Advantages: Good for wiping painbrushes

Disadvantages: Thin, sharp, rough and generally useful for wiping what they are designed for.

Tesco Value Toilet Rolls turned out to be a very uncomfortable experience for me, in more than one way.

Most of us are cutting back on household shopping bills where we can and trying to survive the present financial climate without picking up too many scars on the way. Speaking of scars bring these toilet rolls to mind.

They look excellent value because you can buy a 12 pack for £1.35 (at today's price that is, at the rate Tesco prices are rising it could be considerably more by next week). If you buy a 36 pack you can further reduce the price to 10p per toilet roll.

I don't mind using a cheaper brand if it will save some money but there comes a point where you can't go cheaper and still get a product that will do the job as well. Unfortunately Tesco Value toilet rolls have reached that point.

First of all the tissue paper is very thin and inclined to split. (We all know what happens then.) The texture of the paper is also very coarse and if you aren't particularly careful when using it you can easily scratch yourself. A scratch in the nether reasons can be quite a painful thing, as I can testify. This problem has become worse as the quality of this product has sunk even further.

The tissue paper is recycled but I don't know what from because it has a rough, almost sharp feel to it and once wet drops to bits completely.

I also use toilet rolls in my office because I suffer from hay fever and tend to sneeze a lot. They are handy to have around and less expensive than a box of tissues. I noticed recently that one good sneeze will blow a hole clean this tissue paper. Using to blow my nose results in a mass of soggy tissue paper unless I use a lot of it to do the job.

My Tesco Value Toilet Rolls have been relegated to my art box where they are excellent for wiping paintbrushes, mopping up ink and lifting excess colour from watercolour paper. This is as close as they get to my nose, or my other end!

Summary: Not worth buying because they don't do the job
