No one in our house could relax last week as my daughter was sitting exam number 64 out of 65 on her final journey to become a vet. With this in mind I set about some late spring cleaning - Kim and Aggie would be absolutely thrilled, and it helped pass some time for me, at least giving me sparkling windows from which to view the world! It also stopped me biting all my nails and eating too many biscuits/comfort food, and my husband became a gardener planting, trimming and brushing everything in sight!

I stumbled the other day whilst stocking up for this venture some lilac/pink fluid in a bottle. This immediately transported me back to my childhood when mum would clean the windows on Mondays after she had emptied the twin tub washing machine, so we could see the clothes drying in the wind through the sparkling panes. She always used this lilac/pinky cream we still know today as Windolene. Though many other products exist for the job I decided to purchase this for the first time in over 20 years, and I am now left wondering why I never continued to buy it-it actually does the job better than anything I have tried since. I actually believe I had simply forgotten its existence.

The cost of 500 mls of this emulsion like fluid will cost about £2.45 and it is available in most supermarkets.

The product is a creamy emulsion which in some ways resembles paint and to apply you smear it over the window sparingly, and then buff up with a dry cloth. You need to be careful of your clothing as it does contain white spirit, but it wipes off really easily and it is absolutely brilliant for not leaving smears. I can't actually believe how clean my windows are, the colours through them are much brighter and there is a lovely fresh distinctive Windolene smell which says" I've been cleaning!"

For so many years I had been buying other glass cleaning sprays, which seemed to have over powered the market share dominated by this basic product for so many years. They work well too but this is in a different league.

To use is actually almost a pleasure. I remember when I was small people used this to cover their windows in it when they were decorating or moving in, and a window smeared with Windowlene offered privacy, and when removed would provide a clear and sparkling view of the world beyond.

My indoor cats who enjoy what I call "Bird TV" through my patio doors have never been such avid subscribers, taking every opportunity to watch through this much improved vista!

I think the best attribute for this product has to be the way in which it is completely removed leaving no smears or residue. I don't use it in sunny weather because it makes cleaning windows really difficult, not to mention exhausting, but on a cloudy day when you can really picture the window it makes the job effortless. Being lilac/pink and an emulsion it is so easy to see where it is and to remove every last trace. It is really good for removing the little nose marks made by my dog, and I am sure that if you have little ones those hand marks, which always seemed to be on my windows when my children were tiny, would be removed really thoroughly as well.

It also works really well on any glass surface and mirrors benefit for this immensely.

This old fashioned product is certainly coming back to do my windows from now on, and the only down side in my opinion is the risk it poses to clothing as it can mark things due to the white spirit in contains. Better to clean in old clothes and then it's fine.

On example of a product which although dated is as effective, if not more, than any competitor on the market today.

Summary: A great product, though old fashioned still in my opinion the best!
