Advantages: Satisfaction guaranteed!

Disadvantages: Can be time consuming and not always enjoyable.

Not a lot of people enjoy decorating, it can be quite a chore, but a newly decorated room can also be very rewarding, even if it’s not perfectly done you will still have the satisfaction of knowing that you did it, although it doesn’t have to be that hard.

Firstly survey your walls, if they are already wallpapered it will obviously need to come down; this itself is a horrible mucky job.

TIP 1

Use a steamer, this is much quicker, easier and less messy. If you don’t own one or know anyone who will lend one out, they are available to rent and they are a lot cheaper than you’d expect.
If none of these are an option, then the old tradition of sponging water onto the paper is also effective with a scraper. To hurry this process along, score the paper with the scraper as it allows the water or steam to penetrate the paper quicker. After the wall is clear you can now decide what you are going to do.

TIP 2

Paint your skirting boards and windowsills first. If you use high gloss paint, once dry it will be easier to clean. Before painting, place masking tape above the skirting board to prevent it going on the wall, as it’s almost impossible to paint over.

TIP 3

When papering choose one wall as your starting point (never start in a corner) and draw a straight line down it from the ceiling to floor, this should ensure those patterns Etc. stay pleasing to the eye, rather than making you feel the room is tilting to one side.
One handy tip is that if you haven’t got a paper hanging brush, I find a clean dry tea towel just as good.

TIP 4

Wherever possible try to do the trimming while the paper is still wet and pliable. Score along the fold, as it’s easier to see and use a pair of sharp decorating scissors.

TIP 5

If you find once dry your paper begins to peel, I find border adhesive or standard PVA glue works best.

Finally, jus
t remember it can be hard work, bit it’s worth it and the easier you make it, the more enjoyable your decorating experience can be.

I wish I had read this last week!! I have just taken the wall paper off my boyfriends room (water and sponge method) and put up new paper. It was hell, though everything else was easy enough!
