how exuberant your usual shopping budget allowance is, maybe they are.
HOWEVER, when you can purchase 5 ( yes 5!!!) sponge scourers for an astonishing 15p* (at time of writing) there is no argument at all. That is absolutely ridicolously good value in anyones book.
When I say 15p, I don't mean each, I mean the whole packet of 5 scourers, thats an astonishing 3p each.
If we compare this to one of the cheapest alternative leading brands, for example Spontex sponges, these come in at 99p for 10. Which if my maths serves me right (Relax, I did get a C at GCSE people), this works out to around 10p each. Which is undeniably great value, but its still a whopping 3.3 times more expensive per unit price, than the Tesco value sponges.
The sponges themselves, measure in at around 10cm by 5cm approx. This makes them slightly smaller than other brands in my opinion, however thats a mute point, as they are still adequate for the job. An if anything are more useful at this smaller size, as they can squeeze into glasses a whole lot easier. An unless you own one of those bottle brushy things on a stick, thats a big advantage.
The sponge material used is white, fairly dense and seemingly good quality. It does what you'd expect a sponge to do. Its pliant, absorbent and doesnt dry rock hard as some other brands do.
To be negative for a moment, perhaps white isn't the best colour for a kitchen sponge though, as it does look grubby very quickly. An if you have wiped a plate that has had tomato sauce on it, it will look a pretty orange for a long while after, but then again how often do you sit there and admire the kitchen sponge?
On the reverse side, (the second layer) is a layer of 5mm thick scourer pad material. This does the job, but admittedly is not as hard wearing as the leading brand scourer. In my opinion I would estimate that each sponge would be capable of performing at least 10-15 sink loads of washing up for a family of four, before needing replacing, and probably many more sink loads if its just two of you.
All in all, a terrific bargain, and purchasing anything else would be a waste of money! An why bother wasting money when you needn't. I feel it is also fair to mention, that Sainsburys and Asda have equivalent products simlarly priced.

Summary: Probably the best cheap scrubber in the world!

- 18/06/09 I personally prefer scrubbers that are a bit more expensive, they last longer and dont wear out as quickly |
