Advantages: A cleaning cloth that requires no detergents
Disadvantages: None
I was leisurely flipping through a Good housekeeping magazine and the Spontex Window Wonder advertisement just caught my eye. I detest cleaning windows or glass of any kind if it comes to that. I used to use the services of our local window cleaner but I am sad to say that he had to go, six pounds a month for a quick lick over was too heavy a price to pay.
There are so many theories about window cleaning, clean the glass when it is cool ( far easier ), use scrunched up newspaper ( It so called works a treat ), Use a drop of vinegar in the cleaning water ( It makes the glass shine ).
My normal window/glass cleaning equipment tends to be a large piece cut out of an old soft tee shirt and a drop of Fairy Liquid in some warm water.
Let me tell you I have followed all of the handy tips and hints that have ever been issued and still end up with slightly smeary glass.
The Spontex Window Wonder was a new one on me but there it was sitting on the shelf in Tesco with a £2 price tag. I already buy some of the Spontex products - I think that their pan scrubbers are second to none, so I was happy enough to part with my money to become the owner of such a grand ly named product as the Window Wonder.
It seems that this Window Wonder is new and improved and when I opened the hanger type packet I found a good sized ( 12 inches x 12 inches ) pale green cloth.
The instructions are as follow: Use the cloth either slightly damp or dry, if you choose to wet the cloth then just dampen it, the cloth is machine washable ( up to 60c ), do not tumble dry and do not use any bleaching products on the cloth.
Neither must you use any laundry conditioner or softener when you wash the cloth.
The Spontex cloth does feel fairly substantial, that foot square cloth allows you to get to grips with it. One side of the cloth is smooth, this is the polishing side and the other side is embossed and this side is the one that does all of the hard work.
The cloth allows you to clean without using any chemicals or cleaning agents, that is a very positive note.
I wiped my television screen over with the embossed side of the dry cloth and then turned the cloth to the polishing side to finish off, it made a significant difference but I felt that the finish still could have been better.
So I slightly dampened the embossed side of the cloth and went over the screen once again, the result was far better.
Spontex have designed the cloth so that it is a mass of minute fibres and this heightens the cleaning power but lessens the need for any cleaning materials.
The Spontex cloth worked extremely well on the mirrors and the glass in the picture frames, they shone like beacons.
After a good session at the small tasks the cloth was starting to look grubby but I wanted to try at least one pane of glass before I threw it in the washing machine.
Given that the soft cloth moulds well into your hand it is easy to grip and in turn it is easy to move around a larger expanse of glass. The Spontex cloth allows you to access the corners of the window panes well and when you turn the cloth over you can get a decent shine on the glass.
By the time I had finished cleaning the large pane of glass the cloth was filthy and in desperate need of a wash. It washed well, it held its shape well and the embossed side bounced back to life.
I took a closer look at the window pane that I had cleaned earlier and came to the conclusion that there was little difference compared to using my normal cleaning method.
In conclusion I decided that the Spontex Window Wonder was worth buying, it is a good recyclable cleaning cloth that brings a good shine to mirrors, picture frame glass, television screens or PC monitor screens.
If I use my cloth for those tasks alone it will last me for months and the outlay was worth it.
For the windows I am going to revert to my old way, in my opinion that is the better way.
But I am going to get another Window Wonder cloth especially to keep in the car, I think it will be ideal for car window cleaning.
Summary: I am going to use my wonder cloth for those smaller tasks.

- 28/07/09 Great might try one of these, have a glass table that I just can't get nice and clean. Feel like I'm just distributing the smudges across the entire table rather than removing them. |
