Don't be scared about trying your arm at painting and hanging wall paper. Rather than immediately calling a professional in, try it yourself.

Neither I nor my partner had ever hung a piece of wall paper before and we tried it on one of our rooms last week.

I scoured the internet for some tips of how to hang wallpaper (there are hundreds of sites) and actually printed off a small instruction manual.

Then we bought good paper to hide all the bumps in the walls, and we made sure we could return any un-open rolls.

We read the instructions on the wall paper about how long the paste needed to soak for, read the internet guide for advice concerning how much paste to use on the paper and on the wall, where in the room to start and how to join up the edges and we were on our way.

Although I would not say that either of us had a natural talent, and will admit to getting two whole sheets wrong before we mastered the art, I think we did really well.

We are tackling the small bedroom next and I am quite looking forward to it. I am sure we will only get better with practice. One word of warning though, it's a bit like learning to drive. If you do it with your partner, you will end up screaming at each other.
