I am a huge Yankee Candle fan. There is just something about them that makes them stand out from the rest of the market when it comes to candles. Yes they are much more expensive than most items from within this range but for me it is about the aroma they create, the atmosphere they create when lit and how they make me feel. As Autumn has arrived rather nosily and glooming with battering gale force winds and lashings of rain which promise to make anyone feel a tad miserable, the one good thing about coming home from work is being able to close out the outside world with the drawing of the curtains, getting into your Pjs and lightening those candles to relax.
Did you know that Yankee candles have been around since the Christmas of 1969? Well I didn't until a few reviews back when I did a little bit of research, I quite like to read about the companies I am purchasing goods from and some have more interesting stories than others about how they came to be. So for those of you know don't know, this is a very quick synopsis - The story goes that a young American boy named Mike Kittredge a young had no money to buy a gift for his Mother at Christmas, so using his initiative instead he melted some wax crayons to make her a candle. It is then said that a neighbour saw this candle and convinced Mike to sell the candle to her and it is with that money he bought some more wax to make two candles - one for his mother as he had originally planned and the second to sell.
This was the birth of Yankee Candle. Yankee Candle is an American brand which is now sold worldwide in over 400 stores and the Yankee Candle has become the most-recognised name in the candle business and is one of the best selling candle brands with over 150 fragrances, I struggled to name more than 20 different scents but Yankee Candle have an impressive number of fragrances that I do in my lifetime intend to make my way through and as I do that, I have also begun to look at other products from within their range. I was surprised to find things like Pot Pourri, travel sprays, room sprays, reed diffusers, tea-lights and so much more.
One of my favourite fragrances in candle form is the 'Clean Cotton' version, I love the smell it produces and I find it really relaxing and I tend to have a few of those candles dotted about the house. Then I noticed that there was a Pot Pourri version of 'Clean Cotton' and whilst I don't have a lot of Pot Pourri around, I do tend to keep some in a glass vase, designed for Pot Pourri in the bathroom, more as a decorative item, but if I can get one which smells really nice too them I am really happy about it. This product is sold in a see through plastic bag with a blue ribbon tied around the top and then towards the bottom of the packaging is a label telling you what this product is. Inside the bag you have 450g worth of Pot Pourri, which is a really nice big bag but it does cost around £8.99 which is the cheapest price I have seen it sold for online. It is also sold in plastic boxes on some websites as well and in the boxes you only get 250g worth of Pot Pourri and the price is similar to the bag.
Pot Pourri to me was something my Nanna used to have on her living room coffee table and it reeked, it was so strong and vile that within a matters of minutes I was gagging to get out of the room and get some air. For years I couldn't stand the stuff, though she told me she used to to rid the house of old people smells and moths... frankly I would have taken the old person smell anyday. More recently, Pot Pourri is now sold with nicer fragrances, ones that don't make you gag and need to leave a room and thankfully Yankee Candle have managed to help me banish those memories and smells and give me nice fragrances to use.
The reason I like this fragrance is because to me it smells clean and it reminds me of freshly washed and dried laundry with a similar fragrance to the Lenor I use. It isn't a sickly smell and it is one which lingers whenever I have used a candle and I am hoping this Pot Pourri gives the exact same aroma and that it lingers just as much. The selling blurb is as follows:
"This luxurious Yankee Candle Clean Cotton Potpourri Bag will have your home feeling like the great outdoors. Taking the realistic fragrance of sun dried cotton and merging that with green notes, white flowers, and just a hint of lemon this scent is sure to have your home feeling refreshed" and it is this description which sold it to me.
So once the bag is open, immediately the trusted aroma that I am so familiar with comes to life and as soon as it is placed in the vase and put into the bathroom, in a matter of minutes the aroma is filling the room. To look at the Pot Pourri is much more than a few flakes of dried flowers. What you get are white flowers, little white round balls shaped items and other which stand out and look quite decorative in the vase I store them in and because it is made with refresh oils, the scent tends to last much longer, in my case it was a good 3 months before I felt the scent had faded almost entirely and I needed to refresh it. So once you find it is beginning to disappear, you can purchase a new bag or, I admit to cheating slightly, I used some of the oil in my reed diffuser to drop onto the Pot Pourri, shook it around and it is smelling as good as new.
For me, items such as this are a good alternative to having fresh flowers about the house and a much cheaper option. The smell definitely lingers and whilst it is fresh within whichever storage facility you are using the Pot Pourri in, it is wonderful but like most thing the scent will begin to fade and need replacing or replenishing after a few months and you just need to be a bit more inventive about how you do that to get the most out of your product. My Pot Pourri has been in my bathroom now for 7 months and it still smells wonderful because in all that time I have added some extra oil from my reed diffuser just the once when I felt the scent had faded and I could no longer detect it in the room as I opened the door. This is a product I definitely love and will continue to have around my home, along with candles; it does come in other fragrances too.
