Advantages: Cheap, recycled

Disadvantages: Thinish and small

These toilet rolls are part of the Tesco Value range of items. I recently bought several packs of these (4s not 12s!) from Tesco online, much to the disappointment of my husband who would prefer something more plush.

They are a pack of 4 rolls (or 12) surrounded by a clear and printed plastic pack as above showing what the product looks like, with the information that there are 200 sheets per roll, the roll is 2 ply tissue, sheet size 120mm x 96mm. These rolls also have the support of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and are 100% recycled. I really like this aspect of them as there still aren't that many toilet rolls that are entirely recycled eventhough all you do is flush them away! There is the normal cardboard inner which most people can recycle kerbside, or if not they make great pots for growing peas and beans and can be put straight in the earth after germination as they break down in the soil!

I would say that these rolls are quite small both in height and volume, which suggests that the two ply dimpled sheets are a bit thinner than your typical branded toilet roll. I'd say this is definitely true and often end up pulling quite a few extra sheets off without realising because they are that bit smaller and thinner. The appearance of the paper is a light grey speckledy colour, which is typical of recycled paper. I'd be concerned if it wasn't, or if it was very white because that would mean the paper had been highly bleached which I don't think is any good for me or the environment.

I often find toilet roll useful for cleaning my glasses and this is just as good as any other. However, they are somewhat rough and not very nice for blowing your nose- you've been warned!

Value products are often called false economy, so is this? Well for the price of 40/41p for 4 rolls, eventhough it is thinner and you have to use more than branded rolls, I think it is still worth buying. At the moment, I'm at home all day and my husband works full time and we probably use a roll every three days and probably use a branded roll up every five or six days, so it still represents really good value for money for us. I must say though, I'd probably buy something a bit nicer if we were having lots of visitors!

Final thought- despite being a bit smaller, I find the Sainsburys Basics are a bit thicker and therefore you can use a bit less. That's why these Tesco ones have lost one star for me as they are the same price. So, for the money these are great economy!

Summary: Not false economy but not the best

Great review here. Sadly because of our so-called luxury roll holders we have to use basic ones like these. Doesn't stop me putting other luxury rolls on top if the cistern but they're still good enough even if just for the basic job.

I found it to be thinner, narrower, and have a texture of sandpaper. However I am fussy about bog roll, it has to be ultra soft....
