Disadvantages: Not to all tastes.

If you're into Aromatherapy or even if you have been lucky enough to have a rather expensive massage, then you'll recognize Jasmine as being a staple offering in the essential oils family that is designed to revive, freshen and make you come alive. The thing is though, I've never really had a massage with oil of Jasmine and the only aspect that Jasmine comes to mind is the tea that I drink!

By now you'll realize by reading a lot of my reviews that I'm into quite a lot of scented candles and not a lot of them are by means, flowery by nature. Most of the time I'm happy with spicy candles, cinnamon based or even the washing powder types that give off a fresh and welcoming approach, reminding many of just washed clothing or a spin in a tumble dryer without steaming up the home. Midnight Jasmine is a candle that I first tried by Yankee Candle several years ago, one of the many first introductory candles that the company first sold in the flower ranges and out of the many that the American premium candle company now sell, Midnight Jasmine is one of the weakest in terms of flower explosions.

Like a lot of Yankee Candle products, Midnight Jasmine has a white colour and is available in so many scented wax formats, the easiest and cheapest ways of sampling this product is literally by the actual sampler/votive candle, wax tart or car tab air freshener. All of those products should cost below £2 on average but some last longer than others on duration and strength. If you are feeling rather extravagant however, splash out on small, medium or large house warmer jar glass candles. The white candle looks quite classy when lit and as usual with all of the Yankee Candle products in glass format, the label is peelable and has the usual Yankee Candle in gold lettering with a picture of Jasmine flowers on a purple background. I tend to buy Yankee Candle in either sampler form, wax tart form or the medium jars as the medium jars can last up to between three to five months if used for an hour every three days per week! Let me tell you now if you don't know already, Yankee Candle products are far better than Glade, Partylite candles and a lot of other companies because of the quality and richness of many of the fragrances that they have spent hours dreaming up. Yankee Candle also take on suggestions of fragrances if you can't find one out of their many different scents available and the beauty of the wax tarts is that you can make up your own fragrance by cutting one in half with another likewise tart of another scent - and Midnight Jasmine is an ideal candle to do this with.

The secret behind Midnight Jasmine is that it's not just a candle that yells and pervades home strongly with the scent of Jasmine oil. There's a deeply exotic roundness that comes off this candle with a hint of burnt orange Mandarin and Neroli as the base tone, Jasmine as the middle scent whilst my favourite of all, warm and sweet honeysuckle on the top, a scent that Yankee Candle also sell on its own that makes my tongue tingle and often makes me hungry! Once these additives come together, Midnight Jasmine doesn't explode into firework like waves of synthetic, artificial scent, but rather gradually builds up a tone of relaxing hues, natural additives that are easy to warm to and easy to cosy up beside.

Midnight Jasmine however is a candle that was introduced to quite a few of my friends in a slightly unusual fashion. When I was studying at university, one of our lecturers had a Zen room with Asian instruments and as he had studied instruments and history in a few countries, made all of us sit cross legged on the floor before we tried several different instruments. This is when I suggested bringing Midnight Jasmine in as our lecturer had mentioned that to become truly "at one" with the spirit, we had to imagine sweet Jasmine incense being burnt. Thanks to smoke detectors, the question of incense sticks was out of the question but when I bought an electric potpourri burner in with some of the Midnight Jasmine candles in tart wax form (turned into a hot oil with little steam rising from it) the candle's fragrance began to relax everyone and as the smell of Jasmine filled the room, we could at last behold the kind of "at one" character our lecturer originally wanted to obtain! As such this is a well rounded fragrant candle that has a mix of honey with light and refreshing Jasmine flowers. It never becomes too heady which is a good aspect as some Yankee Candles can induce headaches if the scent is too pungent and despite the flowery and citrus content, Midnight Jasmine is amazing at not being able to make people sneeze! It can mask various pongs fairly well including wet dog smells and the odd cigarette, but this fragrance is really suited for those buyers who are looking to relax, or awaken without being too alert.

Whilst the dishwasher safe house warmer style country jars are worth considering, they are not shatterproof at the top or heat insulated at the sides. The bases are however heat insulated and have a good durability to them unless you purposefully drop the candle on a hard floor! Generally, if you buy the house warmer style jars, they have air tight thick glass lids that make excellent storage jars after the wax has been washed out - and don't worry if you don't have a dishwasher, as after all the wax has burnt down to the base, a little hot water swirled around lifts any excess wax out and sends it floating to the top. The same applies to the wax sampler votive candles and they will need a suitable votive holder that can accept these kinds of candles. With the wax tart format, you'll need a hot oil potpourri burner powered by a tealight candle and a deep concave base at the top to accept the hard oil wax tart. Once the tart is done, it is simple to take out by putting the entire burner (albeit tealight candle) into a freezer for a minimum of 15 minutes. It has to be completely cooled down first to avoid the burner from cracking and when taken out, turn over and the wax tart should easily fall out. If the base of the tart still has scent, you can keep the candle and use it another time and use another wax tart of another scent if it has been purchased.

Unlike a lot of Yankee Candle scents, the formats given above largely work well in Midnight Jasmine's favour including the tealight candles, a format that I have never really been taken with where Yankee Candle are concerned. The reed diffuser is a lovely gift for example and works well giving out a light and refreshing fragrance against the hard to find plug in formula which can be too heavy at times when left on for a couple of hours. For a better spread, the wax tarts or glass jar types are far better and more reliable for an even spread of scent. As one of many Yankee Candle scents available, Midnight Jasmine is a perfect balance of citrus and light flowery scent - try it and be overwhelmed by the quality and richness of the candle's natural scents on offer. Unlike a lot of Glade flowery candles there is very little synthetic after tones and Yankee Candle's offering here is longer lasting and good value for money. Thanks for reading. İNar2 2010
