Yankee Candle Coastal Waters Wax Tart
Advantages: Lovely fresh and natural scent, reasonably strong, a nice change from my more fruity tarts
Disadvantages: It's not a fragrance I am always in the mood for
I received this Coastal Waters wax tart from a reviewing friend, a fellow Yankee Candle fan who has sent me tarts in the past and has got it soooo right every time. Coastal Waters isn't the sort of fragrance I'd buy for myself, I tend to go for the sweeter or fruitier fragrances but the scent through the wrapper intrigued me so I popped it in the tart burner pretty much straightaway.
Coastal Waters is a blue tart; I always take note of the pretty labels on the tarts before unwrapping and this one features a stark cliff scene, it matches so beautifully with the colour of the wax and immediately makes me think this is going to be a seaside-y outdoors kind of fragrance. Through the wrapper it doesn't really have a particularly 'different' fragrance and smells like any other tart of this type, I can detect a mildly floral fragrance but other than that found it pretty much impossible to distinguish other notes before lighting the burner.
It doesn't take long for the fragrance to come through once I've lit the tealight beneath the burner, within around fifteen minutes I can smell it in the room and fifteen minutes after that it's travelled throughout the whole downstairs of the house. It's pretty pungent if you're sitting near the burner but although our house is open plan Coastal Waters doesn't drift upstairs at all, which is quite surprising as it smells so strongly downstairs.
The fragrance is really awkward to describe as it doesn't actually smell of anything in particular, I can't put a name of any of the notes within the perfume which lingers so wonderfully in the air. It's a clean smell, not overly crisp due to the addition of a light floral undertone - I suspect this is lilac but can't be certain as its blended to within an inch of its life (in the nicest possible way!). Coastal Waters reminds me of washing powder in a way; it has a soapy fragrance which I really like, I don't think it specifically smells of the sea despite the proclamations of Yankee Candle but it's certainly freshening and makes the house smell welcoming and freshly cleaned.
The fragrance is reasonably strong, perfect in my opinion for the type of perfume produced. It has the capability of lingering for a good few hours after the tealight goes out, which surprised me as Coastal Waters is subtle in its own way and I thought it would quickly fade away - not so. This morning I burned the tart and went shopping after the tealight had gone out, I didn't get home until two hours had passed and as I walked in the door a wave of this wonderfully clean, soapy fragrance hit me. Still it wasn't apparent upstairs however, it's like there's invisible partition just above the second stair that is impenetrable to Coastal Waters!
The estimated burn time is eight hours and I think that's about right, it fragrances nicely through three tealights and doesn't really weaken off too much as I get to the end of the usefulness of the tart. I currently have it burning in the dining room, or rather I did last night, and love the fact that I get a fairly strong waft of the clean fragrance as I walk past the unlit burner - it's nicely positioned near the doorway that leads into the living room so I pass it often over the course of the day, it's like a little personal burst of air freshener as I stroll past. Gorgeously uplifting.
I've bought Coastal Waters since in the same tart format. It's one of those fragrances that is nice when you're in a certain sort of mood, although more often I'll choose something else to burn simply because I favour other types of fragrance with more identifiable notes. The freshness of this one appeals to me though and I find it the perfect tart to burn on the rare occasions that I find time to deep clean the house, the fragrance really accentuating the spotlessly clean atmosphere in whichever room I've decided to tackle. I've never been tempted by the jars of Coastal Waters, feeling that I wouldn't like to be tied down to it for 40 - 150 hours (depending on jar size) - in this instance the wax tart is perfect for me and the tiny price of £1.30 makes it practically unnoticeable in my household budget.
