Yankee Candle Home Remedies Anti-Tobacco Candle
Advantages: It does work (kind of), Trusted Brand Name
As a general rule we don't allow smoking in our home even though I am a smoker myself, however as we are currently in the middle of redecorating our spare bedroom/computer room I have decided that so long as the door is shut and the windows are open then it is allowed whilst the room is unfinished. My non smoking wife hates the smell of cigarettes and my smoking habit has been a much discussed topic over the years and to be fair I do try to be considerate by smoking outside, never in the car and rarely when we are out together. When I began smoking indoors even I admit that the smell was noticeable and despite my best efforts at keeping any lingering cigarette odour in just the one room it was inevitable that the smell would manage to make its way out and into other areas of our home much to my wife's disgust. Proprietary air fresheners only do so much in masking the smell and whilst our favourite Yankee Candles are fragrant and aromatic even they could not fully disguise the smell of cigarette smoke, therefore in a last ditch attempt to find something that would work I scoured the internet for a solution.
The Yankee Candle Home Remedies Anti-Tobacco odour neutralising candle appealed to me for a couple of reasons. One the brand is one I trust and the other was the claims that the formulation in these range of products "contain a unique odour eliminating technology which neutralises tobacco and smoke odours in the air leaving your home smelling clean and fresh". Impressive claims I'm sure you will agree and despite costing a pretty hefty £5.99 for a 104 gram tin (please note the picture above is for the glass jar option although the product is the same whichever you choose) I went ahead and ordered one.
My tin is a squat and circular, silver coloured with a green band around its trunk, the Yankee Candle name is clearly printed and there are a couple of black and white pictures illustrating that the product is an "Anti Tobacco odour neutralising candle". Removing the lid of the tin and there is a faint mint aroma emanating from the green coloured wax and in the centre sits a wick ready to be lit. The base of the tin states that you can expect to receive 25 hours worth of burning time from the candle and lists various safety instructions in picture format which are just common sense really.
So does it work?
Lighting the wick and allowing the wax to slowly melt the first thing you notice is, well, nothing really. There are no strong odours released into the air instead there is a vague minty aroma which seems to gently fill the room. I stand my tinned candle directly next to my ashtray in an attempt to neutralise as much cigarette smoke as I can and whilst this doesn't mask the smell of the smoke it does appear to have a neutralising effect. With the windows open and the door shut there is a marked improvement in the freshness of the other rooms adjoining our spare room and it's only when you open the door and walk into the room I smoke in that you can detect a slight underlying smell of any extinguished cigarettes. I do empty my ashtray on a regular basis anyway in a bid to avoid the butts adding to any unpleasant aromas and whilst I wouldn't say that the candle *completely* eliminates every trace of cigarette smoke I can't deny that its claims are genuine.
My wife has a keener sense of smell than me anyway being a non smoker and even she admitted that the candle performed a lot better than she anticipated and whilst she is still not impressed that I am smoking inside she is happier that our home is not being taken over by cigarette smoke. Whilst this has been great purchase for me personally I would imagine that if there are a few smokers in a home and they expect just one of these candles to completely neutralise everyone's cigarette smoke then they may be in for a disappointment as I doubt it could perform miracles. For me, a single smoker in a single room which is well ventilated the Anti Tobacco odour neutralising candle from Yankee Candles does almost do what it says on the tin and only leaves a slight residue of cigarette smoke aroma which is detectable to those with a keen sense of smell.
Don't expect miracles would be my advice. This isn't a product which will allow you to puff happily away day in, day out and still have a fresh smelling home, however used with consideration for your own living environment and taking care to minimise the chances of cigarette smoke invading other rooms in your home you may find this an effective purchase.
For its price tag it is expensive and I wouldn't begin to justify its cost, however you can be assured that you get plenty of use out of one single tin and unlike cheaper candles available there is absolutely no wastage whatsoever with this. The candle burns from the centre outwards and once used up leaves no trace of wax around the sides or at the bottom of the tin, it is self contained so there is no need to stand on a candle plate or in a holder and once used up can be disposed of quite easily. You do get around 25 hours of life out of the candle itself and I burned my first one over a period of 5 days lighting it on an evening for around 5 hours each time. It is unlike the other products in the standard Yankee Candle range as they are renowned for their authentic fragrances so even though the tin states that this is mint don't expect a sharp toothpaste-like scent coming from the lit candle. It is very subtle and would be no good as a room scenter but for eliminating tobacco odours I found it to be effective.
It can be purchased online and off from specialist candle stockists and should cost in the region of £5.99 for a tin. It wouldn't be something I buy on a regular basis as I will not be smoking inside for much longer but I am already onto my second tin and have found its repeat purchase just as good as the first. It isn't quite a 5 star purchase in my opinion as its effects would be limited to how many smokers are in a home, I was impressed with the results though and despite its high price tag I would still award a 4 star rating along with a recommendation to try it if it sounds like something that would be of benefit to you and your home.
