Yankee Candle Beach Flowers
Advantages: smells lovely, long lasting, nice intensity
Disadvantages: Doesn't stand out as being amazing in the way some Yankee scents can
My sister bought me the Yankee Candle Beach Flowers wax tart for Christmas, which I was quite pleased about as it was a scent I hadn't yet tried. I used to buy Yankee Candles a lot, but have calmed down recently as I was spending a fortune on them. I think this made it extra nice to receive some as gifts.
Beach flowers is possibly not one I would have purchased myself as I tend to like the fruity and fresh fragrances best and anything with 'flowers' in the title would usually put me off. I did however think that this smelled rather lovely through the wrapper and although I think it's sometimes hard to tell when the tarts are still in their cellophane, I remember thinking that this smelled almost fruity.
For those not familiar with Yankee Candle, you should know that they will make a range of different candles in each scent. With most fragrances that means that you can buy a glass jar candle, glass tumbler, box of tea lights, votive or wax tart. For those wondering what a wax tart is, it's basically a disc of wax with a fluted edge (hence the name tart) that is placed in a burner and melts under the flame of a tea light, filling the room with scent. In that respect it's therefore not really a candle.
The wax tart itself is a sort of dusky pink (almost bordering on lilac) colour and the label depicts star fish and shells alongside tropical looking pink flowers. The official description of this particular fragrance is 'Like delicate keepsakes from the sea. . . the lovely scent of tuberose, lily and hyacinth blossoms balanced with soft watery notes.' Again, I doubt I'd have chosen the candle based on that description, but it does in fact smell rather lovely...
The smell is very floral, I don't think it smells of lilies, but I'm not 100% sure of how tuberose or hyacinth smell, so couldn't tell you if it smells like either of those! I'd say it is quite a feminine fragrance, but as per the description it does have 'watery notes' which are hard to describe but combine with the florals to make the wax smell fresh and clean.
It didn't take long from me placing this in my tart burner for the scent to start filling the room. In fact I could smell the wax tart quite clearly from where I was sitting several feet away, before the whole thing had even melted. Again, at first I felt that the scent of this was slightly fruity rather than floral, which is odd as it certainly doesn't smell like that close up. After a while the scent seems to change and I feel that the floral tones come out more. It's not overly floral and does retain that fresh sea air type fragrance which Yankee call 'watery notes'. On the whole it is a pleasant fragrance. It reminds me of other Yankee scents I have used in the past, although I can't put my finger on which ones. I definitely felt that I recognised the fragrance from somewhere.
I found that the intensity of the wax tart was good and was enough to make the entire living room where I was burning it smell nice. If I left the door open it would fill the hallway with scent too. I also noticed after the tea light had gone out the fragrance lingered in the room for a couple of hours. Despite being strong, I didn't feel this was sickly or overpowering as I have found with a couple of the other Yankee fagrances available.
I buy my Yankee Candles from Clintons Cards or Collectables on the High Street, or online try www.yankee.co.uk. The following prices and burn times are approximate:
Wax Tarts - Burn time 8 hours - £1.25
Votives - Burn time up to 15 hours - £1.80
Tea Lights (pack of 12) - Burn time 4-6 hours each -£6.75
Small Jar - Burn time 25-40 hours - £8.39
Medium Jar - Burn time 65-60 hours - £16.99
Large Jar - Burn time 110-150 hours - £19.99
Small tumbler - Burn time 35-40 hours - £9.95
Medium tumbler (two wick) - Burn time 45-50 hours -£15.49
Overall I was pleased with Beach Flowers and would recommend it. The scent is pleasant and intense and I found that it lasted for the full eight hours specified on the wrapper. If I had to be negative in any way, I would simply say that it is perhaps not the most memorable of the Yankee fragrances available. They have so many amazing fragrances, some of which hugely stand out and this one is not really all that 'special' compared to some of them. That said on the whole I still think it is a lovely fragrance and more than worthy of a four star rating as I would happily use this fragrance again.
Summary: One of the better floral fragrances from Yankee
