Yankee Candle Island Spa
Advantages: strong, refreshing fragrance, good continued burn time, cute little holder
Disadvantages: scent can be a bit *too* strong
I love candles and have tons of holders scattered around my house so I can create the perfect romantic or haunting lighting effects. I particularly like fragranced candles as they create a lovely atmosphere, especially during the evenings when you want to feel all cosy. The Yankee Candle brand has a big fan following here on Dooyoo, and I am a relatively new recruit to the Yankee Candle fan club. I purchased a set of candles in all sorts of different fragrances to get a good overview of the brand, and the one I've tried most recently is the Island Spa candle.
Product description: "Experience the authentic, true-to-life fragrance, with pure natural plant extracts, and renowned Yankee Candle quality that have made us the worlds favourite. A revitalizing escape the sunny citrus aroma of crisp, juicy mandarins and vibrant lemon verbena."
I purchased my Yankee Candles from yankeedoodle.co.uk, and the individual candles can also be found at many different high street retailers. Each fragrance is available in a variety of different forms: wax tart, sampler votive, tea lights, small jar, medium jar and large jar. I have this in the small "housewarmer" jar size, which costs around £7.99. The label design for Island Spa is an attractive landscape picture of a tropical beach complete with blue water, white sands, and palm trees. The candle itself is made of a sludgy greyish blue coloured wax, which doesn't particularly nice in my opinion, and also doesn't match in with any of my home decor. The housewarmer jar is a cute little design, with a clear cylindrical base and domed lid section that has a rubber seal that fits back into place securely when the candle is not in use.
Upon lighting the candle it took a short while for the wax to start melting and release the fragrance into the room. The candle gives off a good level of fragrance and I find that I can usually sense the fragrance round the whole room after only about 30 minutes of the candle being lit. I personally prefer sweet fragrances so this is a bit of a departure from my usual tastes. The Island Spa fragrance primarily has strong and sharp citrus tones to it, with some deeper notes of green, woody tones underneath. It is a very bright, fresh fragrance that woks effectively to scent my home and works well even against pet odours! For those out there who know their Yankee Candle fragrances, I would say that this smells a lot like the "Dune Grass" variety, with a citrus twist that makes it lighter. The only downside for me is that the candle seems to kick out an overpowering level of fragrance when left burning for a while, and this strong level of fragrance can be a bit unpleasant, especially if it's been used in a room where I will later be preparing or eating food. I usually get around this by moving the candle around several different rooms and allowing the scent to diffuse around a larger space, as well as giving me the benefit of smelling the fresh Island Spa scent throughout my house at a tolerable level.
My housewarmer jar is the smallest size, which weighs in at 7 oz. They claim to give around 25-40 hours of burning time. This is quite a large (15 hour!) variable and I think it's a bit annoying of the manufacturers to put such a vague reference on the info label. When using this candle I like to keep it burning for several hours at a time so that the wax melts evenly and I'm not left with wasted leftover bits that get stuck against the edges of the glass holder and won't melt down. Looking back on how often I've used it I would say that I definitely got nearer to the full 40 hours of use from this candle, which I think is excellent considering the size and price. The scent remained just as strong right to the very end and did not become any weaker even after repeated uses.
This candle gives off a lovely refreshing fragrance which really helps to brighten the mood in my home. It is perfect for times such as now when I'm cocooned inside my house with the central heating on and windows firmly shut which is nice for keeping warm but leaves my rooms a feeling stuffy and smelling a bit musty. I would recommend it for anyone who wants a lovely cleansing and refreshing scented candle with a strong, natural citrus scent.
Summary: A refreshing scented candle
