Yankee Candle Black Cherry
Advantages: Authentic, Delicious Fragrance, Longevity, Intensity
Disadvantages: A let down in this format
Yankee Candle's Black Cherry fragrance is one of my own personal favourites and even though I experiment and try out a varied selection of products in a bid to get an idea of the scents that are available this is the one along with Sweet Strawberry that I always make a return to. As a fragrance Black Cherry is deep and sweet and for me is one of Yankee's most authentic scents, it's a mouth watering aroma in my opinion and I love how it fills a room with wave after wave of real-life Cherry fragrance. I tend to buy this one as a wax tart as I find they are long lasting and excellent value for money but for an indulgent treat before Christmas last year I decided to splash out and buy my favourite fragrance in a more expensive format; a 2 wick medium lidded tumbler and the focus of this review.
As many regular readers will know by now Yankee Candles produce a wide range of scented candles in different formats, the range of products is huge and for each scent that Yankee produce they offer it in a variety of ways from a cheaply priced wax tart all the way up to large 'Housewarmer' jars. Tumblers are towards the upper end of the price scale and my own 2 wick medium lidded tumbler cost me a little over 14.00 from Yankeedoodle.co.uk. As my picture shows the candle comes housed in a circular glass jar with a metallic lid and has 2 wicks which run through the wax. The wax itself is purple/red in colour and has a mottled appearance, this effect is caused by the essential oils and fragrance that Yankee add to their creations and why the aromas they emit tend to be consistent through the melting process. A medium tumbler weighs 12.5 ounces (354 grams) and has a burn time of around 40-50 hours and whilst their price tag may appear expensive I thought that they would represent good value for money when you consider that as well as burning for a long period of time they also release a significant amount of fragrance that really fills a room with a delicious, authentic aroma. As mentioned I was already familiar with the fragrance of Black Cherry and bought this in tumbler format for the extended burning time and whilst I have no complaints with the actual fragrance itself I do have to mention a flaw with this particular product which is the reason I'm writing this review as I want it to be a warning to other people.
As well as producing authentic, high quality fragrances Yankee are renowned for their 'no waste' products and you generally find that all of the wax in any of the candles is melted and evaporates once burnt. Votives, tea lights and glass jarred candles leave no waxy residue once they have melted away and I expected this to be the case with my tumbler jar. Mine being the medium tumbler in the range comes with 2 wicks which should prevent the wax from 'tunnelling' (this being common with cheaper priced candles that are presented in jars, often the wick tunnels through the centre of the wax leaving a lot of residue on the sides and are generally a waste of money as once the wick reaches the bottom it can't be re-lit) By adding 2 wicks to the wax the problem of tunnelling should be solved as the two flames should be able to produce enough heat to melt all of the wax in the tumbler and allow an even burn throughout the lifespan of the candle. Great in theory but not so great in practice as the wicks in my tumbler have caused a tunnel and have left wax sticking to the sides of the glass and once the wicks reach the bottom of the wax my candle will be useless.
I don't buy many of the higher priced products as I'd rather spend my money on a variety of fragrances but knowing that Black Cherry was one of my own favourites I decided to take the plunge with this one but I have to admit to feeling disappointed with my tumbler. It's fragrance is fantastic, beautifully ripe, sweet Cherries and a real room-filler, it's intensity is strong and whenever I burn this one I can smell it all over my home as it's a fragrance that seems to drift into other rooms and it really appeals to me. However for 14.00 I do feel as if the medium tumbler is waste of money and now that I've nearly come to the end of my Black Cherry I can't say that I would recommend this format to other people as there is just too much wastage. It's overall burning time is probably closer to 40 hours than 50, I've had mine burning on and off for a few weeks now as I find that it's a fragrance that seems to linger so doesn't have to be melted for very long to be able to pick up on its aroma. In this respect I'm impressed and would always recommend the fragrance itself but just not in this format which is why my 3 star rating here is for the tumbler itself and not the scent.
Black Cherry is one to check out for yourself if you like the fruity scents that Yankee produce and it remains a firm favourite of mine but from now on I'll stick to buying it as a wax tart as I like to get real value for my money and sadly I don't think that this one does represent that at all.
Overall, not recommended in this format, thanks for reading my review.
Summary: Still my favourite Yankee fragrance but not in this format
