Tesco Value Toilet Tissue
Advantages: On a par with other cheaper paper.
Disadvantages: Massive hike in price, which doesn't match the quality or other similar supermarket brands
We've been buying Tesco value loo paper for a while, we don't particularly like it but it was cheap and avoided using newspaper for those last few days before pay day. I think the Dooyoo picture is out of date as we've been buying these packs for years and only have a vague recollection of a bigger pack than the four pack from a good few years ago. I may be wrong and they are sold in larger quantities elsewhere but the 3 large Tesco's we shop at only sell the four pack (also only available in a 4 pack online).
The paper has been somewhat revamped sometime in the last few months and is better quality and a bit bigger than the pathetic whisps the rolls once contained. However this has come with a massive price increase which means it no longer fulfils the niche it has in our household. This in turn means that we will no longer be buying it. The price for four rolls containing 400 sheets each has jumped to £1.40 (jumped 20 pence in the last week alone) and this was a huge hike from a previous brilliant 40p. I don't feel that the difference in quality warrants the massive jump, and am increasingly unable to afford even Tescos budget range these days as they seem to be soaring the prices way above the level of inflation, this seems particularly unfair as this targets the poorest sectors of society.
I'm harping on about price here because the only reason for buying Tesco value range is the price and I really don't think this presents good value for money any more, for comparison purposes: Andrex natural 4 roll pack is £1.98 only 58p more, and their Spring force pack of 4 at only £1.50 makes it pointless buying the value version.
However here goes a review of how the tissue performs. One side of the paper still feels just like the old paper, slightly rough with the dimples clear to the touch, the other layer has a softer feeling but this is just an echo of what the higher end tissue feels and performs like, and it doesn't act in the same way as the better brands.
The rolls are not as wide as some so don't 'wipe' as efficiently as they could.
The two ply format 'hangs' together a little better than the original version, but they still tend to separate more easily than is convenient. It's absorbent, but not very thick so what it absorbs unless you use quite a bit of it can touch skin (finger skin), leading to obsessive scrubbing with antibacterial soap. The rolls do last a little longer than their predecessors, a four pack would normally last us only a day and a morning, this version lasts two days or nearly so. This extra longevity does not account for the way more than double increase in price.
I can't think of anything else to say about this tissue I'm afraid. It's not a bad product but its a terrible price for the demographic it is aimed at and quality. I will be buying our end of month tissue at Asda , Sainsburys or the Co-op in future, where they still (for now) have a very budget price on their budget loo paper.
Summary: Don't buy it.
