Advantages: Friendly

Disadvantages: Don't let the waiter catch you screwing with his friend

I must admit to having sucked the occasional fishermans friend, but waiters friends aren't really suitable for sucking, they are more suited to opening wine bottles. Fishermans friends are small and slip into the mouth easily, whereas waiters friends tend to be a bit bigger, more suited to getting a good grip of them with a firmly clenched hand. It just goes to show that one mans friend might well be another mans enemy, or something like that. I'm glad that's sorted and now you aren't confused between fishermans friends and waiters friends, unless you know a waiter who fishes at the weekends, or a fisherman who does the occasional shift in a restaurant - then you could be in trouble.

But lets not confuse the issue, I don't know why you got me started on fishermans friends anyway, they are mints, not wine openers. Forget we mentioned them will ya. We need to concentrate on wine openers, because that's what they are, waiters friends, they are wine openers. Of course you can do other things with them, like opening bottles because they have a little bottle opener attached, but mostly they are used to open wine. Not boxes of wine, bottles, and not bottles of cheap sparkly Italian wine with screw caps, and certainly not those Californian Paul Masson jobs with the peel off lids, just bottles with corks.

So why choose a waiters friend over the vast array of other corkscrewy wine opening implements on the market? Let me reverse the question and ask you why not! Your average run-of-the-mill corkscrew screws out corks, right? But what else does it do? Nothing, that's what, it just screws. Waiters friends are good at screwing, but they also cut and prise, and how many other so-called corkscrews can claim that eh? Yes, I know some can prise, but can they prise AND cut? No. And are they usually big bulky ugly looking things? Yes. Waiters friends are small and compact, look up at the top there, at the top of this page, there's a p
icture of one. If you want to see a better picture just search for "Waiters Friend" on google and I'm sure you'll find one. Don't blame me if the results are a bit iffy with the adult content filter turned off though.

They are really easy to use too, that's why waiters see them as being friends. Basically you pull out the corkscrew part, screw it into the cork (as is it's want), adjust the whole thing to a 45º angle so as the little metal bit sits on top of the bottle rim, and you are ready to prise away. No prizes for successful prising though because it is really easy, just prise and the cork comes away. Oh, and the little knife blade can be used to cut the foil top off real bottles of wine, y'know the ones that don't have a built-in peely strip like German table tat. Cut round the foil, screw in, prise out, scoff the grape juice, sorted.

I've had mine for a good few years now, and it has been a faithful servant, never let me down. I don't really know what the current market value is so I can't help you with prices or ought. Umm, I shouldn't think you would pay any more than three or four quid for one, unless it was a gold plated one, I wouldn't. Oh, and you don't even need to be a waiter to be friends with one. I have become really good mates with mine. I sometimes take it to the pub for a pint, but he doesn't drink much. Ah well, he can suit himself, all the more for me then.

P.S. I know you are eager to get one of these for yourself now you know how cool they are. I'm sorry though, you can't order one right now because the Dooyoo 'Buy Now' button returns an error. Sorry to have teased you so, but I'm sure if you shop around you'll find one somewhere, probably in ASDA, maybe.

Actually, I still didn't understand it, but was too embarrassed to say so at the time. Never mind.
