Tesco Value Toilet Tissue
Disadvantages: Not actually that cheap, terribly rough, not absorbent
I never thought I would write a review on loo roll but here we go ;)
**Price and Availability**
The price seems to vary from North to South and online / offline as far as I can see but at the moment here in Manchester a four roll pack of Tesco Value Toilet Roll costs £1.31. It is also available in a twelve pack.
It is available only instore at Tesco and at Tesco.com (delivery charge applies, minimum spend £25).
Currently in my store it's still packaged and sold as Tesco Value in a clear plastic wrapper with the red and blue Tesco Value logo on it but I've heard they're going to rebrand this 'Everyday Essentials' as they think people are are too embarrassed to buy Tesco Value! Well personally I'm not bothered but looking at Everyday Essentials packaging it is admittedly nicer.
Value it's called, and value it looks. It's no 'puppies on a roll', that's for sure, and whilst you expect no gimmicks in a value range item, it's obviously very basic.
It's a two ply tissue, pretty rough feeling, and ever so thin. I generally like to use loo roll for everything (including it's intended purpose, I mean), like blowing my nose, with cleanser to get my eye makeup off, wiping my toddler's face and so on. I can't use Tesco Value Toilet Tissue for that - she visibly winces, it's so rough!
I wouldn't say it has much absorbency either, the net result being that you end up using more and needing to replace it quicker. It's just a cheap tissue, basically, on a roll. I'm no snob but it's too cheap for me.
**What Price Value Anyway?**
At £1.31 for four rolls, is it that cheap? You can buy a three ply loo roll in Poundland for £1 for four rolls, it's a no-brainer. I think sometimes in supermarkets they make things just that much cheaper than the nearest alternative, stick Value or Basics or whatever on the front and money savers will pick them up thinking it's a great deal without really thinking what else is out there. You can get, for example, a 12 roll pack of 'Nifty' three ply loo roll from Home Bargains for £2.99, and a 9 roll pack for £1.99, also at B&M Bargains and Poundstretcher. Sometimes you need to shop around, but you really don't need to compromise on quality to this level just to save a few pounds.
So, to recap - it's not actually amazing value for money. It's incredibly uncomfortable, and in fact such poor quality that you end up using more of it to compensate. I think this product out of all Value products is one of the worst I've used personally. It's just not worth it.
Even if you are on an incredibly small budget, you're a student, you're camping - it's cheaper to go to Poundland and you'll get a better product - it's not often you can say that, but in this case this is true.
If you are absolutely desperate - absolutely - and this is your only option, then yes, it's preferable to no tissue paper, or using newspaper... just!!
