      Very helpful

      Overpriced and disappointing

After a recent incident where I was freaked out by a gigantic bee getting into my kitchen, (seriously it was huge, I didn't know obesity affected insects) I have been reluctant (OK, terrified) to have my windows open. Luckily they have vents that not even a regular sized bee could get through, but living in a smallish flat where scent seems to travel, I have been using a lot of air fresheners and scented candles lately to keep it smelling nice.

I got this plug-in air freshener in a mega pack of Yankee Candle products I ordered online. I wouldn't have chosen it myself, because I don't use plug-in air fresheners all that often, and when I do I tend to use Ambi-Pur 3volution which I am more than happy with. Also, the price of this, in my opinion, is ridiculous at £8.49 which is more than double what I would normally pay. Granted, I accept the fact that I will be happy to part with over the odds for a Yankee Candle, but the candles are something I tend to burn once or twice a week as a kind of treat, whereas I'd say these are more an everyday product.

The plug in unit comes in a reddish brown box with a clear window and the box is pretty huge compared to the product inside. My mother and her friends tend to give each other these sort of plug-in air freshener things as gifts. I personally find that weird, but perhaps it becomes more acceptable to imply someone's house stinks when you reach middle age! If you did want to give it as a gift the packaging does look reasonably nice close up and I suppose it looks more presentable than a can of Oust.

The box contains the plug in unit, a bottle of the mandarin cranberry fragrance and an instruction leaflet. I think the actual unit is kind of cute in a way, it's the sort of thing I can see some people will hate and find far too fussy, but I think it looks sweet. If you're familiar with Yankee Candles you will know that if you buy a jar candle you can also buy a sort of lampshade to place on top, turning your candle into a kind of lamp! Well, the air freshener is made so that the bottle looks like the jar candle and the plug in unit has a shade on it complete with swirly flower design. It's a bit different to how most plug-in air fresheners look and like I say, it won't be to everyone's taste, but personally I like it.

The fragrance, I must admit, is not what I expected. I also have a couple of other Mandarin Cranberry products from the Yankee Candle range including a sample size candle. The plug-in air freshener smells similar to the candle but definitely not the same. To me it smells like a watered down fruit juice. I think perhaps the cranberry is more dominant, but it's still quite a weak scent. For me personally I think it smells too weak and too watery a fragrance and in short, I don't like it. It's certainly not the worst scent ever, and I've continued to use it, but it's not great either and if you've bought the candle and liked it, I wouldn't recommend trying this simply on the basis of liking the scent of the candle because the two are quite different.

On the plug in unit is a small lever which can be slid across to adjust the fragrance intensity from one to three. I have tried it on all three settings, but have found with settings one and two I can't smell it at all. It always has to be set to three which creates enough fragrance to go round the room. I don't find that it masks smells, but in fairness it doesn't claim to, but it will subtly fragrance a room and make it smell fresher.

Normally I would expect to pay between £3 and £5 for a plug in air freshener unit and maybe £2 to £4 for refills. This one however, as already mentioned, costs an extortionate £8.49 for the unit but the refills are £5.99 for a pack of two which is a little more reasonable. Still, these are not prices I would pay. Usually with Yankee Candle products I am prepared to pay extra for better quality, but this plug-in did not provide the quality I expected.

Whilst the unit looked quite nice and decorative, the fragrance was a huge let down. The mandarin cranberry scent was weak and for the price I would have expected much more. I'll continue to use this up, and I will be happy to try the other fragrance plug-in I also received, to see if it's any better, but I wouldn't buy the mandarin cranberry scent again and nor would I recommend it.
