Since moving into our flat a couple of years ago now we have had laminate flooring which is very handy especially as I am rather accident prone and Jack being a toddler is just a messy stain waiting to happen. However In the front room we do have a rather large beige and light brown rug along with the bedrooms which are carpeted with a cream coloured flooring thus this does need cleaning from time to time.

I have always used 1001 stain remover and found this to be adequate but the rug in the front room had become so encrusted with play doh and jam that I found this wasn't working as good as it was on the smaller lighter stains. So this said I decided to have a proper look at the different carpet cleaners that were around and came home from Tesco's with this Vanish Carpet Cleaner. It did cost slightly more than the 1001 spray which I usually pay around £3 odd for this one cost around the £5 region but the bottle was a lot bigger.

You get a large spray can containing 600ml and the design of the bottle is the same as most of the Vanish range being a bright pink colour. I think they have of late made improvements to the cleaner and it now boasts having "intelligence foam plus!" what ever that means!

The directions for use are very easy to follow and all you have to do is shake the can, hold it 80cm above area that you are treating, work in with a damp cloth and then leave two hours before hoovering out. This is very simple and is exactly what I did the first time I used it. I had a few small areas of carpet in the bedroom that I wanted to clean up and one wasn't in a very noticeable place so I decided to do that part first hoping that if any untoward reaction happened that it wouldn't be seen. However no reaction happened and it worked a treat and the carpet looked clean as new! In fact it seemed to work so well that it made the area around the part that I had cleaned look like that needed a clean too! So of course I ended up on hands and knees more or less cleaning the whole bedroom!

I left the rug in the front room till last as it was the biggest job and I thought that as I was feeling particularly NOT in a cleaning mood that I would skip the section of instructions where you should work the cleaner into the carpet/rug with a damp cloth. I merely sprayed the entire rug (thickly) with the Vanish Mousse and left it for the two hours. By the time I actually remembered that the carpet mousse was left on it was probably nearing 3 hours so I rushed to hoover the remnants of the mousse away. I wasn't holding out hopes that this would make the rug spotless but I at least hoped that it would take away most of the muck that seemed to be clinging on to it.

As luck would have it, it worked! After hoovering the rug was still slightly damp (and looked it) but after leaving it to dry over night with no one treading on it you could really see the difference and the beige sections of the rug were beige again and not the grubby brown they had been before I had sprayed the mousse on. I was completely pleased with the outcome. The play doh had lifted clean off and left no trace and the rug itself smelled much nice too!

Because I had sprayed so much of the mousse on to the rug (it is a large one) there isn't really that much left of the can but I would think it is enough to tackle any smaller marks and stains that I have to clean off in the near future. I think that £5 seemed steep at the time of buying this can but because of the results it was money well spent.

The Vanish Mousse works well as it says it does, it easy to use and smells nice. I think I will continue to buy Vanish Carpet Cleaner from now on rather than reverting back to the less powerful action of the 1001 cleaner.

I can only award a five star rating to this product as I found nothing wrong or disappointing with it. It most certainly deserves a high recommendation and I have told quite a few people already about how well it worked!
