Advantages: Works well, cheap, easy to use

Disadvantages: Smells a bit

Over the years I have tried quite a few of the new spray window cleaners and even window wipes but I'm afraid I can't get on with any of them! I always end up with smears all over the windows no matter how hard I try.

So ... I go back to the old fashioned Windolene - you know the thick pink stuff with the strong smell it takes a while to get rid of.

It's actually called Windolene Original Cream and is for 'glass and shiny surfaces'.

It comes in a very plain pink plastic bottle currently costing £2.15 for 500ml in Wilkinson's. It is easy to spot on the shelf of the shop as it is very pink!

When you unscrew the cap of the bottle the first thing you notice is the smell. It is quite a strong chemical smell and it will take a little while to disappear after you have finished cleaning the windows but that's a small price to pay.

The liquid itself is also pink, although not as bright as the bottle, and dries almost on the glass. The colour and the way it dries remind me of that old kaolin and morphine mixture that we used to take to combat sickness and diarrhea when we were children. Come on then who else is old enough to remember that?

The instructions on the back of the bottle tell you to shake the bottle before use and then suggest that you 'Apply sparingly over the surface area. Polish off with a soft, dry cloth before it dries.'

I do mine in a slightly different way - the way my mom taught me all those years ago when I used to help her round the house.

I actually use three different cloths to make a really good job of my windows. I apply the Windolene using the first cloth, being careful not to use too much or it will take ages to get it all off. I use a scruffy cloth for this bit as the Windolene makes a mess of it.

I then rub the majority of it off with the second (duster) cloth and use the third (duster) to buff it up and remove all the remaining smears. Hey presto an excellent shine and a perfectly clean window.

The only word of warning I have is not to try and clean your windows when the sun is shining directly onto them. It really does make it difficult to remove the cleaner as it dries on too quickly and it is also near impossible to see any smears too.

I can hear you all saying 'I'm not doing all that' but actually it is really quick, easy and it leaves the windows shiny and smear free.

Once I have finished I rinse all the cloths straight away and then leave them to soak in some washing powder. They smell a bit with the chemical smell mentioned earlier as they dry but it soon disappears.

Now that we have the log burner my windows do get quite dirty and so I have to clean them more often that I would otherwise have done but Windolene always gets the job done quickly and efficiently and the windows look lovely and bright when I have finished.

I also use Windolene on my mirrors and again they come up like new.

So there you are then, this is one old fashioned product - my mom was using it when I was a little girl and I am 54 now - that is still much better than all the new so called improved alternatives.

Summary: An old fashioned product to beat all the new stuff.

Good review. I have to admit I rarely clean my windows, but know a window cleaner who does them inside and out occasionally in exchange for a cup of coffee :) I'm lazy.
