Advantages: reusable, economical

Disadvantages: lack of versatility for different sized sandwiches

I first saw the Wrap n Mat Wrap on ebay when I was searching for something recyled or reusable for my husband who abhors wastefulness. As he took a packed lunch to work everyday I thought he might like this instead of using clingfilm for his sandwiches. It is basically a conveniently shaped piece of cloth with a plastic lining which folds up neatly and fastens with velcro. The Wrap n Mat acts as both a sandwich wrap and a placemat. It folds out flat and is easy to wipe clean after use, unlike a bag which is more fiddly and has to be turned inside out.

They are available in lots of different colours and prints. There are now two sizes available. I have found the size to be the only problem, as the original wrap, (33cm by 33cm), will fold around an average sandwich with two slices of bread perfectly, but if you want to take more then your lunch will either get squashed, or you need another wrap or clingfilm/plastic bag. This is why my husband didn't use it every day - because he took different sized bread such as buns, breadsticks etc which didn't fit. However it does get used, and over time it should pay for itself by replacing much of our clingfilm usage. I've seen them on ebay today for £4.50 with free UK postage and there is a website with more info about them at www.wrap-n-mat.com.

They are manufactured in China, apparently fairly traded, use vegetable dyes for the prints and a non toxic food friendly lining called PEVA, (polyethylene vinyl acetate), which is is said to be less environmentally harmful in its production than PVC. The company claim they are eco friendly, although I wonder if that's truly the case if you take into account all the earth costs involved?

I would say this is probably worth buying if you know you will use it every day.

Summary: a good buy if you will use it every day
