Advantages: nice smell, lasts longer than claimed, no need to touch cleaner or loo

Disadvantages: looks a little horrid especially after a few days

I had watched the adverts for these little disks a few times and although I was a little interested, I wasn't interested enough to find out more. A few weeks ago I stumbled across a review on dooyoo and as the review was favourable and the price wasn't too bad I decided to give them a go myself.

I have tried various loo cleaner blocks, gels etc. and I don't enjoy getting up close and personal with the blocks, the packaging or with the cistern or loo. I always feel the need to scrub my hands red after positioning one of these.

With this product I liked the idea that you didn't have to touch the loo or the cleaner and also the fact that you didn't need a holder as the advert claims that the housing for the normal toilet blocks are thriving with bacteria. I found it easily in Tesco for just under £2.00. Not too expensive as you get six little blobs of cleaner, each lasting a week.

I was drawn to the lime one as I imagined it to be a fresh clean zesty smell. I was glad to have a choice so far removed from pine, my mum used to plaster pine fresh cleaner constantly around the loo and after a bad sick bug which led to me hanging over the loo most of the day shortly after she had applied the cleaner a whiff of pine makes me feel ill.

- -How does it work - -

It was easily accessible through the packaging and you had to put the two white stick bits of the holder together, I'm not a diyer but even for me this was simple. There are six holes along the holder and it was easy to work out that as you pushed the plunger in, the cleaning solution would be expelled while the plunger would reach the next hole and wouldn't be able to go any further to shove any more out.

Then it was simply a matter of deciding where the cleaner should be placed. I decided about an inch below the rim, stuck the white barrel up against the area pushed in the button and voila a two pound coin sized lump of green goo was stuck fast to the loo. It was then I realized I could probably have placed the green jelly substance a little more discreetly at the front so it wasn't staring up at you the moment you entered the bathroom.

The smell was very fresh and indeed smelt of lime and after a quick practice flush I was pleased to see a little bit of bubbling going on in the bowl. I had enjoyed playing with my new toy so I merrily skipped off to the ensuite to do it all over again. Again very easy no sticking in the barrel no drips, no problem sticking the jelly type cleaner to the loo.

I walked back to the bathroom for another sniff and the smell was quite strong but not sickeningly so. Job done off I went downstairs and forgot all about the new disks. A while later I heard screams and running footsteps and ran up to see what was wrong, my four year old daughter was shaking as the told me that there was something in the toillet Puzzled I went to investigate, the lime aroma hit me as I opened the door and she pointed at the big lump of green nestling under the rim.

I was about to explain it was only a cleaning gel but no. 1 son beat me to it and explained it was a big bogey that had got stuck on the loo from his nose, this seemed to satisfy her and off she went happily back to the loo.

- - Does it perform - -

After a few days the smell was certainly not as strong and the gel was beginning to show signs of slippage, it now resembled the aftermath of someone chewing up 12 green jelly tots and spitting them onto the loo. Not a great look but at least the screaming had stopped and snot was no longer the description of the green goo in the loo.

Its been over a week now and I'm still on my first disk in each loo, Duck claim that this product will last a week and I would say there is probably the best of another week left in it. The smell is now very faint and only noticeable after flushing and it seems to have worked as well as any other toilet cleaner of this type in the cleanliness stakes.

- - Would I buy it again - -

I love the fact that it is lime fragranced, I love the fact that you don't have to touch the cleaning agent or any part of the loo or cistern and I love the fact it lasts longer than the manufacturers claims. I will definitely buy it again as long as its priced similarily to other cleaners, and will stock up if its ever on bogof. I'll just place it a little more discreetly in future.

Summary: Using toilet cleaner the fun way
