Yankee Candle Beach Walk
Advantages: Is subtle, scent has a relaxing quality.
Disadvantages: Smells nothing like a 'Beach Walk'.
I now purchase Yankee candles more than any other scented candle and I like to burn them in my living room, bedroom and bathroom. I find shopping for Yankees quite exciting as they have a really big range of fragrances and many of the scents are unusual and unique. For instance I've tried candles in the past that are supposed to smell of a log cabin in the middle of a pine wood or of a fruit salad! I recently saw this 'Beach Walk' scented candle in the reduced section at my local Yankee stockist (you can get the candles in places like department stores and garden centres as well as online) and thought it sounded quite nice.
Yankee candles come in different sizes and shapes but I almost always get the Sampler size (also called Votives) candles as I have holders to fit these size candles. They are approximately two inches tall and have a slightly heavier top than a base - a bit like an old fashioned English postal box. The candles come individually wrapped and the packet has a picture depicting the fragrance. In this case the photograph on the wrapper reveals a wooden pier or walkway stretching into sun-kissed sand dunes whilst a pair of flip flops have been taken off and abandoned by some carefree walker. This image is beautiful and really gave me high hopes for the candle. To recreate the sensual experience of walking along salty dunes would be fantastic.
All Yankee candles are different colours. The hue of each candle usually has some connection to the fragrance so this one is a pale ocean blue grey shade which makes me think of a calm tide sweeping across bronze shores.
You will need a holder for this candle and you should remember to follow the safety instructions which are printed onto a sticky label on the base of the candle wrapper. A two centimetre distance between each burning candle is important. If you are burning more than one candle you can also mix and match Yankee scents which I've heard is a popular thing to do!
When I picked up this candle in the store I found it difficult to smell through the wrapper. This usually means that the scent is quite mild and this is definitely the case with this one, even when the candle is burning and the wax melted the scent is underwhelming. When I imagine what a seaside smells like I think of saltiness and fresh grassy breezes. The fragrance of the Beach Walk candle fails to recreate these things for me. Infact nothing about the fragrance makes me think of sand, sea, seaweed, dunes, grasses or sunshine. That is not to say that the fragrance is horrible. On the contrary, I think the fragrance of this candle is really lovely - but it is nothing like the scents you might encounter during a 'beach walk'. Instead I'd say that there is a hint of summer wildflower meadow and the warm perfumed skin of a pretty city girl. Yankee actually describe this fragrance as "salt water and sea musk warmed with sunny notes of tangerine and orange blossom". I can definitely detect a musky tone but that's all that registers with this description. The scent is extremely subtle and is not terribly suitable for things like covering up kitchen or pet smells. This is one best placed in the bathroom or bedroom as the fragrance is not so much in-your-face and can have a realxing effect on the psyche.
These Sampler/Votive candles have a lifespan of up to fifteen hours so they usually last me a while and I feel that I get my money's worth. I paid 79p for this one but the usual price was £1.49. Prices vary depending on where you buy these though.
Would I buy this again? Yes, absolutely, but I was dissapointed on my first occasion of buying because I expected something else. Now that I know what the fragrance is like I'm still happy to buy the candle. If this candle was rebranded with another name I'd happily up the star rating but as it is I'll have to reduce it because the fragrance does not live up to it's name 'Beach Walk'.
Summary: Nice, but don't expect it to smell like the seaside!
