Advantages: Smells like washing powder, strong and reliable.
Disadvantages: Not to all tastes, some formats not worth the money.
Out of all the classic and long lasting scents that Yankee Candle have ever made, if there was ever a candle that set the world alight for British buyers from an introductory point of view, then it has to be the "washing powder," scented fragrance known as "Clean Cotton." From the day it came onto the market, as an early buyer of the products from Yankee Candle, it always seemed that "Clean Cotton" outsold almost all the other scents including the water flower like "Wedding Day," and the spicy cinnamon ranges. Other companies like Candle-Lite, Colonial and even the White company have tried similar approaches - but like Coca Cola - it is hard to mess with the original no matter how many copies of the original idea are made!
Clean Cotton is therefore a favourite of most Yankee Candle fans and it is easy to see why, since it sits outside a lot of other the other fragrances Yankee Candle offer. It has also being longer on the market to earn its "classic" status against all the other scents that Yankee Candle have a tendency to stop and then re-release either the next year later or stop production completely. Along the way though, Yankee Candle have tapped into the "washing powder" scented market with later likewise fabric conditioner fragrances that act as good accompaniments such as "Ocean Wave," (pastel blue in colour) and "Sunwashed Linen," (light yellow) two fragrances that are sadly no longer in production but worthwhile checking out on EBay if you like the idea of fabric conditioner constantly keeping things fresh in the home. All is not lost though, as "Clean Cotton" is always available in several different formats, but as usual some are stronger than others. New for 2010 for example, YC have also released a neutraliser spray in the form of the name "Good Air," and is a combination of neutraliser scents with fabric conditioner. It is only available for the moment as a pressurized spray or plug in scent.
In terms of the Clean Cotton scent either in wax tart form (you'll need an potpourri oil burner and tea light candle/or electric to use this format) or any size of the small, medium or large house warmer "storage" jar types, you'll usually get a strong air and bold strength of washing powder scents - but if the wax tart is fairly old, then the scent doesn't last as long. In both cases though, Clean Cotton isn't just a vibrant fresh scent of washing powder, similar to the biological powders you can get these days that haven't been tampered with an additional scents to make their own scent last longer in just washed clothing. Always positive, strong and wavering there is nothing quite like the smell of just washed clothing, either hanging on a line or just taken out of a washing machine after the final rinse, or even from your choice of drying as the smell travels and pervades the home. The first tone that comes off the candle is that of washing powder, the middle tone has a fragrant reminder of white lillies whilst the base tone of lemons makes the fragrance long lasting and refreshing. Without the white flowers, the fragrance wouldn't be as fresh whilst the added citrus makes the scent balanced without coming across as too soapy.
As a result Clean Cotton is never a light fragrance in the purest form of burning wax and due to its white colour, always pours out a crisp and clean looking light at the same time, matching decors and colours in the home. Talking of colour, Clean Cotton is also appropriate to colour rooms lightly with a very fresh and potent array of flavours that can take up to half an hour or an hour to fully come alive whilst the scent lingers well after the candle has been extinguished. Leave the tart or jar burning for a couple of hours and you'll be greeted with a huge explosion of warm and relaxing fresh scent that masks smells fairly well too such as tobacco or pets. It is a scent that never induces coughing or sneezing when burnt, even for long periods whilst for a lot of the time despite the strong fragrant promise of soapy scents, this is a candle out of a very few Yankee Candle scents I've left out to burn when guests or friends drop around. It seems to be a very well received scent generally even though it isn't for fans that may prefer sweet or spicy scented candles.
There are however a couple of downsides and it all comes to the different versions of this scented fragrance. Although the scent is largely fairly strong and pervades well into several rooms in a home, in wax tart form the fragrance lasts quite a long time whilst the medium and large jars can last up to 3 or more months depending on use. Although the prices for Yankee Candle are expensive, you are buying a product that has been fairly grounded and produced to the highest premium quality - just as other Yankee Candle products. However! I've found a few disappointments along the way such as the sampler/votive types that have very little scent, reed diffusers, which don't smell of much, whilst the plug in type lacks the lemon that makes the fragrance, linger.
Out of the many formats that exist, one of the rarer formats is a bottle of essential burning oil that was supposed to be added to the pot pourri that Yankee Candle used to sell. Priced on average at £5-99, the small bottle acts as a booster when added to a pot pourri burner with a little added water. I never found the same kind of strength when added to bog standard pot pourri or dried leaves though, which is probably one reason alone to why Yankee Candle stopped making it! Another rarer find is that of the scented powder sachets (useless if you have a Dyson vacuum or a vacuum cleaner with a charcoal or HEPA filter added) which is very fragrant and strong lasting up to a month when either used in hanging spaces, drawers, cars, closed spaces or even a vacuum cleaner's dust bag which scents a room with the strong powder scent. I've tried alternatives like adding REAL washing powder to my vacuums with dust bags, but it isn't the same and the scent doesn't last particularly long!

All in all I can't fault Clean Cotton by Yankee Candle. It is a classic scent for a reason and a wonderful scent to consider if all you need is a freshness that is lacking in your home. It is a must for washing powder fans or those who love the smell of washing on a constant cycle without the machine's accompanied noise! It may not be one of my particular favourites, but it is fragrance I've come to respect and trust in whenever I need a clean wave of freshness. Thanks for reading. İNar2 2010
